DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected pre interview post secondary today. This was really unexpected. I guess my mcat score was a killer. 3.76 cgpa, 3.70 sgpa, 24 mcat. I guess its either kcumb or lecom for me cuz the competition is only going to get worse from this point in the cycle. Good luck to everyone.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot, but I did not find any questions from previous interviews. All I saw was a pie chart about interview quality.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I'm looking for any insight into the interview process/questions at DMU.

No, it was the right link if you had searched a bit, but this will get you closer:
http://studentdoctor.net/schools/school/dmu-com/survey/26
Go to the bottom and it will have a gray bar that says "questions". Expand it, scroll down and you will find what you are looking for.

Interviewed last Friday and I think it went well. The school is really nice. Good luck to everyone!

For those accepted, have you all gotten portal information yet? I payed my initial deposit a while back, and submitted that Conditions of Enrollment form about a week later. Haven't heard anything back from DMU about receiving the deposit or the Enrollment form.

Should I call them to confirm they have received these? I don't want the deadline to pass thinking they have everything when they don't!

I was on the waitlist last year. I believe the movement changes but I wouldn't expect more than 10 seats of movement. DMU is known to not have much if any movement.

Seraphkz.. I am also hoping to get pulled off their waitlist... I was pretty much rejected at two other schools I interviewed at. I have one more at atstill in az that im putting all my efforts into but I really wanted dmu...either way ill take the first one that chooses.

I dont think we get portal information until the winter. But they told me they got my deposit but I havent heard anything about the conditions of enrollment. I think I might call them as well.

I got an email pretty much 15 minutes after I paid confirming my submission and within the hour from the admissions staff that they received my email with my signed conditions of enrollment form (which I sent via email).

Looking forward to my interview this Monday 11/21.... I was on alternate's list last year... hoping to change that this year!

Ah ok, maybe I should scan it and send it to them via email as well.

I hate calling admissions offices... I sound like such a fool on the phone with them. haha

I don't know if I should still submit my secondary here? I got a 23 MCAT, 3.59 cum. GPA and 3.33 science with a lot of volunteering, research, and clinical experience...did anyone with a low MCAT get accepted to DMU-COM this year? I wonder if they have a cut-off when giving interviews??

Umm...this is for DMU and not LECOM.

For those who are currently attending DMU, what do you like the most and the least about DMU?

Hi, everyone !
I just have a quick question. Where are the primary rotation sites for DMU? I know they give you a tone of elective time, but I don't remember from the interview nor can I find on their web site where they have you do your non elective rotations at. I have a family and I'm trying to not move them around as much as possible, so doing quality rotations in the same area would be a big bonus. Any other information on the rotations process at DMU would be helpful as well.

Thanks!!

I would say don't waste your time. Their average mcat is 27-28 and this late in the game, you will likely get rejected. But it is up to you. It is a definite no if you don't apply.

I was complete like october 8th. My science and cum gpas were high..each a 3.7, I had a 24 mcat tho and they rejected me post secondary..no interview, so yes it is late in the game. My entire app was stellar cept my mcat and straight rejection

I posted a list a few pages back. If you have a family, I *believe* you are given preferential treatment for the Central Iowa rotations for your third year meaning you will mainly be in the Des Moines area.

Did anyone watch Cops today?

I'm watching an episode right now which has the Des Moines police arresting this guy for possession of weed... and guess what's in the background? DMU!! LOL

So cool. 😎

so i was put on hold at this school after being complete...
its been over a month...
should i sent in a letter of interest?
should i email it or mail it?
any suggestions on what to write? :-s

Depends on how serious you are and where you are from. If you from the central region, you may have some good luck. But if you are from new York city it may have a little less impact. And if DMU is really high on your list, it will be better.

A letter of interest can't hurt. It'll help you, or it'll be disregarded. Either way, might as well try!

Some people say mailing it snail mail is better because it's more professional. Some say email is better because it's faster and gives them a chance to respond to it by "reply"ing. I vote email.

As far as what to write... just update them on your current, relevant activities... and remind them of why you'd be a good fit for their school.

Paid my seat deposit and submitted my conditions of enrollment in person last week!!!! : D Went up there to look at apartments. Super excited, I'm definitely going to have to learn how to drive in the snow coming from the West Coast and all lol. By the way, has anyone made a facebook group for the Class of 2016 yet : ) I know that there was some talk about it a while ago but I didn't know if anyone ever followed through with it. Best of luck to everyone still applying too!!!

Aha. I'm always up indeed, though not always on facebook. It just happens that the group requests come in when I'm online! Sorry!

