DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
DMU does seem to give out some auto invites in the beginning of the interview season with their fast track interviews they offer to fill up the September slots until they get into their reviewing rhythm. I think the stats for those seem to be a 28+ with an equally good GPA. They definitely offer interviews under that level though, but I think they actually go through these apps more thoroughly, hence the 30 day timeline. I don't think that they are still giving out auto invites though and the 30 day time frame seems to be in play for everybody.

Umm, I would say it's very unlikely to get an interview from DMU with a 24 MCAT or less..

Edit: My friend applied last cycle. She had a 3.5 cGPA and 25 MCAT, didn't even get an interview from DMU..

Thank you Zeta

I'm not sure about your stats, but don't be discouraged by some random number cut-offs. Everything is taken into account in terms of getting an interview invite/acceptance to med schools 😛

I wish you the best luck! Iamdo! :luck::luck::luck::luck:

another day and still not love from DMU for me 🙁🙁

Awwwwww yeah boooooooyyyy!!!!

I just woke up from a post interview nap. I posted my brief feelings about the interview on the feedback forums already. Here is a quick overview...

We met in the admissions office, had our pictures taken (yet again proof they use attractiveness to judge applicants), and we were moved to a conference room. We did an introductory activity to meet eachother and had a financial aid talk. Then off to the sim labs. The sim labs were cool!! While we were in the OBGYN sim room the pregnant dummy came to life and started yellig about "the baby is coming" and "how bad it hurt". The Dr. with us made two students gown and glove up to deliver the baby. It was super cool to see how the sim labs work.

Then more facility tour and we met OMM fellows in the OMM lab. The fellows were in their clinical rotations and very honest about their expiriences, whih were positive. Then lunch with students and a student guided tour. Then (drum roll) the INTERVIEW.....

The interview was very scary..... Not. They pannel of three people were really nice and it really was more of a conversation than an interview. See the feedback forum for more.

Overal I give DMU an A+.

Now waiting for the results...... !!

Few questions for you!

How was the anatomy lab?
Did they tell you # of students per Cadaver?
How long did they say it would take to get back to you?

1. No. It was locked up during our tour. But I'm sure it was nice. Our guide said they have monitors an such. It was in a new building and all the other facilities in that building were new and nice. I highly doubt the anatomy lab was any different.

2. Groups of four per cadaver.

3. Two weeks, could be sooner but no later. The admissions gal said, "If it has been two weeks and one day, and you hbent recieved an email, you can call me and I will get your results for you.

5th interview invite... I kind of hope I don't have to go to them all and will get word from my first few interviews before I buy my plane tickets! I never really thought about how expensive it would end up being. At least $500 per interview per school... Im up to more than $2500 if I buy all of the plane tickets and hotels right now. Waiting to book my stuff for this interview until a few weeks before...

Congrats on your 3 invites!!! 🙂 Or more than 3 is it now?
You're right it can get really expensive. I got 4 interview invites now. I know this shouldn't matter but I checked the accepted students for DMU and 98% Caucasian. I'm Filipino and I know they don't discriminate but I'm worried about personal biases. I'm just nervous because I Want to get into DMU so bad.

Where did you find that? 😕

I just checked 2011 CIB.

Look!

First-year class matriculants' self-reported race/ethnicity

American Indian or Alaska Native: 1%
Asian: 8%
Black or African American: 1%
Hispanic: 2%
White: 79%
Pacific Islander: 0%

You should be ok.

Edit: I'm Asian too.

I was just there. The student body is def only about 80% white.

Great time for SDN to be down last night when the 9/3ers were no doubt stuck in their hotel rooms!

Overall I was very happy with DMU--it is definitely either first or second choice for me! Great options for students, very happy students and I felt connected to the school. I was inspired by the Dean of the College's speech to us.. I felt it was an amazing personal touch.

Now what you want to know: THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS I RECEIVED FROM MY PANEL:
..more or less:

What's the deal with your GPA?.....(it's like 3.24 science, 3.42OA) Why did you get a C last semester in Anatomy? --eventually leading to: How do we know you will succeed in school? Be prepared. I never thought this would come up. Don't make excuses, explain what happened honestly then tell your story how you improved. IDK GOODLUCK.

Why Osteopathy?

What's Council Bluffs like? (Where I just moved)

Do you like Country Music, which band? (I told them I'm an avid dancer, and have done line dancing)

What are your hobbies?

What questions do you have for us?

Is healthcare a right or a privilege?

Why Des Moines?

Tell me about ACTIVITY X.

Basically guys--be nice, have a good conversation, be who you are in your application and more.

Best of luck!

PS I GOT OUT OF MY INTERVIEW AND CHECKED MY EMAIL AND NOW I'VE AN INVITE TO KCUMB! THAT'S PRETTY GOOD NEWS!

Sounds like you had a great interview. Thank you for sharing your experience.. Now if DMU just sends me the interview invitation 🙂

Don't worry about it, the small amount of minorities here mostly reflects the amount that end up applying in the first place! Chances are good that you will even be interviewed by a faculty member that is from somewhere other than the United States. There is no racial bias when it comes to determining who they accept, just be yourself! Good luck!

