I am planning to take couple courses that are known as GPA-booster courses in my school. But I am afraid that dental adcoms might frown on them if I get really high marks in those courses. Do dental adcoms check the difficultly level of the courses I took at all?

Hey smooth - I think it depends...if you have completed your science pre-requs and you need to boost your overall GPA, I don't think it matters what courses you take. However, if it's your science GPA, I don't know if they will count a first year astromony course as a science class  . Where are you studying and what are the name of your courses? Maybe I've heard of them and can give you a better answer. 🙂

Keep in mind these adcom members are going through hundreds, even thousands, of applications. Investigating the difficulty of each applicant's individual courses isn't exactly something they have time for. Just get your prerequisites, and work on your GPA however you're best able. Good luck.

I agree, boost your GPA as much as possible.

I go to UBC which is a Canadian univeristy. I am planning to take
EOSC (Earth and Ocean Science) course on natural disaeaster. It's a first yr level course.

Hey smooth-
I think that should be fine, as long as it's to boost your overall GPA. It won't be counted towards your science GPA. I once took intro to astronomy....so easy, got a great mark 🙂 Did you apply to any Canadian schools yet?

Bump that score up any way you know how. Be careful though, I thought I was taking GPA boosters as well until I got my arse handed to me with C's from these "easy" classes. Haha. Total bust.

I think most instate schools can catch instate students taking pre reqs that are gpa boosters.

just a thought

thats funny..i also did a course called EPSC 250 Natural Disasters at McGill university. why wouldn't it count in the science GPA tho? It falls under one of aadsas' * (science course) classifications.

true. it's important to raise up your gpa, but i think there's a way for them to figure out if certain classes you're taking are the gpa boosters. ie. honors classes are distinguished as H. just a thought..

I am taking the natural disaster course as self-interest. It just happens to be a GPA booster in my Canadian univeristy. No, I havn't applied for Canadian schools. I am just going into 2 nd yr science.

Can someone tell me what 'adcoms' is? And why is it deciding if I get into dental school.

"adcom" is short for "admissions committee"
