DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Awesome. I will load up on nice binders. Also curious about toytles question. Do we get this huge packet of stuff with everything we need to know, minor power points we can print out, or nothing but the name of a needed textbook. I know it is early, but I am pretty excited.

You get printer tokens that cover you for about 3000 pages of printing. Most classes have handouts and PowerPoint that are available before lecture. The biochem department gives you a note packet that is fantastic. For most classes, you won't need a textbook and will only need the material that is presented in lecture.

congrats to those who got accepted. I am curious if DMU offers post interview rejections or just waitlist spots. I haven't seen anyone come on here and say "my interview was ok, but rejected" or variation of that.

DMU rejects some folks - but you have to screw up your interview pretty bad for that to happen. Most get the waitlist if they are not accepted.

Just paid my deposit... It was a TOUGH decision. I was torn between here and KCUMB but ultimately decided to do DMU... See you guys in the Fall!

I'm at the Holiday Inn awaiting my interview tomorrow. Super pumped. I've been studying the website just to get a better understanding of the quality of education and opportunities available at DMU and my mind is blown. I'm really excited to go on the tour tomorrow and see these facilities for myself. Hopefully I get an acceptance and join the rest of you jolly folk 🙂

Finally woke up from my post-interview day nap. All I have to say about today was that the campus was very nice. The facilities all look very new and the simulation lab really blew my mind. I knew that I liked this school from talking to past & present students on this forum and seeing the school for myself only reconfirmed my strong interest in this school. DMU is definitely my first choice now!

Interviewed today and absolutely loved the school! So nervous about how the actual interview went though....guess I will find out in a few weeks.

Hey michow, I also interviewed on 1/5. It was a pretty cool interview day. Do you know when we will hear back?

I have heard 2-3 weeks. i'm not entirely sure, though

they told us as well as everyone I have talked to "within 3 weeks of interview." Mine was exactly 2 weeks and 1 day, but I think some of the people who interviewed on 12/21 heard back 12/23. Maybe it is getting sooner, but more likely they worked hard to get it done before the holiday so they didn't have to worry about it after.

I have an interview here on 1/20; stoked! My preceptor (person I shadowed) is an alumnus from this school.

I'm kind of broke though, does anybody know of a cheap place or know any students that wouldn't mind me staying for two nights? Also, what's the best way to budget for transportion? I rented a car while in Arizona and it was really expensive being 22 years old. I'll be coming in on 1/19 and departing 1/21.

Thank you.

Hello again, SacTu. 😛

Glad you decided to go to the DMU interview. I know some interviewees stayed with current DMU students, but there are also hotels that give a discount to DMU students (including interviewees). Taking a hotel shuttle is definitely the cheapest option.

I wouldn't recommend the Hampton in this case; it's a great hotel but there's no shuttle. If you look through this thread, you'll probably find some good, cheap hotel information, as well as interview advice. 🙂

Good luck, sir. I'm rootin' for ya. 👍

There is a list of hosts on their website.

If you have to rent a car, and are a AAA member, they are offering a deal for under 25 drivers. Hertz will waive the underage fee until Jan. 28.

Thank you all for all of these helpful responses.

I am hoping to stay with a DMU student, not only to save expenses but to also get a better connection with the school.

I've looked at the website but was unable to locate the list containing the hosts. That would be great if you could help direct me to it, I'm currently at:
http://www.dmu.edu/do/how-to-apply/interview-day/
http://www.dmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hotels.pdf

Unfortunately I'm not an AAA member, I'm wondering if using a cab will be a better option compared to renting a car. Renting a car was about $25/day for me.

Here is the website I received in my interview invite email for the list of student hosts: http://www.dmu.edu/admission/student-overnight-host-volunteers/. I rented a cab from the airport to campus and that ran me about $20-25 (incl. tip). My host actually drove me back to the airport the next day. Other than to and from the airport, I didn't really need a car. I got into Des Moines around noon the day before my interview and left around 6pm the day of my interview. I actually walked from campus down Ingersoll Ave to what I guess was the start of downtown. It was a really nice walk with some fun shops to explore. I would have kept walking but it was unseasonably hot that day and I didn't want to be a complete hot mess when I met back up with my host.

Just my two cents anyway. Feel free to pm with anymore questions!

Best of luck!

Awesome, it's great to see that many students are offering places and even transportation! I'm definitely looking forward to this. Thanks a lot.

Just joined SDN and I'm interviewing at DMU in less than 3 weeks! I visited during their Discover DMU day and I thought everything about the school was top-notch. I'm so excited to be back. Can anyone tell me who conducts the interviews (students, administrative staff, faculty, etc)? And is anyone else interviewing February 2nd?

Some people had 2 faculty members... I had 1 faculty and 2 students. Just depends.

Good luck with your interview! Have fun. 🙂

Indeed. I had 2 faculty members and 1 student. Definitely the most relaxed interview I have ever been through.

I had a clinician, a faculty member, and two students (one was an observer though). It wasn't the most relaxed interview I have ever been through because it was my very first one, so I was pretty nervous. It was laid back enough to where I didn't crash and burn though, haha.

Just interviewed last week...DMU is unbelievable. The facilities and people blow most other schools out of the water. I couldn't get over the difference between this school and others I have visited. HUGE difference. Even if the poor outside workers at the airport are dressed like they're working at Antartica because of the cold...it is still worth attending. And the other applicants being interviewed were also very nice. Nicer than other places. That will end up being very important too, eh?

It's been about 2 weeks since the interview and I'm checking my e-mail an unhealthy amount!

I think DMU emails the verdicts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays... or maybe it's Wednesdays and Thursdays; I forgot.

Hope you got in! Good luck!

Thanks, I hope so too! Even knowing that, I still keep checking haha

Interview begins in 1 hour. 🙂

Good luck!

Any current students wanna touch on what office supplies we need for med school? Whiteboard, comfortable chair, trapper keeper, pocket protector, etc. My wife has a bunch of office depot rewards and I need to steal them before she can use them.

For me, it is binders, highlighters, and post-it index tabs to divide my lectures.

We should be getting some news very soon don't you think Michow? I am so anxious.Hope to have a positive decision so I know how i'm doing.

I've never had the courage (or need) to wear a pocket protector... so if you do, I will give you my 4 star wars lightsaber pens (batteries included). You'll be the baddest man at DMU.

I hope so 🙂 I've been checking my email a couple of times a day and am always the first in my family to get the snail mail. The waiting game is the worst part of the application process!

I know this has already been asked but the average wait for an acceptance notification following your interview is 2 wks or so right?

DMU is such a great school and I really enjoyed my day there so the wait is especially painful.

Yup it's about 2-3 weeks. You'll get an email.

Good luck! :luck:

got put on the alternate list. Anyone know how to find out where I am on the waitlist and the chances of getting in? Lastly, when is the end of their application cycle?

Woooohooo just got my acceptance e-mail!! So excited!!

Congrats.

got put on the alternate list. Anyone know how to find out where I am on the waitlist and the chances of getting in? Lastly, when is the end of their application cycle?

Unfortunately, an earlier poster who was wait listed called and was told that there is generally very little to almost no wait list movement. Don't know the actual answers, and sorry to hear that, but good luck with other schools.

A few of the current students at the interview told us that quite a few people came of the alternate list last year...it probably varies from year to year...

I would guess it was around 10-20 students last year. I can easily name about 7 and I don't know everyone in my class. The year before, it was zero.

The best thing to do as an alternate is give them updates as much as possible about what you are up to.

So would monthly updates concerning my new activities (medically related) help my chances? I really like DMU and this school is my top choice!
