DO 2022 match thread?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It does look like a good year for DOs. Having said that one thing that I’ve seen that’s a negative (and a direct result of school expansion) is that while the match rate overall is excellent, the match rates into anything surgical have continuously gone down and this year were absolutely brutal. As more applicants enter the pool the match rates into even general surgery are approaching a coin flip.

The point being, everyone applying anything even remotely competitive needs to have a back up plan ready in case they don’t match.

For full disclosure, we at TCOM had 22 applicants to psychiatry this year. Only 9 made it. JPS, our home program, took none of us.

I'm headed into Internal Med at a university program at an urban, very scenic location close to the west coast, so I can't complain... but it is a bit bittersweet that I didn't make it into my preferred specialty.
That's weird since the number of applicants to psych was down this year....

This is all the residency matches I could get from my classmates' social media pages and the match day video. So this is not a complete list, and considering my school did not post their match list from last year, this may be all we'll ever get.

I will update this post if I find more.

General Surgery at Temple!!! I don't think Temple has ever taken a DO before. HUGE match. Would love to hear how she did it.

Would love to hear your insights as to how students can best prepare to mitigate against this, especially with Step 1 going P/F.

I don’t think that has anything to do with being DO. The graduating class of 2022 was struck with COVID during spring semester of second year, right before Step 1 and Level 1. This may have affected board performance. But more importantly, most DO students in class of 2022 had their rotations online and had difficulty finding SUBI’s in the beginning of 4th year. Not to mention the lack of research opportunities in 3rd year. MD schools have more resources at hand, so their students who matched surgery would perhaps be more likely to weather the circumstances under COVID.

The importance of Step 1 will be replaced by Step 2CK. About a billion program directors have confirmed this. And I think that the program directors who have not confirmed this were steering away from focusing on board scores anyway.

They have a pgy4 DO and graduated one in 2016.

Build connections. Crush Step 2. High class rank. Publish. Make sure your app on paper looks like an MD students app.

The above things a you mention are directly linked to being a DO…. Even still, while DOs have made serious inroads in recent years in surgery, there is still a healthy amount of bias.

Congrats to everyone who matched.

Anecdotally, it seems like the rads match rate has been more or less stable over the last couple years. But the quality seems to be pushing down a bit. My prospects last year were not nearly what people told me they would be. And this year people even more competitive than me seemed to end up with more limited options.

I feel that it’s quickly going from “Hope I match a solid university program” to “Am I going to match?!” for the average DO rads applicant.

Still some great matches here and there. But I’m not sure it’s going to be a field of good scores + chill interview= G2G much longer.

Didn't a DO match Mayo-ortho? Also, UPenn has a DO in their ENT program, currently a PGY-4. Let's agree they are all tied for best DO surgery matches 👍
I’m a general surgery resident. I’m specifically talking about general surgery.

Do you think the previous notion that research and aways aren't necessary for Rads (especially for DOs) no longer applies?

Also, is what you're saying pretty much the same case for matching anesthesia or is that still more open for DOs?

Thanks!
I think it’s trending that way. I think aways are always going to be of low utility for DR. I’m operating from a low sample size fwiw. But I feel like I’m going nuts seeing DOs with 260+ step 1 ending up at community programs or so-so university programs. Kinda wild. I’m hoping I’m wrong.

I know nothing about anesthesia. Heard it’s it’s getting crazy though.

I feel like I keep on hearing specialties getting harder: anesthesia, DR, surgery, psych. So then what's getting easier? Something has to right? The only one I am aware of is EM.
EM, Rad Onc, FM, community IM, community peds.

But everything is increasing slightly because of the increases of new medical school graduates every year.

Have path, FM, community IM and peds actually getting easier. I didn't think they were ever very competitive. Are they becoming even less competitive?

I've been feeling super depressed since Friday and I'm only a 3rd year.

Preliminary surgery here I come.
It can't be that bad, right? The number of DO categorial surgical placements have roughly quadrupled from 56 in 2017 to 212 this year while the prelim match # has only doubled from 28 to 56 since.

Really? According to this it increased:

In 2022, 1,437 MD seniors applied and 494 DO seniors applied.

In 2021, 1,415 MD seniors applied and 484 DO seniors applied:

So it’s about the same if not a bit more this year. There were new some new programs that opened this year but that was also true for a number of specialities.

I would say based on the stats Psych competitiveness is about the same as last year, which is more competitive than say, 5 and def 10 years ago.

Remember that the merger happened, so the DO spots are now included in that number and weren’t previously.

And the number of applicants keeps increasing. ~400 DOs applied this year. Match rate was almost 55%. Even if that includes people who dual applied and used GS as a back up the match rate to GS is ~60%. Charting outcomes will show us the exact numbers and break things down into score bins.

Damn how many of the 260s that you knew matched at least.

Psych is getting crazy competitive
Yeah, interest is high too, take one state MD school in NY for example, they matched 17 people into psych this year, last year matched 23, which was an all time high for them. Interest is definitely there and peeps are excited about psych and are applying.

Most fields are becoming more competitive. Including these. Excluding EM and rad onc

It's an increase of 12 US applicants. In context, the total number of psych positions increased from 1,907 to 2,047 or by 140.
So you have 12 more US applicants with 140 additional positions. It looks like it's less competitive than last year. Plus overall applicants are down by ~400 this year although most of those were from IMGs.

This was the data I was using... no clue how only 9/22 people matched though, that seems like a huge anamoly..

This is not true. Applications were up, albeit minimally, relative to last year.

From data this year:
387 DO Seniors matched to Psychiatry out of 494 applicants, translating to a 78.3% match rate to PGY1 positions.
1,253 MD Seniors matched to the field out of 1437 applicants, translating to an 87.1% match rate to PGY1 positions.

Is psych one of those specialties along with pm&r and FM that highly value fit and evidence of commitment to the field? From what I’ve seen, I don’t think psych cares about board scores the way other specialities do. I see lots of people with good board scores who don’t match.

Here is RVU.

I wasn't going to post this because there are names on it, but it looks like its public.
University of New Mexico Psychiatry match from RVU. That program has 2% DOs. Great match.

This has to be placement rate. We need to standardize "match" versus "placement". Schools try to hide behind "100% match" when really there is a 20% SOAP rate at that school.

I’m repeating what the school told us, so I would have no idea. They haven’t published anything official yet.
