For those of you who actually know how to navigate this site, where do i find information about getting into a general surgery residency in the allopathic world. I have an interview in omaha, but my meeting with the program director at Henry Ford Main was ended with him saying, "you should take a year off and take the USMLE Step 1 and 2 b/c we require you score in the top 90% before we look at you, but the letters and strong work are also a big plus (yeah right)."

Rumor has it that many general surgery residencies don't even fill these days, so how do i find ones that are not cut-throat competitive?

I actually have been looking a lot into allo G. Surg residency programs even though I am only an MS-II. Obviously USMLE scores are a bonus, but not a necessity for all programs. Surgery is still one of those fields where some places are very old school some of that ideology.

As far as not filling...Last year G. Surg was very competitive. Here is the summary for 2005:

Applicants to Positions - 1522 (US grads) 932 (Others)
Mean USMLE Step 1 - 222
Positions in Match - 1051
16% AOA
57% w/ Publications

So...Obviously this is only one year, but the '80-hour rule' is really stepping up the competitiveness. Hope this info helps.

Oh yeah...if you anyone wants the 2005 Match Outcomes .pdf I can email it to them if they send me a PM w/ your email address.

Astroglide.

Navy needs surgeons....you could join up....

Of course your gayness would make you a shoe in.

There was only one unfilled spot for categorical allo gsurg last year. And you can bet yer ass it was filled immediately in the scramble.

How are you doing with the DO programs, Astro?

HATE WORKING WEEKEND NIGHTS! I missed the Bears game on top of it. 7 more shifts to go. I hope school sends me an email about not working 5 days a week.....BOOOOOOO.

Lucky...

It looks like NICU is going to be a repeat of IM hours.

0500-1730 everyday....one night of call a week...come in one weekend day to round each weekend.

The upside is babies are really cute.

Wooooo! Psych schedule, 8:30ish til 5ish. No weekends. No call. I love psych! Fun stuff.

I'm working ID right now and it is pretty nice as well (8-5). Plus I get to work with the guy who helped develop linezolid! (pretty cool if you are a nerd like me). This is awesome!

5 interviews! Including university of Iowa. Everyone at IU keeps saying how famous the pyschiatrists at Iowa are. Iowa is pretty nice, they offered to pay for the hotel the night before.

What's the best part of doing ER??? That's right.......stinky cooter exams....WOOOOOOOOO

Is it bad when I almost had to turn away cause I came about one second of stench close to hurling my bad hospital burrito into said stinky cooter? I think so.

I did manage to save a life though.....by telling her bf to run like hell......awww.....that's night right.....he gave it to her......awwww....dirty dirty ******....the both of them.

GOD i love std's

Jan-O I have an allopathic interview and 2 DO interviews at this point: Omaha, Toledo, Detroit. I'm sure more will be on the way as there are a few hospitals I rotated through who have not written yet, but who knows. I think i will pan out ok.

Nice work, Astro. It's still early in the season, just have to wait for more to roll in.

I still can't get over the huge variety that is interventional rads. They're doing everything from fixing compression fractures, coiling aneurysms, freezing tumors, radiation therapy, crazy biopsies, stents in all possible places, treating fibroids, saving people from ruptured aortas, and the list goes on. All in a day's work too! It's so nuts, and soooo cool.

Can I ask a question?

I booked my flight to Phili. Im flying from DSM to St. Luis leaving a 7:30 and getting there at 8:25. My connecting flight leaves at 9:05. Both flights are on American. Did I leave enought time between flights? Ive never scheduled less than a hour before. I don't wanna miss my connecting flight.

Should I try and re-schedule?

I dont' think NICU is a long term career path for me.

People there are pretty intense and anal retentive. The last few days have been filled with lumps and bumps figuring out how to contribute.

It's a lot of math, and not much "baby time." NIUC nurses touch babies...you just calc ckd's, ckh's, feed calories, etc. then make changes. Same with vent settings and bilirubin levels.

But even if you did get a bunch of baby time, they're infants so they sleep all the time. I think toddlers on up will be my thing (along with cancer).

It's also hella warm in a NICU. All the vents and lights and isolettes make lots of heat, and the thermostat is probably turned up to near body temperature. This may be for the babies, or maybe for the 95% female staff that works in a NICU.

Conversely I was on with superman hot and superman cool resident last night. She let me "catch" the babies at delivery and pivot twist them to the table....manage the airway...dry... Good experience!

