Someone has the same name that publishes the succulent news in Texas.

I'm on neurosurgery at Mount Clemens and I am starting to hang out with the residents at Providence, and I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT. We did a crani on a girl with a massive head trauma (car vs semi) where the fractured bone was entirely under the inner table and we had to take it out in pieces and cauterize part of the cerebral cortex that was bleeding from being stabbed.

As for rotations, I agree about St. Joe's I'm going back after this month for FP, but thank God I will be off site most of the two months. I have heard good things about Garden City, POH, Providence, BiCounty, Mount Clemens, St. John's.

Hope everyone else is having fun on rotations and is getting ready for the beginning of the end..................

Whadayaknow....

I come in at midnight for some "drunk trauma" and it's a quiet night...damn!

Cremaster, let me know when you get to put in a shunt emergently...that'll probably get a good story.

Sorry for posting.. but I did interview at DMU is some former life.. anyways my question is thus:

I still remember that biochem prof (I think) who laughed/giggled ad nauseum. In fact, I had to bite my tongue REALLY REALLY hard to stop myself from cracking up. I'm sure he's a great professor, but HOW DO YOU STAND HIS PATHOLOGICAL LAUGHTER??

I have tons of them catch me on aol sometime, and the laughing was actually not that bad since it made biochem more interesting

was he a bald guy or a guy from texas with a goatee? either way they both come off a little kooky but it was worth all the giggling. I was terrified of biochem but I ended up doing quite well in it b/c the professors were freaking amazing. One of the most well taught courses I ever took. The nice thing about those guys is that they are very social and friendly with the students so you develop a good rapport with them. What do you think of U of I? I'm from Chicago and was just curious about what you thought of it.

Dr Boesler is no longer part of DMU as of May 15, 2006. Talk about strange, he said it was for personal reasons but I think the school might have given him the boot after all the rumors of him and students. Anyways he is out and I think it sucks.

Do you think this will affect DMU's stellar OMM reputation?

That really sucks, all of the students I spoke with on several occaisions said he was one the the best "teachers" that DMU had to offer... hope they find a suitable replacement.

The other Dr's in the OMM department are very good and should be able to handle the load until a replacement is found, but I do think that this could change our reputation in some ways, I mean when you are number one is hard to get any better. Look at what happened to the Lakers when Shaq left, we will still be good but we might drop off for a few years and then come back even better. Who knows, I know I dont. But I cant say I was glad to see him go, I mean there are others that should go, freaking one guy in phys blows, finasteride.

is Dr. Metts still there?

or was it spelled Meets, i can't remember

Well, the neuroanatomy guy retired.

Meetz or whatever his name was is gone and so is good ole knuessel, damn i miss always guessing E

that is horrible that boesler left, he was a major advocate for the students at dmu. I don't think it will make DMU a bad school, but he did a great job of getting us fired up for OMM. Anyways I got to do some sweet surgeries today, so life is good. Hope board studying is going well for any 2nd years out there, and for 3rd years I suppose since we have to take them again in like 4 months

Hey Awesome-O, how's it hangin w/ the tan man...isn't he cool?! I'll have to stop and chat longer the next time I run into y'all!

How do you guys out on rotations think that Boesler leaving is going to affect us 1st years for setting up our rotations next year?? The admins have already assured us that our sites that we have now are solid...typically admin b.s. I have a hard time believing that this would help w/ the possibilities of setting up new sites (which he was supposedly in the process of doing.

Any thoughts about this??

Has it been determined who is taking over as dean of clinical affairs for 3rd years?

I think you guys will be fine. There's no guarantee of securing new sites regardless of who is setting them up. We lost the Minnesota one after our match, didn't we? And I know this'll sound cliche, but rotations are really what you make of them. And since you have so much freedom for 4th year rotations, it doesn't matter who's at the helm at DMU because you end up setting them all up yourself.

