why do they make the test so hard that >1/2 the class fails...........I don't know if they know this or not, but we don't study stuff we never see in the hospital, or the genetic gene assay enzymatic protein deficiency that is theoretically possible in the rare variant form............that my friends is why I'm not going into internal medicine..........I like masturbation like the next guy, just not the mental form.

WOAHAHAHAHA....it's been a while guys! Glad to see y'all are doing well!!

Dartos, thanks for the pic of your adorable, and all-too-GROWN UP kiddo! I can't believe how big he is! And I can definitely see you doing very well in peds...great decision.

Cremaster, glad to see you're still working towards your goal of NS. Gotta do what you love, man. I'm on anesthesiology now too....and I can't imagine doing it either! Great freaking lifestyle, but not for me.

Krank, how's the girl? I bet she's big now too! Getting geared up for boards?

Rotations are great! I liked a lot of things, especially medicine and peds. But I think I just might go and do radiology. Tough choice to make, but I think it's what I fit best in. I still have ER, so that's still in the air, but I'm pretty sure I'd put medicine before ER. And yes, gagolden, you already gave me the "are you fvcking crazy" look regarding radiology.

And a big hello to everybody else! Except for portier...I get to smack his ass in realtime.

Well hello Lucky....Maddie is doing awesome, I am still trying to talk Dartos into an arranged marriage of some kind, but the negotiations have hit a wall of sorts. Yeah the board studying is on going for me right now, I am begining to feel like class is a waste and have started staying home more to study for boards. I also want to tell you congrats, I already told your man but I figure you need one too. That is pretty exciting stuff. Have you two come up with a time that the ceremony is going down? After graduation or before?

Yes....lucky smacks my ass in real time...and it makes a meaty sound.

I'm so ready to finish this week. GD IM. I've been reduced to making notes and listening to the attending do my dictation. It's like I don't even have a penis. Krank, how do you get along without one? Give me advice. (just kidding...I know you have a kid and I don't...)

Will surgery be better? Who knows! At least it'll be different. At least I won't have to put up with rude Dr RR....

I still feel like I could do another month on this service and not know enough... 👎

Anyone know a good pocket ref for Peds? I have some interview rotations coming up for the Navy and want to seem as prepared as Dartos' wife was to see me, him, and cremaster all protesting the people from the future who "TOOK OUR JOBS!"

Bernard I have harriet lane the biggest pocket reference in the world.........but it did come in handy at Blank Children's when I rotated there.

Lucky I did the same and congratulated Dmak but not you too, so congratulations to both you guys. I'm sitting in the Panera that astro is usually at, and he is right I've seen some super hot girls walk through here, but it is getting a bit closer to the 8 mile boundary limit so every now and again some interesting people walk in. I have medicine next month, and it will be my 2nd rotation in it, so hopefully I will pass the test, but I"m guessing I won't since I read most of the stuff and think don't care, don't care, don't care...........I mean diltiazem, verapamil, who gives a ****..........well besides all the IM people out there😉

Thanks for the congrats, guys! We're gonna have the church ceremony and reception in Indiana/Illinois by where his parents live, the weekend before graduation, and then do a San Francisco reception the weekend after graduation. It'll be 3 weeks of fun and dressing up and stuff.

I just emailed you something for IM, cremaster, to your DMU account.

Good luck on boards, Krank! I do not envy you one bit...and yeah, class felt like it was pretty much pointless at this time last year.

Hey this may be a dumb question, but what the hell are we supposed to study for OMM part II, and if you say cranial I"m going to fly to philly and crap on someone...........2nd lucky are you taking USMLE II?

People have said it's like, 12 consecutive mini-SPALs, and that we have nothing to worry about. It's pass/fail, so even if you don't finish one or two, you can still pass. Just play the part of the nice, caring doc, and should be ok. That's what the interns say! And muscle energy/soft tissue everything.

I've given some thought to the USMLE 2 and I think I'm gonna take it. Just the computer part and definitely not the clinical skills part. Well, the thing is, Dmak and I are looking at this one program, and it's not the most competitive, so I might be ok with just step 1, but in case we want to end up in like, Minneapolis, or Chicago, I will need step 2. So I was thinking (as for now) USMLE 2 in September/October, COMLEX II in October, and COMLEX PE sometime in 2007. We're trying to save all but 2 weeks of vacation time, so it looks like we'll finish rotations mid-March in 2007. But I might change my mind...spending a total of $1500 on exams is NOT appealing...

that's what I was thinking, maybe trying take the USMLE early, but I don't want to spend that much on tests either. Now what book are you going use for OMM, or are you just going to go over the old OMM notes from school?

I have that Savarese book for OMM, it's green, softcover...that and maybe some old notes if I can even find them, probably should be enough.

