how did you get your eras token, is dmu going to email it to us?

I got it via Email....It might be earlier than average because I'm a military candidate and have to suck **** through a straw.

Just Kidding. We get to use spoons.

ERAS is going to take over my life. It wants to know every shcool I've been to (somewhere around 8 in my Active Duty career) and every job I've ever had (Kyrie Eleison, Kyrie Eleison, Christie Eleison).

You may be wondering, "Why is Ray posting on the 4th of July?" Fact is, I was planning on heading back to the ranch, about now, but all of the cats and dogs in heaven have started pouring out of the sky at one time. I think dry and studying is a better idea.

I'll be a first year at DMU this Fall, and I just had a quick question regarding scooters. A good friend of mine is actually giving me a 2 year old scooter for free to take with me next year, since gas prices are such a bitch and it would save me a bundle.

I was just curious if anyone you know (or you yourself) used one while living in Des Moines? Can I drive it on Fleur Drive without being pulled over? Any other information would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

Ive seen people drive with em on Fleur and on Grand. Im guessing you got a apartment on Fleur. Granted, I made fun of them each and every time.

Actually, I'm living on Park Avenue, but obviously I'd have to hit up Fleur for a part of the drive. And trust me, I made fun of them in the past, and I even continue to make fun of them now.

There's just something about 90-100 mpg that I can't resist. I won't ride it proud, but I'll ride it all the same.

they emailed me my eras token, but now my question is why won't it let me pick programs to apply too, or can we only choose them starting July 15th for AOA and later for aCGME? How do we get our letters of rec on there? Anyone who has figured that **** out please let me know.

I dont want to fill out the stupid application!!!! Can't I just show up, look at a program and go "yup....I find this place accepctable... you'll be glad to know that I have decided to spend the the next 5 years of my life here."

Guess who's orders just got approved to go to San Diego for a month...

DocG,

then they would say, just bend over and we will see if you make a good surgery candidate...

I only have gathered 2 LORs so far and am starting to panic. I should have asked for more but got lazy. Hopefully I can garner some more with this rotation... How many do you guys think is enough?

I had questions about ERAS and LOR so I stopped by the registrars office. This is what they told me.

1) You enter the name of the letter writter on ERAS and subit your application, when your app is subitted, ERAS sends a request to DMU. Then DMU scans the LOR and send them to ERAS, who then sends the to the programs you specified. To me, its sounds like they show up sperate from your application, but I could be wrong

2) I asked her to see my LOR and she just made copies and gave them to me. I was kinda pissed since one of the people I asked to write one, didn't. Biatch.

Hope this helps

What you could always do is call your previous attendings and ask for one retroactivily. I know this isn't ideal, but Im pretty sure you need three LOR for most programs. The only this about asking someone on say, this roation, is if it takes them four weeks to get it done and mailed in to DMU. If you want to sumbit on Sept 1 (or July 15 depending on what your applying to), is a time crunch.

I think 4 LOR is a good number, that way you can throw one out.

I've already bent over, right after I got off my knees.....

I've got to get some LORs. I've had people willing to write them...but I havet put my CV together yet...... :scared: :scared: :scared:

How long does it take to write, "A$$ Kissing wanna-be cutter with no real talent" on a piece of toilet paper in green crayon?

JK

I know you aren't that big an a$$ kisser.

Does anyone know HOW or WHEN we can actually submit our interest in DO programs on the ERAS website. maybe i'm missing something, but everything on there at this point has been MD hospitals. Balls Deep Frenchie.

Here is a treat for anyone who is interested.

umm...how do we sign up for that rotation?

30 programs picked out so far...have been told that other people going for rads are applying to at least that, some into the 50's and beyond...crazy...

UNMC is a great place and Omaha is pretty neat. Much more diverse than Des Moines, lots of great restaurants, and the hospital is huge with a brand new ER and surgery floor. I'm doing a month of neurology...lots of zebras here!

Ok guys I'm gonna give you some advice take it or leave it, it's up to you. I'm currently a surgery intern having just graduated from good ol DMU. Sorry DocGeorge ERAS is a pain in the #ss and there's no way of getting around it, it sucks I feel your pain. Next make sure when your getting a doc to write you a letter you have them mail the school a copy, AS WELL AS YOURSELF!!!! I read previously that someone had a doc not write them a letter...DMU will lose some of the LOR's I had to send them 3 of my copies, so contact the doc, he/she may have written a letter and they may have lost it. If you're applying to a competitive specialty, apply broadly especially if you're also applying MD, it will be expensive, but this is the rest of your career you are talking about....I applied both and interviewed both in General Surgery. Feel free to message me with questions, not sure now long it might take to reply back but I will. Hope this helps.

Lucky ~

I agree with you: Omaha is an awesome city, much better than des moines and comparable to chicago in a funny way. I don't try to say they have as much as chicago regarding things to do, but I seem equally entertained in the two places and find omaha's downtown is much more accessible. Furthermore, big cities are only a cheap plane ride away.

Who's applying for AOA internships?

Astro - you are totally right about the cheap plane tickets out of Omaha. I flew to SF once from here for $158 roundtrip.

