Weird title, but I couldn't find a better way to word what I want to ask.

I'm starting a volunteering thing at a ESL type center associated with my university. I'll be paired up with a student my age and the point is to get to know them, be friends with them, help them improve their English, etc.

How should I/would I log hours for this? I mean, it just sounds wrong to put down hours for hanging out with a friend...not sure how the ESL center would log this stuff either if they do at all.

I'm thinking I'd just put it down as a volunteer activity that ranged from so and so month to so and so month/year...but do the applications all want hours on every EC?

Thanks!

Technically you do have to enter hours for everything as far as I know - but it seems pretty lenient. Like, I received a scholarship award that didn't have an application (IE I spent no time on it), so I put 1 hour on my AMCAS (couldn't do 0) and I think they understood what I meant. If you're spending time with an ELL student and helping them with their language studies, it sounds like you should be able to claim hours. Volunteering can be fun/relaxed and still count as service too!

The number of hours you put in your AMCAS is much less important than the content you write underneath each experience. Putting down 1 is fine if you talk about your experience and why it was meaningful.
