Maybe I missed something, or didn't catch something there, but how could there be 74 tests for us next year?? We only have 23 Exams in the Fall. Doesn't seem too likely we'll get an additional 51 in the Spring. Just a guess though.

My wife and I just bought our first house!!! I was in des moines for about four and a half hours toured a ****-load of homes and found one I really liked and now all that has to happen is the inspection!!! We'll be moving out the 6th of July. So we'll be around from then on. I can't wait to meet y'all. Thanks for the realtor recommendations. 🙂

Awesome! Congrats on the house!

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. I went to a conference in Orlando this past week. It's really pretty in Florida but I can't help but thinking "Wow, this is all going to be run over by a huge hurricane"

Newho, thanks for all the info on the rotations and Dr. Boz. Are there any updates about that? I wonder who they are looking at to hire to head the OMM department. I guess we'll see in August. Cross your fingers!

I was thinking, 74.....is that right? So I looked back over last year on my laptop and we had 55 exams, 14 quizzes, 3 assignments, 1 lab, and 1 BLS test that makes 74 items that are worth points towards your gpa. If you include the Ethics course it's 75 but we didn't have to take a test for that. 08's did though.

That sounds fair enough. Definitely different if it was 74 EXAMS, however. Now that would just be hellacious, and I was pretty sure that I wasn't going to CCOM next year.

No crap. $9,000/year???????????????? This is killing me.
I might be on the schools plan and I might just have my wife and kids get their coverage from the government. How else can it be done? This all sucks. 🙁

hello friends

I have a family and for the first semester i payed that ridiculous 9,000 for the year from the schools plan.
HOWEVER
after the 1st semester I said screw it and got MEDICAID for all of us (along with food stamps to boot -an extra 400 dollars/month for food)

Best decision I ever made. copays are 1 dollar for meds and all visits (routine or regular) are FREE. You can also choose whatever provider you want (that accepts medicaid - and luckily 95 percent of desmoines area doctors do)
We happen to goto the ritzy rich SUV-driving soccer mom west des moines clinic, free.. heh.

I also got the rest of of 9000 back equivocated to the day I stopped my school plan.

If any of you other family doc insurance induced chronic headache sufferers need help with this, I'll be happy to explain how to get this aid.

Also, we tried to get section 9 (Free housing/rent) but after KATRINA all the funds were completely soaked up for the next 5 years by refugees/victims/immigrants.

Hey even,
Thanks for the great post. 👍
Let me explain my situation. I am married and have one child with one on the way (November). I am currently employed at a hospital with great benefits. But it all comes crashing down when I enroll at DMU this fall. What can I do? You explained about Medicare etc. How do you go about applying for it? What are the income requirements? Because right now I make ok money, and if they ask for a check stub, they may tell me I make too much. But I won't be making anything when I start this fall. How do I apply? What are the regulations? With all the money I'm going to pay in taxes, I have no problems taking a little help during my medical school adventure. Anyway, ANY info would be much appreciated. One less stress I'll have when we move this fall. Thanks again. 😀

(btw, I was going to pm you but I couldn't...i don't know why 👍 )

You will not be making any money, so you will be eligible for medicaid for you and your entire family. The school will pressure you to get your insurance information/wavier in asap, but they are pretty lenient on timing. They will just have you send an email saying that you have medicaid to student services director.

Anyway to sign up. Goto
Polk County :Iowa Dept of Human Services Information (Polk County Government) 1900 Carpenter St
Des Moines, IA 50314 - 1309
(515) 286-3550

Its in a old barn looking military barracks type of building on the east side. Its right behind st. john's basilica. Just go up to the counter and say I need to sign up for medicaid and benefits. They will give you a form to fill out. Fill it out and hand it in, then they will have you see your case worker that day or have you come back another day. As far as filling the form out, state your income and earnings as nothing, but state that you may have some money from loans. The general cut off for medicaid is 18,000, and since students generally get only at most 10k for the year to spend on youll be fine.

For food stamps, I could not get food stamps for me b/c I'm a full-time student, but my wife and baby get them and its about 300/month, and I can use the card to buy them food so it works out.

Just letting you know though, its very very ghetto at that place and you may feel like you are going to get shot or mugged, but its worth it in the end.

Is there any chance at medicaid if I am married with no kids?

as long as you guys make nothing together you can get it, nothing being under 18k/year excluding loans

Does anyone know the link to the background check place??
I guess I forgot to sign a form.

Yep, we fly in Friday night and we will be there until late Tuesday afternoon. You guys?
We get there Sunday and leave Wed. morning.
Still going to have dinner?
Anyone else going to be there during these times and want to join us?

Dinner sounds good to me. Just give us a call.

If you are looking for me at orientation, I will be sporting my new DMU T-Shirt. I'm pretty sure that it is one of a kind....unless there are some black -market knock offs.

TD

PS, I think capes will be making a big come back on 06 (See Nu Pic <---)...You heard it here 1st.