EMT_DO - where did you end up matching, if you don't mind telling?

Not me, but I plan on trying to get my ACGME one approved by resolution 42... gotta keep those osteopathic fellowships an option to me later

So, can you be boarded in the fellowship specialty if you do an ACGME residency and an AOA fellowship? Does it matter? Because I think for ACGME fellowships, you can only be boarded if you do an ACGME residency. Just curious!

I'm apply AOA traditional since that is what all the NS programs are under. I may apply gen surgery too, but I haven't thought that far a head yet.......

I'm applying to the osteo ER programs. Trying to get the ERAS stuff going. You know what I hate, when your attending agrees to write a letter for you and never does it. I understand delays, but saying you will do it and then not doing it...RAAWWRR!!! Hey J-ho, You and D, should come to D-town for residency, There is a ton of lakes up here with Bass, pike, walleye, crappie, perch, and I think theres some hospitals too. I put a new motor on the boat, WHOOOOOO, that thing is sweet! I've been on the lakes quite a bit since I got that going. This spring I pulled in a two pound, three pound and 5.5 pound largemouth all in one day. Come to the D-side.

ER huh?? Dude, that is so totally you! I thought you'd never choose, but I think you'd be good an all the fields you were considering.

We pretty much ruled out Michigan. Just cuz I might want to do a fellowship and the ones I'm looking at are all ACGME accredited. So it would make more sense to do an allo residency. If Michigan wasn't one of those 5 states, maybe. We're going up to D-town for E's wedding! Don't you miss out on this one, Dartos! We want to see you all!

Cremaster, good luck with everything! I heard you were going all over the country for rotations at the NS places you want to go. How fun! I went to this conference held by the neurosurgeons this morning, and I can totally see you doing that stuff. Nerd. 😀

Yeah, and I talked to a couple of AOA fellowship directors, and the ACOI to verify. You can do a ACGME residency, then get your internship approved by res 42. You are then eligible to get your residency approved by the AOA if you jump through some hoops. Basically all you have to do is pay AOA dues for the three years, do some OMT CME and fill out some paperwork. As a resident dues are almost free. Then, you take the AOA specialty boards. For me, the ACOI boards. Then Im eligable to do AOA fellowships. I know im going to do all of this work and end up doing hospitalist medicine anyway.

From the fellowship directors Ive talked to, most of their fellows are ACGME trained. It has just been their impression (rough) that the ACGME trained internist are more qualified for the spot.

Overall, you will be boarded by the ACP, ACOI (both-since you took both boards) and then the ACOI specialty boards.

From the way I understand it though, if you want to do a ACGME fellowship, you must do a ACGME residency

Thanks for the info!

I think I'd like to remain involved with the AOA even if I do an ACGME residency, because that's the only way to get some things changed that I feel need to be changed. Who knows...most residents are too busy to deal with the politics anyway. Definitely some food for thought though.

We're definitely going to Ericas wedding. Then we're going to florida the next day. Taking Brady to Disney world. 🙂 What fellowships are you thinking, pediatric gynecologic uretheral interventional radiology? Cuz thats what I would do. Has D mak decided what hes going into? Besides your various orifices of course. I could totally see him doing ID, or DUI, either way its all good. I'm on st. Joes psych rotation now 😴 literally right now.

Actually, I was thinking I'd focus on neonatal colovesicular fistula repair via ultrasound during an interventional fellowship 😛

The Mr. is thinking of FP now, because he's decided that he really prefers a clinic or urgent care setting as opposed to a hospital-based practice. And FP would be more practical for that. It has always been a choice between FP and IM for him. He's on an ID rotation now, and sort of likes it, but doesn't know if he would go on to do a fellowhip in that if he did an IM residency.

Where are you applying for ER?

Yes Lucky I'm in Columbus downtown now and they have trauma like every 5 minutes. I have 3.5 more weeks here then I take two weeks off to get step 2 done, and then I go to IL to do my last month at Bromenn. I really like NS. Sometimes the hours suck, but the cases are awesome and I like the critical care neuro patients. I also started dating a chick in MI, and we are pretty serious so I'm hoping htat I get the spot there. Keep it real homies.

It's hard for me to listen to all you civilians and all your opportunities.

I've already filled out my six choices for the military match, and now I need to finish my damned ERAS.

I think I told lucky about 9 bajillion times what my rankings were. If you don't know, they go something like this....

Old McDonald had a Raj, E I E I O.
And on that Raj she had a kid, E I E I O
With a Wah Wah here, and a Wah Wah there, Here a Wah there a Wah everywhere a Wah Wah.....

I think I like hospice medicine a lot...I start my Peds Hem/Onc rotation in 3 weeks...WOO

There's no new info.

a little interspecies erotica to start my day........go see clerks 2......good stuff. Hi everybody.......hope everybody's doing well. I've been fighting strange and exotic diseases in Omaha....damn those Sudanese. Good luck with upcoming boards/apps. See some of you in Detroit soon.....my plan is going ahead with mucho fruition. NACHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Any body got any hints on how to study for peds. Ive been disapointed in the blueprints book so far. Ive heard the test isn't to bad, but I still want to be ready

Clerks II rocked. Thank goodness pillowpants doens't allways live 21 years.