I'm trying to decide now which question source to use....USMLEWorld, USMLEasy, or Kaplan...have heard good things about all of them. That Exam Master sample on the portal sucks...the questions are bad, and not very helpful. Whatever I decide, I'm just gonna go for a 3-month subscription.

Are you planning on sticking to osteopathic NS programs, or allopathic? Probably a good idea to do the USMLE 2 for allopathic NS.

So I'm not the only one who thought the Exammaster sucked?

Cool.

I can't wait to get done with this roation....and for all my work I get to fail the test.

I'm SOOOOOO stoked.

Cremaster...the Chief Resident at Walter Reed sent me an email that says there are good references at www.nccpeds.com. I checked it out, and printed Dave's Tips volumes 1 and 2...since they're by a guy who worked where I'll be working...NICU.

I haven't logged in or posted in a llloooooonnnnnggg time, but I thought you guys would like to know some current DMU happenings.

Apparently there is a committee on campus that is looking to make ALL classes mandatory attendance. Some of the guest lecturer's were upset that they didn't have an appropriate turn out.

Shouldn't affect the class of 08, but I do feel sorry for subsequent classes if this goes through.

Back to Renal and Boards studying.

Two questions: What is the actual likelihood of this being implemented? When are "they" planning on implementing this?

I was really looking forward to skipping class whenever I didn't feel like rolling out of bed...

that would be officially completely and totally lame. i think i'd pretty much have to decline my seat if that goes into effect.

On the topic of mandatory attendance:

When I was still on campus, and still SGA wired, I went to lots of meetings at the local and national level.

Unless the pendulum has swung completely the opposite direction, this is not going to happen.

When I asked Dr Reed about this about 2 years ago he said, "If you have laws, you have to have police. I'm not interested in making DMU" into a police state. (that last bit is my addition and not verbatim.)

NOVA has mando attendance, and now has to decide what to do with about 60 students who had someone else swipe their badges through the detector for each lecture. They've become a police state. Now that I think of it, this was about a year ago, so NOVA probably has a final outcome on this.

IN ANY CASE: 10 years of military background being policed constantly from above and below gives me this opinion: If you micromanage your people, they become entirely too reliant on you and/or they hate you and find ways to get away.

So, this would be a bad PR move (see NOVA forums) and a bad idea...to stifle to freedom of tomorrow's medical professionals.

Here is the good Doctors take on the DMU happenings....People at DMU need to grow the **** up and that includes guest lecturers as well as the students. People are constantly try to pull out the professionalism card when they are the least professional people. I dont think going to class is going to make you a better doctor and frankly most of the lecturers suck ass. That is why God invented notepool so I dont have to suffer through the constant crap these lecturers spit at us. Maybe if our school wrangled lecturers that were worth listening to and the lecturers were prepared and ended on time then more people would probably go. It really chaps my ass when they run into my lunch hour. And the final word is this....Go class or dont go to class it is up to you and lets face it we wont learn **** until rotations anyways, so **** em. WE PAY TUITION SO THEY ARE OUR BITCHES NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Pimpin aint easy...

HEY LUCKY!!!
super congrats to you two crazy kids!
I think rad is a great fit for you. Would you want to do strictly diagnostic or do some interventional or somethin else? As for me im still flip flopping. I'd do gen surg if the lifestyle didnt suck so bad, or if i was single. I like peds but i don't like the fact that your job options are so limited and you work more but make less than fp. IM is cool but I don't know if im that anal retentive. That's why im comtemplating going back to my first interest, ER. You do procedures, you do some medicine, 3 twelve hour shifts, no call and you see every type of patient. Hard combo to beat. I still like peds though.

Whats the big D thinking about going into?

Hi Dartos!!!

I totally agree with your take on those specialties...I'm on ER now and it's really fun. For now, I'm leaning towards diagnostic radiology...I'll start thinking about fellowships during residency. I like the diagnostic stuff, which is probably why I used to want to do pathology, but radiology is a lot more exciting to me now, and I'm definitely not intellectual enough to be a pathologist.

Big D is still bouncing between ER, IM, and FP. He's still undecided about fellowships like infectious disease and sports medicine, or doing urgent care as an FP.

It's getting pretty exciting, thinking about residency and such. I can't believe how close we are to making a real decision! Are you guys planning on staying in MI?

I just did my second day in FP and I am pretty sure Im going to do fp. I just feel like this was what I was looking for. Very general, non malignant lifestyle, and you dont just see gomers or peds. I know it's not for everybody but I REALLY like fp.