I highly recommend Mercy-North Iowa in Mason City for your core hospital and electives. It sounds like the guys up in Michigan are all having a great experience too. Choose wisely, use the clinical affairs site searcher, and don't worry too much!

Michigan is a very DO friendly state and they have a wide variety of residencies associated with the hospitals: ranging from IM with fellowships in cardiology and endocrine to Neurosurgery, ENT/OMF Plastics, and General Surgery with Cosmetic fellowships......like lucky said rotations are what you make of them, sometimes smaller hospitals are better because you get to do more, while the bigger hospitals are the places with the programs so you get face time there. Either way from most of the people I've talked to all over the country they are having a great time and enjoy it a million times better than classroom work!

The email that we got from Dean Reed says that they are currently interviewing people for the position and that Dr Schaffer will be doing things in the mean time. Obviously they are probably going to interview for two positions because I doubt someone is going to want to step in and fill both voids but you never know. I dont think rotations will be affected now that Boesler is gone, he was a great student advocate and got you ready to go for OMM, but as Lucky said we did lose Minnesota under his watch. There are tons of rotations out there for us so I dont think we need to add to it but I am sure we will still be able to get some more in the future.

Hey lucky where and when are you taking the USMLE because I am consider taking it too the same week I take COMLEX II but you know I can't make decisions like that without you

I just scheduled it today for Sept. 12 in Ames...haven't set up the COMLEX yet, but likely going to take it on 9/20 with my man, in Illinois somewhere. I just want to pass the COMLEX. A lot of the places I've looked at require USMLE scores, so they probably won't even glance at my COMLEX ones, and even if they do, who's to say they know how to interpret them? And I'm gonna pick the "do NOT automatically send new scores to programs" on my ERAS...I'd rather shell out the $50 later than to send a poopy score!

When are you thinking of doing it? Are you gonna do both the SFMatch and the AOA match?

Lucky,
I"m taking COMLEX August 23rd in Ames, but I haven't scheduled the USMLE. I am probably gonna do both, but I'm not rotating at any MD neurosurgery places because odds are I won't get in. One fourth year at DMU matched and Northshore Long Island or something which is allopathic for neurosurgery. I'm starting to hangout with the residents at Providence now, and it is also where a fourth year matched for neurosurgery from DMU. What I am worried about is if I want to do a fellowship will I need all 3 USMLE steps to sit for an allopathic fellowship.............so I may take it for ****s and giggles right around when I take COMLEX. God I hate boards, and the MD DO dispute.

Wow, I didn't know that somebody matched allo NS. That's awesome!

I'd love to see a match list for the 2006ers...the one online is still the 2005 one.

I'm with you on the fellowship thing.

You must be my lucky star....

'Cuz you shine on me, wherever you are.....

ER is slow...I'm going HOME!

All I've seen so far is a viral rash and an obese black man with a headache and no kidneys.

Maybe the weekend will warm up!

It's gonna be all sunshine, baby!

You are efficient with your packing. I should get my **** together...I hate moving. I am so not looking forward to moving every month next year. *Sigh*

seriously... what are you doing up at 5:45am???

doesn't it feel good when some dumba$$ resident makes you, an MS3, look like a rockstar in sugery?

I was up cuz I round on all the patients before the doc gets there.

A lot of the FP residents have absolutely no interest in surgery. Good for the med student, I guess! And what did they do? Or, did not do?

simple stuff, like suturing or hold retraction, or just keeping up with the flow of things

Lemme take a wild guess at who this was.....

Start with a "T" and end with and "i"?

Tell me what you super geniuses think of this case and what would you have ordered? 12 year old kid comes into the clinic, very wt family. Shes here cuz she woke up puking and then had diarrhea. Nothing weird there. While I'm examining her I notice she has a fine papular rash on her face sparing the scalp and the neck. Doesn't look like fifths rash either. The dad is clueless and the stepmom thinks birth mom noticed the rash 3-4 weeks ago. No history of fever no cough no congestion, nothing but the rash and the GI. Another kid at home has the puking as well. I was just curious what you guys think of this and how you would approach it.