One of a kind?!? No fair. Did you make it yourself from a white t-shirt and magic marker?

Atleast I know I'm the only one with a gray one.

Ahhh, I just checked my mail box.

Bumper stickers and T-shirts! Wow, that $1,000 deposit doesn't seem so bad now.

1 Official DMU t-shirt and a bumper sticker for a measly 1 Grand....damn, DMU really knows how to stretch the money.

Nah, I'm just playing. I thought it was a pretty nice gesture. I doubt every school does the things that DMU has done for us to make us feel that much more welcome. Definitely one of the main reasons I decided to go here.

It was a good day today. I got a "free" t-shirt and new grill which ordered about a week ago.

Yea no doubt. Not only gray, it's only a large.
I wear at least a XXL. I'm so sexy....

Just as I thought, Those black-market knock offs are already on the streets..... Next thing we will see students on campus wearing Sikes, F-Oakleys, DKNJ Jeans, drinking Mt. Do (or Star Box) and eating a Nickers Candy Bar (or N&N's).

Don't forget my favorite, Tommy Hilfinger.

Yeha! Looks like another in our class, an incoming pod student, and myself will be living in 3000 Grand. *celebrating* I'll have a place to live!

Hey, so now I'm just referred to as the incoming pod student....I'm hurt, ok not really.

I wonder how they selected the shirt size....b/c I didn't get a large. I got a "M"...perhaps it is based on our gender...the males get L and the females all got M....how fun. And the neon green lettering is HOT! I wonder if these shirts are the rejects that the students didn't buy at the book store....hehe

But, I wore mine today....🙂

well now that I started I might as well keep posting on the DO boards haha. So yea, I guess maybe it's me or the podiatry students in general but it's safe to say (at least I hope so) that I'll never wear the shirt they gave me as it was an XL and looked about like an XXL, I just gave it to the brother-in-law, he should be able to fill it out...

The ones at the bookstore are actually legible! Too bad ours don't glow in the dark though. I'm not sure about sizing. I received a small, so I'm guessing they just approximate your size from the interview/your pic, etc.

haha you guys

this board will go dead come about the 2nd bio chem test 😀

Quite possibly true, but we'll also be in the same town and campus then too. Currently, we're scattered where ever your imagination goes.

Oh man, I think it is my first time posting on the DMU thread...I was accepted a while back, but I just wanted to say I am really pumped to start this August and meet everything...WOOH!

I kinda wish I had gotten a small....I put mine in the dryer to help it along....

I don't mean to make all you XXLs out there feel bad, but I am just not a very large gal.....

PS: where does shttthttle or whatever come from (the name I mean?)

I thought I was the only lucky one with the illegible neon green shirt. Oh well. It will be worn with pride. It'll be a conversation piece. Everyone will have to ask what the shirt says. It's a brilliant ploy by the school to promote osteopathic medicine. The AOA had something to do with this I'm sure.

Pod students suck, unless of course they can bring some other hot Pod students (only girls, sorry, Steve) back to apt. 210.

Hmm....I'll have to see what I can do haha, so much for being anonymous, besides we already talked about this it's not about the pod students remember...

P.S. anyone sick of working?

I am! I've been in the real world for about a year and a half now and I've decided that it sucks so I'm going back to school. Can't wait to quit my job and start studying 40 hours a week. (Wait...is that a good deal?)

somebody has got to want a roomate!!! let me know.

theunc: where are you guys gonna be living and how much you paying? Just curious, cause I'm still trying to find a place.

haha...how funny..u're in san diego too??? as far as a place, check out this website www.venturellc.com, their closest units are Imperial and Grand Prix. These guys are really good people to deal with...especially Lisa.... she might be able to do some magic. There are alot of soon to be third years in both of these units that have not given their check out notices yet....meaning that a whole bunch of units could become available as early as July.

As far as me, I will have a 1bdrm at Imperial for $580. oh...i see u're a myspacer too...i'll add ya on buddy!

Yikes. Exams are all at 8/830 or so in the morning. So stupid me, I've had the joy of getting into a slightly different sleep/wake cycle that makes those way too early. At least I have a summer to try and snap out of it.

Also looks like Biochem is a beast that needs multiple slayings.

I wouldn't worry too much about Biochem. The department - and the handouts that they produce - are really great. Biochem is one of the classes worth going to, read the packet, study the objectives, and you'll do fine.

We're living at 3000 Grand and paying $925 for a 3 bedroom. It's on a lower floor so we got a better price. There's this big storage closet in our place that we could rent to you if all else fails. You could probably fit a bed, maybe an air mattress. I'll have to talk to redneck and dpm about pricing though. 👍

Old Mil, thanks for the reassurance!

Unc, I can't tell if you are laying down the sarcasm or not. But if you and runner are serious I'm open to considering it. There's always the living room or doubling up in the master with twin/long beds. We could even do rotations of getting the living room... Anyways you know how to reach me if serious.