At this point I dont think well stay in MI, the malpractice rates are among the highest in the country and if I go into fp i can probably get a residency in pretty much any area of the country. Were thinking either denver or somewhere in Indiana. I know Indiana sounds like a lame choice but all our college friends live there and they have kids the same age as brady and malpractice is really low and you get a lot more for your money there than most places. Plus Indy is a really nice city.

I think you are intellectual enough to do anything my compadre, but I totally agree that radiology just seems like a better fit for you than path, mostly because I like the thought of spending some time in a dark room with you 😍

those options all sound good for Dejan, don't know which he would like best though. I used to like infectious disease but after seeing what they actually do I lost interest fairly quickly. Sorry for the super long post 😳

That's awesome that you found something that is exactly what you're looking for! We are looking at Indy too! We're basically trying to stay in the midwest, probably only going to look at programs in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and Indiana. The list of radiology programs is a lot shorter than the IM one, so that'll be the limiting factor. California is basically ruled out, but I wouldn't mind a vacation home in Sausalito or someplace else we can't afford. Stupid west coast housing market.... 😡

ER's been pretty fun...except for the "Oooooh I have back pain" "For how long now?" "Oooooh about 12 years" "I see" conversations. I still have such a blast with the kids though...and that's what makes it hard because I loved peds and IM was awesome. And that's what all the FP residents said for the reason they picked it, cuz they just loved everything, but didn't want to do any one thing exclusively. Kind of like your sex life, eh Dartos? 👍

I don't know how Rheum/Ortho worked for you guys.

They have announced that it will be 80% mandatory attendance (20/25 classes). Will subtract 2 points per class you miss after that.

Another 1 test course, haven't decided if I like those yet or not.

Time to get back to Board prep.....woo hoo.

Can't wait til next year.

Yeah I agree why would Boesler tell us that we have to go to 80% of the classes....I mean is this like OMM 3.

Lucky,
I am planning on realistically thinking I can get into a osteo program because a couple of the surgeons I know know people, and told me that they mostly just want someone who works hard and they get along with. One of my friends matched at Garden City and he said not one program asked him his board scores. So my plan is to rotate at Providence in MI 2nd to last rotation this year, then doctor's in Columbus OH last rotation, take two weeks off and study/take COMLEX II and possibly USMLE, then do a month at Bromen in IL or try to check out PCOM. My serious consideration applications are going to Yakima WA, Cook County Chi, Providence, Bromen, Doctor's, and probably PCOM for Osteo, allo I don't think I have a chance, but I'll put some on my application anyways. I'm still a little torn because I like general surgery as well, and I will definetly rank Mt. Clemens #1 if I go that route, but I'm hoping my stellar good looks and super great personality will get me into neuro😉
I'm glad you and D are getting things figured out for residency, and Dartos you too. We all gotta do what makes us happy, which is hard to figure out when you are trying to decide if you'll be happy doing it 20 years down the road.

About mandatory attendance at DMU. It's gay, when I went I didn't learn that way. If you stick me in a room for 8 hours you are lucky to get my ADD ass to pay attention for 2 hours, so hopefully they don't go to that. I understand lecturers are unhappy about attendance, but from the ones I saw last year they weren't worth going to most of the time anyways. So I'm sorry 2nd years and first years cause that sounds rediculous, though I do remember a lot of ortho classes being mandatory for us too!

Lastly a wise man once said: "This is worse than being Kevin Federline's Magic mirror"

peace out

I think those are good plans cremaster...I'm sure you'll get in somewhere.

Yeah, I agree that mandatory class attendance is not a good idea. I mean, if I were a guest lecture, I wouldn't care who showed up or not. The whole class will still be there for my exam! MUWAHAHAA :meanie: Seriously though, the school needs to respect students' differences in study habits, and some people just do better studying by themselves with their own resources. And judging by our class, where by second semester, attendance had probably dwindled down to 30% (i have no idea, i wasn't there 😛 ), our board pass rate was still great at what was it, 94%? And our class average was a good 10 points over the national average....or was it 15? Anyway, my point is, not going to class did not seem to hurt our class for boards. And lecturers who don't make their ppt's available on blackboard are just spiteful.

My cheap $0.02.

*edit: nevermind, our class average was 530, 20 pts above the nat'l average.

Are you gonna be in Des Moines sometime in August? We'll be there for 4 weeks...I'm doing cardiology and he's doing neurology. We can stress about ERAS together...well, I guess SFMatch for you....awesome plan!!!

do they supply students with scrubs up in Mason City (for OB/GYN)?

I'm not as lucky as lucky, but...yes they do provide scrubs.

Lucky,
I will be in des moines for the last two weeks in august studying for boards and taking comlex II on august 23 in Ames. I still haven't decided about USMLE II, so we'll see. The good news is since I'm on vacation I can study all day and play ps2 all night, fantastic. It will be nice to see you guys then.