I can see why peds residents train in this field, and I can see why they look so tired and worried all the time, too!

Gagolden,

Assuming your plane comes in on time, that should be plenty of time. STL is not that big of an airport plus you should not have to go through security again w/ American both flights. It might be tight, be if all is running on schedule, you shouldn't have any problems. Of course if you are flying out in December, it might be not such a good idea w/ winter weather.

I could've sworn STL is a pretty good sized airport. Much, much larger than Des Moines. It really all depends if the planes are right on time (which it's really a luck of the draw). I prefer to have roughly 2 hours between flights just in case. It's paid off more than once.

Got my USMLE 2 scores! Woooo... The Mr. took me out to dinner, and we got a free "chocolate stampede" because they forgot our salads. Then we practiced procreation. Ahhhh good day....Tackling the COMLEX 2 beast next Wednesday. Haven't studied at all since the USMLE. Wish me luck!!

I'd maybe check to see what time the next flight leaves and gets into Philly. If you will get there in time then you're better off just leaving it as it is because 35 mins. should be plenty of time if everything goes according to schedule, but if not and you miss your flight they have to eat the cost. Otherwise they will charge you whatever it is to change your itinerary (probably about 100 if you booked through them, maybe more if you used like orbitz or travelocity) if you choose to do that.

So I grew some balls and told the PD here that I would love to match here. It was one of those semi-awkward "I like you" moments like in elementary school with your first crush. He pretty much said "I like you" back, and then I totally klutzed out for the next 5 minutes, like trying to push a door that said "pull" and getting my white coat caught in a door. Good thing he was talking the whole time and didn't seem to make much of my dorky behavior. 😳

Hey Jane...been quite a while! Where you at right now? So I know where not to apply, you supergenius.....

Maybe we'll match together....matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.

Kelly says hi btw....and so do the girls.😍

and btw, I take Level 2 on 10/11 as well...misery loves company, eh?

OH MY GOSH!! How have you been?? Somebody told me you were applying rads too, but I think I may have known that from when I talked to you last. I haven't even seen your littlest one! I'm sure she's a cutie...how can she not be with her genes?

I'm sticking to midwest programs, but no MI or OH. Hoping to get somewhere in Illinois, Indiana, or Nebraska. Minnesota and Missouri wouldn't be bad either. Where are you applying?

I can't wait to get to the cranial questions on the COMLEX. Are you as excited as I am?

Of course I'm excited...you know I live for the pussyfoot! And the V-spread....you need to check if you have a pulse if you don't get excited about that.

I am applying to 10 DO programs and 10 MD programs

I'm doing 30 MD programs. 10 TY's and 12 prelims. I don't know anything about the DO programs. I've heard good things about MCG and UF. The only program we have in common is Peoria! Whew!!

Did you have to apply for internships for any of those? I hate the whole separate first year thing...makes things so complicated.

I'm applying for 1st year positions as I get interviews...otherwise I might just do my first year at a DO hospital....

Right now I have 1 MD interview at Savannah, so I applied to their IM prelim program....will add as I get more interviews.

If you had your pick....where would you like to end up?

Honestly, any of the places I applied to! We were pretty careful to apply to places we wouldn't mind ending up at. Except maybe Chicago. I'm personally not a fan of that city, but we applied there anyway because there are just so many programs there.

I checked, and there are three flights from St Louis to Phili after mine. So If my flight is late, I should be able to get bumped to the next one with out any cost to me. Thanks for the help.

Oh, by the way. So far I got 7 MD interviews so far.
Lucky, are you going to be in KC on the 30th? Cause I will, and its my Birthday!
Oh, more info, Level 2 score is in. Dammmit, down 35 points. Gotta go figure out what percentile that is cause the 2 digit score makes no sence cause that one went up 3!

Here's a pic of my girls....the little one is Cami...and you've met Teagan already

Wow, Teagan looks like Kelly so much! I love their hair color. I can't believe both of them are so big!!!

Gagolden, I won't be in KC till December. Would have loved to celebrate with you though! If I remember correctly about your first COMLEX score, that means you still aced the COMLEX 2 even with the 35 pt difference! Good job!!

Congrats to everybody on their interviews so far!

Wow it is good to hear that everyone is getting interviews...I was hoping to see you DMac in the good ole QC, but if you are ever in town let me know. I know it is amazing I did pass my boards and year two, about freaking time. Rotations are pretty easy so far.....I did path and am finishing up anesthesiology right now. It is very much see one, do one, teach one on this rotation...pretty sweet. I love intubating patients when you can take their teeth out. First case was awesome because it was a boob job on a girl i graduated high school with, pretty funny that I got a boob job right out of the gates....ah life is sweet.

