Anyone else going to DMU this coming academic year? Congratulations to those of you who got in to any medical school and I am hoping for the best for those of you folks who are still interviewing and waiting.

Jpdmu- I'll see you there.

Hey-DMU Class of 2005. I dare you to post replies on this thread. We're just taking a headcount here, so no worries.

Here I spam.
Rock you like a hurricane. 😡 😉

I will soon be entering the land of milk and honey to attend medical school. I am a Naval HPSP student. Any others at DMU?
See everyone in a couple of months.

Since when was Iowa known as the land of Milk and Honey? More like the land of Corn and Mullets. I just got my 'Things to do in Des Moines' packet, and it came complete with a description of the Iowa State fair with special guest "Busyman Billy Ray Cyrus!"

I'm oozing with anticipation! Sarcasm aside, I love Des Moines. I love Detroit more, but I can't wait to join the Wal Mart crowd! See you in two months!

Hey, my bad!!!

jpdmu = Popoy
Had troubles with "jpdmu" when the server went down last month, never thought of trying to bug the people who run this this forum.... They're buzzy enough as they are I'm sure....

Glad this trend is going up...

Anyway..... WAZZZZZ UP!!!

Green007, I wanted to be Navy HPSP but got rejected.... something about a letter of recommendation that didn't sound too good. Next time I'll pick my letter writter better I guess, but I did just interview with the National Health Service Corp Scholarship Program which provide docs to the PHS (Public Health Corp).... Think about joining the Military club thing in DMU, maybe I'll see you there.

kidT, Dude, two words for you "WALMART SUPERCENTER"!!! or "SAM's CLUB"!!!

I bought tons of stuff I'm sure you'll be doing some shopping as I have been doing this past few days with my wife.

So any other places that is a must have to visit here in Des Moines for those that are in DMU?

Later peeps!!!

On a more serious note.....

I had also receive a packet from DMU regarding requirements one of which is a physical.

I'm a Kaiser Permanente member (HMO) located mostly in the west coast, needless to say they don't have a Kaiser Permanente in Des Moines. How am I to do my physical? Any suggestions, please....

Seeing I'm in Des Moines early.... Does anyone know if it's possible to get internet connection with DMU? Is there a main server on campus? Geez, I ask to many questions....

Just wanted to bumb this up!!! 😀

JP, give me a call monday or tuesday night, a bunch of us are going out wednesday.
255-6807

I'll do just that.... I hope you guys won't mind a soon-to-be-first year asking too many questions.... Thanks Josh

Can't wait to get out there and start some trouble!!!! 😀

Let's get ready to RUMBLE!!!!

Bump!

It's been awhile since I browsed on the Med student diaries and guess what....

Class of 2005 is being represented through a "Jamie" from Detroit.... You MI folks are just all over Des Moines aren't you?! 😀

This trend is two post closer to having that yellow folder with a star flashing on it (more than 15 post).... Bump!

Since my classmates are all too busy to post on my thread, I'll bother you guys for a while! Any and all incoming students who want to come out to Jimmy's American Cafe for Jimmy Buffet Night this wednesday... myself and many other second years will be there sipping on margaritas and eating chees-burgers from paradise (or as close as you can get to paradise in Iowa).
Josh Smith DO'04

I'm game.... Thanks Josh.

Wish I could be there! Does this go on every Wednesday?

Hey KidT.... I guess the 2nd and 1st years don't do this thing often.... They just finished Pharm I guess....

Josh, I'll be there around 7pm.... I just notice its a BUFFET.... Heck ya, I'll make sure I'll bring a looser belt... hehehe 😀

Post up 2005.... Bumperino!!!

Did everyone get housing yet?

I would hope so.... I was conversing with administrators and the bookstore ladies today and it seems to be a problem for some students.... Find a roof over your head not a headache before you guys/gals get here....

Does anyone know if we have to where a suit for the orientation? I know we have to dress up really well, I think, on the second day for the pictures.... I'm sure it would be really hot by then....

Any other DMU-OMC Class of 2005ers out there? Post up and say HELLO!!! and WAZZZ UP!!!

Po -

Can't wait to come out there and have a beer with you - you seem awesome. Like you, I was mesmorized by how cool everyone was. During my interview tour, some kids playing Fooseball invited me to play (both during and after my interview - those guys rocked!). The school is just cool.

Let me just tell all of you out there that apartment searching was a beyaatch! Almost everything is taken until next month, where people start ending their leases. I have to wait until July to start getting down payments sent!

Also, dress nice on Day #2 - that ID card follows you around for the rest of your days.

KidT, you might not think me awesome after I tell you that.... I don't drink (alcoholic beverage, that is).... But that hasn't stopped me from havin' a little fun 😀

Lookin' forward to meeting you and dieselkid....

Are we the only Class of 2005 that goes to this forum? We better let our fellow classmates know about this place once we meet them and get them addicted to this stuff as well....

Late' 😎

Hey there kids.... One test closer to being done!!! Thank you god! I hope you guys are all doing well. You only need to dress up for picture day, otherwise just dress comfy... They have you doing **** all day long... so avoid a tie! I guess I have to join your forum since mine has been abandoned... me sad! Any chance of combining forces?