I treated my first patient with low back pain today. She came in all hunched over, taking only baby steps. She was super sensitive to touch in the paraspinal L4-S2 region and was almost in tears when I tried to examine her. I laid her on the exam table (was more like a dentists chair, but flattened out enough), did some ST, lots of strain counterstrain, and only a little HVLA, and she was practically skipping out of the room when I was done. It was "amazing" (in her words). It felt good to know I actually helped someone when all I see every day is non-controlled diabetes and HTN.

The protesters held signs reading, "Thank God for Dead Miners," "God Hates Your Tears" and "Miners in Hell,"

...wtf?

Hey just incase you guys didnt know, dont do HVLA on kids, WOW thanks for the knowledge Dr Wooley. OMM this early in the morning blows. Cremaster and Lucky give me a shout when you hit town.

It's not to brag, but more to celebrate:

I just got my approval for a Peds rotation at Naval Hospital Portsmouth.

This gives me NICU at Bethesda, Peds Surg as San Diego, and a general Peds at Portsmouth. All 3 sites that have Peds residencies...I'll have a chance to work there, see how they are, and hopefully make a good impression.

This is a bit to be excited about for me, and I wanted to share with the guys who like to make dick jokes, and pretend to be gay....and the girls, too!

I had a wicked surgical adventure last night...21 feet of old dead perfed bowel in a 44 y/o woman. It was pretty gross in some parts, and very sad all the way through....even the parts where we milked the poop out of the immotile tube.

All I can say is, "Go Bird****...I'm glad you like surgery."

I've gotten URIs in all my touchy-feely-i-love-patients rotations. IM, Peds, and now ER. Go radiology. I'm sick of being sick. 🙁 I bet I'll get sick on FP too....stupid germies.

greetings fellow dmu-ers. do you guys have any suggestions for a two week surgery rotation in the detroit area? i know there are a few places but i was wondering if one is better than another.

ok, so the LBP patient I "cured" a couple days ago came hobbleing back in today saying it's back and that she was treated yesterday by another DO resident which didn't work. So I did the same stuff as before, made the right side better, but her left was in even worse spasm when I was done then when she came in. So now I feel bad for getting her hopes us from the first treatment, and letting her down this time. In the end we just drugged her a ss and sent her home.

I did four weeks at Mt. clemens, pretty good experience, you do one night of call a week unless you did weekend call. Friendly residents. Astro loved his surg rotation at bicounty, but it is a bit smaller than mt. clemens. Ive heard good stuff about genesys and botsford but thats just hearsay.

Never underestimate the psychiatric illnesses possible in LBP patients. Always be on the lookout for somatiform or somatization. There is also an interplay of histrionics and narcissism in many cases....manipulation of others is a key part of narcissism.

Before you ask, no...I'm not going into psych...I've just had to deal with my mother for about 30 years.

I've been searching the DMU website and I haven't been able to find any information about deferring my acceptance. Could any of you direct me to that information or provide some personal insight into the deferred admissions process at DMU? Thanks in advance!

I thought about doing this when I applied and got in, but you have to submit a paper to the dean, and if approved then you get a year off, but if not approved you don't get accepted anymore. Kinda risky

yay! i passed the USMLE!!!

It's been a while since I visited this site thanks to my graduation from SDN and acceptance into myspace.

Lucky - you make a great point about getting sick: I see many people getting ill in the hospital. You'd be a great radiologist b/c unlike the other person I know going into that field, you are nice, pleasant, and NOT snobby. AND you have the grades and boards to do it i imagine.

About psych patients, they will take every bit of your time which you allow them to. I'm a fan of the directed interview and NOT believing a word they say. I cannot stand fibromyalgia and any other pocket bood diagnosis given to these *******. my back and feet hurt at times too.

Cremaster and I managed to spend $100 at Skinny's last night (the bar next to bi-county). Don't ask me how we did it, but we did. Congrats to us.

Go Hawks!

Alleged Drunken Neurosurgeon Arrested In Operating Room

POSTED: 4:53 pm EST March 9, 2006

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The chief of neurosurgery at a California hospital is on leave after deputies had to wrestle him to an operating room floor.

Sheriff's officials said Dr. Federico Castro-Moure was arrested Monday night on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol and interfering with officers.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Department said he became belligerent after two other surgeons at Oakland's Highland Hospital determined a man's injuries weren't life-threatening. A department report said the neurosurgeon insisted the man would die without immediate attention.

Officials said he "threw a fit" when told equipment had to be brought from another hospital. A nurse wouldn't let him operate until the instruments could be sterilized.

Officials said he took a swing at deputies after they were called to intervene. A witness said the cursing man announced he is a doctor and declared, "I'm going to do what I want."