I'll save the next one for you. 👍

Is is a bad idea to call the school after a couple weeks to ask if admissions decisions have been made for a specific interview date?

Had a TERRIBLE interview... 2 of the 3 were fine but the 1 person was TERRIBLE... frustrating because I busted my *** to get to this point and I probably won't get in because of this one person...

I'm sure you'll be fine. The interview isn't EVERYTHING... and sometimes interviewers are hard on you intentionally to see how you handle it. Even if you messed up... you're human, and they know this.

Just relax, focus on your upcoming interviews if you have any, and wait 2-3 weeks for the news! Stay positive. 🙂

Don't stress too much about it. I felt like I did really bad. I left DMU that day sick to my stomach. I didn't want to blow it so bad. Turns out I did very well in the interview and that was from the mouth of my interviewer. So don't stress too much. I am sure you did fine.

Haha I felt the same way when I left my interview last week. The first question they asked me was "So, healthcare, right or privilege?"

Things never seem to come out quite like you intend them especially with 3 people staring at your from all angles. Overall the interview was quite relaxed though and the school was very legit.

The reality is a decision was made the second you walked out of that room. I stayed with a student interviewer the night before and they said they all make a decision right then to accept, waitlist or decline. Then they run it by the dean who usually rolls with it.

So I sent my deposit in yesterday. DMU c/o 2016. So excited.

The interviewer implied I was in it just for the money and saying that back in the day he could make $7000 for a bilateral breast reduction and now he only makes $1200 for the same procedure. He said "That doesn't pay for the BMW's or the Jaguars." He kept insisting that I was in it just for the money.... that was just a glimpse of it. I left a pretty bad survey response to the interview portion and I even signed it. I guess I was really disappointed they didn't even ask my why I wanted to go to DMU or how I improved myself this cycle over last year's cycle (I was on the alternate's list last year). We will see I guess but I was extremely frustrated by it.

This is what happens when you let your emotions get the best of you. Why would you sign the interview survey with your name, especially if you left a bad one? It might not make a difference, but being from Iowa I assume you want to go to DMU, correct?

There's NOTHING you can do about the decision now except risk your possible acceptance by doing something like the stunt you did. Just relax and find something to do for 2-3 weeks.

I know you didn't like your interviewer... but you should still send a "thank you" email/letter. I think you should do it by email though, since it will give that one interviewer a chance to respond. I did mine by email and all of mine responded; it was pretty neat! 🙂 Their email addresses should be on a card in the purple DMU folder.

At this point I am not truly concerned. If I get accepted, great. If not, no big deal. I'm already accepted somewhere else and I had a great interview at KCUMB. Ultimately DMU would be the best fit for me geographically, but it wouldn't make or break me. I signed it because I felt that if I were going to say his name that I needed to be man enough to be able to put my name next to my comments.

At the end of the survey it states "Other comments" and in that portion I placed something to the effect that I love DMU and I hope that my comments are not taken negatively but rather as an honest opinion to the interview process. As an alternate's list candidate last year, I worked extremely hard to get myself to a better position to be accepted in this class. I wish they would have asked me why I love DMU or what I have done to make myself a better candidate.

So although it may seem that my emotions got the best of me, I did not do the survey until like 11:15 last night. I allowed myself time to cool down. Ultimately, the moment I walked out the door the interviewers already had their decision about me. My survey could hurt me or benefit me because it shows fire and passion. Either way, I will go with the decision and maybe this interview is a sign that I shouldn't go here? I don't know this. I am okay with what I did and I hope that my example and honest comments don't go unto deaf ears.

I see. Well I hope things work out for you IowaDoc! Hopefully you'll end up getting an acceptance here, but if not... congrats on your other ones!! 🙂

I am going to e-mail them and say thank you for interviewing me. I am curious to see what the responses back to me will be... lol

But thank you!

That reminds me, has anyone sent emails to their interviewers or is it better just to write a thank you card and mail it to the admissions committee?

An email seems a little too forward to me...

Email is faster, easier, and gives them a chance to respond in case they want to. Everyone checks their email.

I sent an email thank you to my interviewers and actually got one response back. About a month after my interview, she asked how the process went and whether or not I was accepted. It was actually very reassuring demonstrating how supportive the DMU environment is.

That's neat!

Got put on hold today 🙁 disappointed because DMUCOM is a top choice of mine! Sigh. Anyone have any positive experiences with being on hold here? From what I've gathered, the general consensus of being put on hold at schools means it's just a drawn out denial. Booo

Sorry to hear that. When did you interview if you mind me asking?
