The adcom would have to be friends with your friends to even see the pictures.

I wish I knew where I saw this - it was months ago and my memory is no where near that good - but it's not supposed to be that hard to bypass the security features. I don't think an adcom would do that, but it would not be that hard for an interviewer to do it before the interview.

I attended an interview workshop, and the assistant dean of admissions of this certain school said, and I quote, "I googled, facebooked, and myspaced every student's file that came across my desk last year."

I know of committees that hire students to hack through privacy settings, and I know of a certain committee who has their own facebook and myspace accounts.

Anything on the net of you is fair game, sorry.

 all 5000 of them, huh? yeah, right. Even if it only took five minutes each, that would be 10 weeks.

probably just the candidates being interviewed....

I personally had a student interviewer at a California school tell me that he googled me, and read my myspace profile. He said he liked my car, and thought my license plate was funny (note: i have a customized license plate, and lots of pics of my car on my profile.)

i ended up getting it to the school. But the point is, people do google you and if they know how to get around privacy settings, they will probably look up your facebook account. However, I don't think you should delete your accounts. People like to see students in normal settings, having fun. I would however, get rid of pictures of you doing stupid stuff (e.g. making out with 3 girls at once, etc.)

If a dean has enough time to do this than do not attend that school. They have serious directive problems if they pay a dean just to google 20,000 names all day. If he really said that he was just pulling you around.

I am sure this is just a rumor. For one, you don't need to hire anybody to hack a profile, if they hired someone just to do this don't go there either because they don't know how to spend money very wisely. Do a google search and you will find 1000 hits for online programs and url codes that do it for you instantly.

I do agree with this, though. And I am sure adcom members check sometimes. But not to the magnitude that you imply.