I sure would like to hear more from Class of 2004.... Any advice for Class of 2005 would be most welcomed.... studyin', books, drinking bars, restaurant, do's and don't of DMU and Des Moines... etc....

While I'm at it, I'll go bump up Class of 2004....

Whoah - I'm not Mr. Alcoholic, or anything. I'm just making conversation! Most of my amigos don't drink at all either, and since I quit smoking, I'm less prone to drink!

So if I wear comfortable jeans and a TShirt @ orientation, will they get all pissed off? 😕

The ladies in the bookstore ROCK! They will give it to you straight and save you a lot of money by telling you NOT to buy certain books... its odd but they do. Most of you classes you do not need to buy books because the notes that they sell are so complete. Besides, you may have good intentions of reading the books that you do buy, but I always ran out of time. Med school material isn't very difficult, its just the shear volume of it that kills you.
Maybe not blue jeans and a t-shirt, kackies and a nice t-shirt is OK. If you have the same experience I did, you'll meet 50 people your first day and remember the two that live in the same building as you and have to keep reintroducing yourself to everyone else.
I have a couple of books I wouldn't mind getting rid of... I never used 'em!
Keepin it real, JS

Books to get rid of.... I'm there!!!.... Give them to me 😀 .... Free right?

Your most definitely right about the bookstore ladies.... she mentioned a couple of classes to me that she told me to just grab my undergrad books as reference and rely solely on the notes.... THEY DEFINITELY ROCK and I hope they ROCK ON!!!

I got news about the gym use before orientation.... Judi Brooks from Student Services suggested I use it in the morning when noone uses it and if I have any problems with someone there to tell them that "JUDI SAID I COULD." Don't know how much authority that would hold. So for those of you coming early... hey, the gyms available....

Anyway, NOW I got the gym, IT's TIME TO GET BUFF (which is a constant battle not won) 🙁

For those of you folks who want free access to the net, they won't let us use it until after registration something to do with payment of tuition and being an "actual" student.... We'll find out more in the orientation....

So, dress up on Day#2 and dress down on other days.... a **** load of stuff huh? That orientation stuff seems long winded, but I guess necessary..... I hope its not boring though....

I'll find out more about the attire, but I sure would like to just wear jeans or something to that effect.... IT'll be a long A$$ day, I'm sure....

KidT, drink on dude.... quit smokin' huh?

Green007, are you still out there? If so, when will you be doing your OIS for the Navy? I because I might apply again next year for the scholarship.... which I didn't get this year, as stated before, in which case I might be in the same OIS class as well as a couple of people I met in San Diego when they did a special tour for us HPSP hopefuls at the Naval Submarine base.... Ever get a chance to see the USS Mercy!!! Damn big ship.... A mobile ship hospital, never thought I'd see the day when I would able to go to around that ship, but I did....

Late'

Popoy

I am still out here. I am planning on going to OIS June 18th. That would be great if you got the scholarship next year. I'm hoping there is quite a few with HPSP at DMU.
So why did you decide to move out to Des Moines so early? Are you worried that you won't get a good apartment?
My wife and I are coming down to Des Moines this weekend to pick out an apartment. We are undecided how close we want to live to the school. We can get a nicer place that is cheaper then what we have been able to find close to the school.

Later

Good luck on the apartment search - Make sure you call the place before you go out there. Every time I went to an apartment building, their damn office was freakin' closed!!!

But I think you would be in luck if you are taking the wife down and was looking for a two bedroom, becauase most of the 1s are taken. Email me if you have any questions.

Hey Green007,

That would be nice to be a fellow HPSPer.... But not this year. I just emailed my recruiter to send my physical examination from the armed forces for the physical exam requirement for DMU. She had told me that the next rounds of application for the Navy is on December 2001....

My wife and I found a place in Windsor Terrace and its a one-bedroom. The person that use to own this place wanted to break lease... The only way we could get it was to come of start paying for it in May.... We later found out that the landlady couldn't pro-rate it.... Guess what, we are now leaving in the apartment absolutely free till June.... So that's an up side to coming early, free rent.

I understand though, some places are much cheaper away from school.... I know that Windsor Terrace has a range of 490-580 a studio to 1-bed.... I know she has a waitlist going though.... When my wife and I came, we worked our charms and got a place I guess....

If you're interested in Windsor Terrace, its located at 3333 Grand Avenue, The office is on the left side of the complex looking in the front (I believe that's the east side). Office hours M-F 9am-4pm, (515)277-5543.

Bring a light jacket, it's pretty cold right now till mid weekend as forecasted.

Good luck in your search.... 😎

opps.... I meant, we're "living" on the apartment for free till June.

I moved here early, too, to get use to the surrounding areas and not worry about to many things.... Little by little, I'm finding out about the area. Changed my car registration which cost 51 dollars....

I was adviced to change my license plates because I guess the police ticket you when they find out that you've stayed in the state for more than 30days.... something like that....