I'd hit it with the ER shotgun (CBC, BMP, Urine), in adition get Rapid Strep Screen, and check the rest of the body for any other skin symptoms.

(I think this is the average answer, and I don't have a clue what else to do besides get out the DERM book and flip it next to her.)

If the rash started 3-4 weeks ago, they might be unrelated phenomena. Rotavirus is going around right now and would explain the sibling having it as well. The rash could just be a viral exantham but it is hard to tell without looking at it. Like Portier said, your main approach would be get the basic labs and make sure that they are hydrated, plus rule out the bad things (i.e. meningiococcemia, severe dehydration, etc.).

I asked the registrar's office and they officially said that we can do the two dates in July (the 26th and the 27th). So if you want to get it over with, like me. I don't think those spots over flowing yet.

So...the 26th and the 27th...

Those dates work ****loads better for me. I'm going a MHA independent study kinda thing that month 👍 ....the August dates put in taking it during my Peds Hem/Onc rotation...which is ****e. 👎

I think I'm going to take it when you do, Babyruth....except I'll be taking it in Hotlanta.

Well everybody....it's Dmak time. Hope everybody is doing well. Haven't been reading or following this thread, just giving my support to make it the longest running thread ever....and when the 07 class graduates, we should move it to a different forum....maybe....the greatest forum ever forum. Rotations have been fun. Nothing quite as satisfying as having a patient crash in the morning and then doing a digital rectal exam that afternoon. I cried that night. Too bad about the Boz...I liked him. The future Mrs and I are busy planning our day of magic away. We looked at some reception sites and even found a castle in Dyer, IN complete with Emus....damn right. Giant flightless birds would be the scariest thing in the world while drunk. I'm still trying to find a field that will accept me for who I am......a giant hairy serbian. I'm starting to think I would have made a better war criminal than doctor....but don't you judge me. Getting ready to move all over the midwest in the next year. Kind of irriated with the way things are being handled on the school side of things.......boards/visiting clerkships/the fact we pay close to 30K for reasons that have yet to satisfy my curiosity. I will say this though....if you're feeling down....just search the internet for midget and all your sorrows go away. Well that sums up the past year approximately......long live ditka.

What's up everyone? I'm going to be a 1st year next Fall, and I was just in Des Moines this past weekend. I became pretty interested in the apartments at Timberland Pointe. I wanted to see if anyone on here could tell me any good or bad information about those apartments. Any information would be greatly appreciated. They do have high speed internet capabilities there, correct?

Thanks!

I just miss the magic chest hair sprinkles. They always brought me good luck, maybe Dejan should package his chest hair as the cure for cancer, it just might work.

I figured they were unrelated and bascially did the shotgun lab approach, including some rhuematoid labs. Just thought it was kind of weird. I just set up an fp rotation in Utah. Wanted to see if the mormon thing was too overpowering. I'm also doing a couple weeks at beaumont. Apperently troy beaumont has an unnopposed fp residency. Could be cool. Now that I picked my field im trying to narrow down residency slots. Right now Im looking at two in MI, one in Utah, a couple in CO, and one in kentucky right next to Cincinatti. Kind of all over the place. Anyone else decide what they want to do yet? I hear steph and Dan are going FP, Jane RADS, Cliff Neuro surg, Erica wants endocrine and I think Kats pretty decided on IM. Can't wait to start getting PAID!!!!

No kidding! Time to get out of negative income and on the long road of debt repayment.

Yup, still considering rads here. Tied for #2 are IM and gen surg. #3 would probably be EM or anesthesiology. I think I'd be happy in any of those at this point. I just like everything!

Does anyone have any information on the Park Avenue or Windsor Square apartments?? Such as how much do utilities end up costing a month in the Winter and Summer? I'd love any information that anyone could please give me.

And It'sElectric: I don't know anyone who posts on this list who lived in either of those two buildings. I lived in the Imperial.