I am back from Europe and ENGAGED! For those of you who don't believe, it's ok I don't think she does either😉 I still don't have any official invites for neurosurgery interviews though I got shot down by Garden City which I think only has 3 approved spots for all 6 years, so you win some you lose some. I got my COMLEX II scores back and scored about 35 points higher than last time but I have no idea where that puts me percentile wise, how do we resend our new scores, or if I put update my scores will it automatically? Good luck everyone with interviews. I start ER tomorrow so hopefully 3 days a week will be fantastic. 5.5 more months bitches.

Cremaster, congrats dude!!! Let me know if she still says yes when those roofies finally wear off  . Hard to beat getting engaged on a European vacation.

I am back from Europe and ENGAGED!

Congrats my friend.....what's his name? ha...i kill me. seriously though....congrats. As for ER....I hope you don't have to work the weird hours I did.....boo to that.

Congrats congrats!! Very happy for you two, can't wait to meet the lucky lady!!

By the way, I experienced the corn maze for the first time today. It was shaped like three tigers. Very neat.

I shaved my back hair into a pattern of three tigers.......and then just sprawled out near a corn field.......no one was the wiser....

That would be some nasty black corn hair..............

I got my first interview invite to a NS program in IL. It is a pretty good place so I am pumped!

My fiance's mother had a medical problem that made us come home from our trip early and it turns out it was renal cell carcinoma and she has to have a right nephrectomy. I haven't done any urology rotations, but any info you guys wanna share about any patients you saw with it please let me know. It looks like it is all local with no metastatic disease, so we are taking that for what we can. Please just keep her in yoru thoughts and prayers.

How bout them............dolphins?

FYI - cremaster asked this girl to marry his ONLY after i rejected his ass (or weiner for that matter). Do congrats cremaster to finding someone who is second best and not exactly what you wanted but were willing to settle for. Maybe i'm jealous now? Crying out loud at the moment. So Dartos and/or Frenchie, wanna come over and play with kiss dolls.

I started Renal today. I saw three patients today that had RCC in the past. All had non-metastatic disease. All three were at least 6 years out with no signs of any recurrence. Now one was there with CKF, but its secondary to DM, and hes doing bad cause he has no reserve. So... keep that im mind I guess

I'll bring mine. This time no "hiding" them. They still smell funny.

They do cryoablation for some RCC lesions. That way she can keep both kidneys. They'd have to work her up to make sure she's a good candidate though.

I thought I smelled Serbian man!

Working 10 hours overnight, then coming home and trying to sleep to the sounds of three rednecks putting up drywall........two days in a row. They said it would take 2 days to finish.....which would have been yesterday but on Tuesday they quit for the day at 1:30 and then yesterday at 3. What kind of union gig do they have?? This is why I'm not opposed to cheap labor.......open up BOTH of the borders and bring back the Bering land bridge.....don't want to exclude anybody if it means I can sleep.

WOOHOO! done with boards....till February. Stupid COMLEX. I kept having conflicting feelings. I didn't know whether to cry or laugh for some of the questions. At least for the USMLE it was a consistent urge of sobbing through the whole test.

I laughed mainly at the questions...my favorite question involved one answer option being to palpate the vaginal introitus for a sacral dysfunction....I'd pick that one every time!

That's because your "palpation" of the introitus is what causes the sacral dysfunction!

Haha, I think I had a similar question too.

Which introitus are you thinking of......there's a more proximal one to the sacrum....I think portier is familiar with that one though.

NO MORE STUDYING UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!!!!

A) Who is Dr Dicky? Why is he mentioning my introitus?

B) NICU takes like 900 hours....like I get up at 4:45 and don't leave until 6pm. Day when all you have are "feeders and growers" it gets long. Days like today when you go to lunch then come back and do lines and deliveries all day kick ass. I like being busy, but I miss the sun in Balboa.

Last week I didn't know what I was doing, and this week I want to be the guy sticking lines and writing orders. I need meds...more meds.

I also need to clone Lindsay Lohan, but secretly replace the regular brain with Foldger's Crystals (Luckys brain). That way she'll be really hot and way too smart for me.

****...that won'g work.

Folger's crystals? I'm taking that as an insult. What about fresh roasted grounds??