I need to see Clerks II whenever I'm not so tired I can hardly keep my eyes open. Good luck to everyone as well who may be taking boards soon, the countdown is less than a month for myself. I too will be in the D starting the last week of September, hopefully for good so if ya'll are up there look me up!

Agree - Clerks II is an excellent movie, combing all the essential elements (homosexuality, beastiality, comedy, and lowering the bar to a point not even I would do in public) required to make a great movie.

Saturday night a 30 y/o nurse in mt clemens unbottoned her jean skirt to reveal rainbow colored panties and then went one step further to prove she has a beardless clam. Some nights are better than others i guess.

Clerks II was awesome...Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings conversation was absolutely hilarious.

40 DAYS TILL HAWKEYE KICKOFF!!!

I was actually the one who got Becky preggo...from the toilet seat...except I was thinking about GregG while I was "working."

They even had me dancing at the urinal during the Jackson-5 song.

You - that milato girl is pretty damn cute in Clerks II. I could see myself hitting on a girl like that, only to get shot down in the immediate future. less than a year from now we will be drinking like fish and celebrating the end to 4 miserable years (well, 2 miserable years and 2 years of working and paying for it....literally).

If I ever have free time again I will go see clerks II.................Astro I flick off the shoe everyday on my way home from work. F**K Bucky and his smug ass smile........I blame all crime on campus somehow being related to Ted Ginn Jr. and ask if we shouldn't call the cops on him everytime something happens, my attending laughs.

boards and wards pocket book along with First Aid for step 2. No problem.

sometimes I think about the days when sleeping in used to be an option........

Took COMLEX-2 yesterday guys....I have to say that for everything but the OMM I was very satisfied with my prep material. USMLEWORLD, and the "Pre-Test" series were quite valuable. The Kaplan Q-book (I only did 2 Peds and 2 OB/GYN q sets) was low yield after doing the USMLEWORLD and Pre-Test books.

I used UptoDate.com a lot to double check stuff I read while studying:

1) To verify a case of gout, you have to stick a needle in the joint. (I'm sure the patient will come back after that procedure)
2) Bruton's Agammaglobulinemia is named wrong...it's all the damned Ig's are low. (Bruton is a *****)
3) There's lots of other stuff, but I'm too hungover to remember them all. Here's my dummy list (be forewarned that I printed this and re-researched these notes...notably the 9.5 billion types of nephropathy with SLE DUMMY .

THE COMLEX-2:
I wasn't surprised by too much I saw on the test. There were a few law and ethics questions (but that stuff is all over the USMLEWORLD). The OMM was 50% understandable and 50% WTF? I had quite a bit of cranial. The first half of each section was single questions, the second section was sets. Most sets were 2-3, some were 5.

By the end of the day I was wore out. OMFG, the day was just long.

Celebrating at the Cheetah Lounge in Atlanta was a good idea in concept, but that place was EXPENSIVE. I'm not that upscale anyway....I suggest going to a smaller place where the girls aren't fashion models (these girls were), but it won't cost 9.5 million to get drinks and stuff.

I hope boards went well for you Portier. I take them in about a month, and I haven't been studying as much lately as i was. Bake a pie, eat a pie I guess.

Is that an Iowa version of Forrest Gump logic?

I can imagine your mom telling you stuff like that.

My dad would have said (no joke here), "If you want to play the game, Ray, you have to pay the price."

Of course he always liked to yell, "HORSE$HIT!" too. It was kind of paroxysmal like a sneeze. If you've spent any amount of time around me, you'e probably heard me do my version of it.

Silly Story: A stripper at the Cheetah came over to me in the restaurant (the Filet was SUPERB), and chatted. I don't remember what we talked about, but I remember it was sort of unbelievable to me. I remember saying, "HORSE$HIT!" like my dad does, and she winced like I'd taken a swing at her. She'd done this once or twice as I swore in the conversation.

Now here's my quandary: A girl from Jersey who lives in Atlanta taking her clothes off for strangers for a living, who approaches you while you're eating to ask about selling you stuff that's right next door to sex gets offended when you say "HORSE$HIT!" I was slightly confused at this juxtaposition of morality and immorality.

Once in a while over the past three+ years, I've persused this site, mainly when in need of some giggles. (I can't deny it: I appreciate the humor.) I haven't felt compelled to post, but happened upon this little rhyme...

I'm pleased to report there are no babies in the near future, but I'm certain if it does happen, the first place I'll announce will be here on SDN. We're pretty happy, even if his parents aren't. 😀

Congrats on the COMLEX.

Can you tell me a bit more about this scooter? What is the engine's displacement, top speed, etc? I ride my motorcycle all around Des Moines without trouble. As long as you avoid Buick driving widows, you'll do fine.

Board related question for you guys:

For Step I, what are the better books to use? I have First Aid for USMLE but was wondering about the difference between BRS vs. High Yield books. I am not trying to be a gunner or anything, but since I have some money now, I was thinking about buying them now. Thanks all.