Of the four people in my interview I was the only white American born male in my interview room.

It seemed pretty diverse there to me.

Yay! Interview invite. I'm trying to save as much money as possible but do you guys think doing 3 interviews in one week is just asking for trouble?? I have interviews at CCOM and UofIllinois scheduled and I'm trying to do DMU the day after my UofIl one...by taking the greyhound and getting to Des Moines at 4:30 in the morning! This gives me about a couple hours to iron my suit/shower and whatnot then go to the interview at 8:00. Really excited because all three are my top choices right now, but am I running the risk of performing badly from exhaustion at DMU?? Please give me some input cause my bank account really hates me right now.

I would be really scared to do this. Not only could the bus run late, but you could just be exhausted and not perform very well during the interview. Bags under your eyes and yawning probably don't look very good to adcoms.😉

Wow that would be pretty intense. I have 3 interviews in one week but I have a few day's in between each one, which is good and bad...good for resting but bad financially since I have two fly out twice and drive to my local one. If you are capable of sleeping on a bus and think you would be capable of getting through it, then go for it, but looking like a zombie probably won't score you brownie points, especially with the introductory photograph DMU takes of you during the morning of your interview...haha

@mmikey hey, i was there with you yesterday (9.2) and i also had a kcumb invite when i got home. i was the one with perfect pitch from the opening session 🙂

anyway, for those of you who want to know about the anatomy lab, I stayed with a friend who just started there so he got me in to see it. The way it's set up, there is a prep/demo room with a window into the main anatomy lab. there are flat screen tv's/monitors at each table which displays the dissection guide and a live overhead shot of the demonstration going on in the prep/demo room. Everything looks super nice and my friend said the ventilation is awesome. you do share classes with podiatry students and some may be in your dissection group.

if anyone has any other questions, i'll try to answer as many as i can.

So somehow my AACOMAS was verified in 1 week and sent out to my schools. I haven't gotten a 2ndary from DMU in a week, and am wondering if my GPA is too low. My GPA is 3.07 (up .12 from Post-Bac year), sGPA 2.92 (up .14), and my MCAT is a 28 (up 7 from 1st attempt). I'm hoping that I get an interview since I improved in all areas and passed a post-bac, went on a medical mission trip and have some awesome LOR's from the profs at VCOM.

Somebody calm my nerves!!!

Did you go to VT undergrad?

Thanks for the input, I did not know about the introductory photograph . Well, I decided to just interview on another day instead of 3x/week. Do you guys know the cheapest way to get to Des Moines? I'm from the West Coast and plane tickets right now is ~$450. That's a bit excessive for me considering tickets to Chicago, etc. are $250. Should I fly into somewhere else and drive there?? Thanks!

I don't know if this would be the cheapest option for you, but I live in the Chicago area and will be driving to my interview at DMU. It's roughly a 6-6.5 hour drive. You could fly into Chicago and then drive if you want.

Man, after interviewing here I am getting more and more and more and MORE and MOOOORRREEEE excited to hear back. As, WAY more excited than I was to get my MCAT scores back. I guess the hardest part is that I wasn't expecting to be this excited about this step. Sheesh!

were you that impressed?

I interviewed the same day as onetyme and mmikey, and I was quite impressed, too. Everyone was very friendly and relaxed. The students all seemed very happy. I was pretty impressed by the other interviewees, too. Many had a lot of interesting life experiences. The cadaver lab was very nice, as were the simulation labs. DMU has a strong emphasis on technology, it seems. Oh, and for me the excellent gym was a nice perk.

Do they ask any ethical questions in the interview?

Do they ask any ethical questions in the interview?
Mine did not. My interview was very laidback. Most of their questions were based on my file or things I had just said during the interview. The interview seemed more like a conversation than an actual interview.

were you that impressed?

I'm telling you, the place is sick. I felt right at home. We laughed in the interview, I made acquaintances that I look forward to seeing again, and I liked the area pretty well. I very well could like other places as much but man, they are really going to have to do a number on me.

I should point out that OneTyme and I had the same set of interviewers, but I heard others say the same thing.

Does anyone know the acceptance rate post interview?

Thanks.

Does anyone know the acceptance rate post interview?

Thanks.

I just interviewed on Friday, and I think they said something like 700-800 people are invited to interview, to fill a class of 220.

Does anyone know the acceptance rate post interview?

Thanks.

In the past, post-interview acceptance rate has been pretty high (around 60-70% I'm guessing). The class is only 220 students, but DMU (like most other schools) accept well beyond that number.

For people who are going to interview at DMU on 09/09 and 09/10, do you guys know there is gonna be a big thunderstorm at Des Moines on those days? I'm a little bit concerned because I hate rainy days. California rarely rains and what shoes should I wear? If I choose to wear heels, there is a BIG possibility that I might just fall..😱 My question is probably stupid but any input would be appreciated, thanks.

The only time you'll be outside is from your car to the building. They have tunnels connecting every building, so once you're inside you can get anywhere without going outside.