Anyway, change address with insurance, etc., etc., etc.... Now we're finally settled.

If you guys have time to kill, go visit the www.dmu.edu website and they have a pretty decent, short course on medical terminology.... nothin' much but is a pretty good warm up... Later peeps 😎

Didn't see anyone at Jimmy's that I knew from my interview at DMU.... I did meet a few folks from Drake.... I was there from 7 to about 7:30'ish.... Had a quick drink at the bar (non-alcoholic, that is).

That Jimmy's American Cafe must be a good hang out place.... There were tons of people and a long wait for tables.... Catch ya' later....

Bumperoo!

Anyone interested in working out with weights? I am looking for a lifting partner (don't worry - I'm looking to START lifting). Email me if this seems like a good idea.

sorry popoy.... dave, rachael and I all got their at about 10pm... didn't get home til about 2am. It was a good night. I guess a lot of people didn't want to miss their wednesday night finalies on TV. I guess were just more of night people than most.

That's cool Josh maybe next time. I'll see you guys around campus or somethin'... I did enjoy myself with the company of strangers.... Damn, many people.... Had a hard time parking. Funny thing, in California we would all be trying to steal each other's parking area.... Here in DSM (Des Moines), someone actually presented me with one.... So I took it 😀

KidT, I lift a little, don't mind workin' out with you come school time. I've been to the gym every morning this week and noone seems to care whether or not I have an ID card....

This weather is getting me "under the weather." Rain, not rain, cold, not cold this has equalled a stuffy nose and sore throat.... Headache and a temp increase.... Welcome to DES MOINES.... YEE HAW!!!

I love every minute of it.... sniff!!! 😎

Bumpin' up.... Post up Class of 2005.... 😎

Say hello, wazzz up, post up any questions for upper class men, etc.

Bump-er-oni, the San Francisco treat!

Hot, humid, cold, windy, rain, and now HAIL!!! I gotta tell you guys, I've experience some form of all four seasons in a matter of a week.... What type of music do any of my fellow colleagues listen to? I ask because some guy at the gym on the DMU campus was totally bustin' with this heavy metal stuff.... Then another student came in and played soft 70's.... Talk about difference in music taste!!!

Just wonderin' and bumpin this right up....

I have to agree about the ****ty music some people play at the gym. It really burns me when someone turns it to some white trash 70's-80's station and tries to lift. I am going to bring a CD player from home this summer and stick it in the weight room so I can listen to some decent music since I am in there 6-7 days a week.

It's always been my experience that someone has to have Rush playing whenever they lift.

😀

Thanks there Izlamic M,.... I was wondering when someone was going to respond to my question.... I'll go visit campus on Tuesday and see what they have to say....

I actually did a physical with the Armed forces and they're having my physical sent to me.... Now as for the immunization, well I have my Hep B updated as well as the PPD, the rest I have records for in the Philippines.... I guess my HMO didn't keep our record on it.... I would have to get a titer or something to show my immunizations to polio, MMR, etc.... Thanks again for the reply....

And welcome to SDN!!! See you around campus..... 😎

Where is the "azneer center"?

Thanks Izlamic M.... So you graduated already or are you doin' your rotations?

I'm a nice guy in general so I think I'll be fine with the admin, library, bookstore, folks... Thanks for the advice.... I sincerely appreciate it....

If your doing you rotations, where to? if residency, where to? I'm a curious first year student....

Later, Popoy 😎

I just got back from Des Moines. My wife and I have decided on an apartment complex. We are going to live at the Sun Prairie Apts. in West Des Moines just S of I-80 and W of 35. It should only take me about 10 minutes to drive to school each day. Does anyone know of any current students who are living at this complex? If so, I would like to talk to them.
My wife and I also spent a couple of nights at the Amana Colonies about an hour East of Des Moines. We had a wonderful time camping out, enjoying the food, and the ambience of the colonies. I strongly suggest it to someone who wants to get away for a little while. Later.

I think that's where I'll be staying! Sun Prairie! Hope to see you there! Email me - perhaps a carpool?

Glad my fellow colleagues have found a place to stay. Is Sun Prairie that nice? Never visited though.... KidT, what do you mean about you think you'll be there? Have you gotten a place yet? I thought you did already....

Green007,
If you're starting OIS this June, look for a Father William O'Dell.... Sounds Irish, but he as the appearance of an Asian.... He is going for the Pastoral Corp.... Nice guy.... Say hi to him for me. I met him in San Diego Naval Submarine Base during our conference. I think his rank will be a LT when he gets out of OIS.... What will you be ranked as? Just wonderin'

Did you receive your orders from the Navy yet? I think a few of my friends are having a hard time getting their orders or something to attend OIS this June.....

Again, congrats on the successful apartment hunt....

Popoy,

I will be an Ensign when I graduate OIS. And no, I haven't received my orders yet. My recruiter has guaranteed that I will be in the June 18th OIS. But I guess there are not guarantees in the Navy. I will look for your friend. Later.

wow instant message!!!
Just my friends aren't alone in their missing "orders." Thanks for sharing that....
