Does anyone know any schools that are particularly friendly to Canadian applicants? Are their any schools that allow international students to apply but are really quite tough to gain admission in?

Im also Canadian and applying this summer. There is 19 schools that accept Canadian applications, 13 of them will accept you with a C- in any of the pre-reqs. Only 6 of them require a C or higher. That being said, im assuming one C- is fine if your other grades make up for it.

I have heard mixed things about it being hard for Canadians. I think the process itself is more annoying than actually getting in. What school do u go to? I go to UBC, which doesnt use a 4.0 transcript so I have to send my transcript to some US education institution to translate it, which is a waste of money and time personally cuz they should just go "A 4.0 etc"

As a Canadian I will be applying to UNE, Western, LECOM-E and Lecom B, DMU, Touro-NY, PCSOM, PCOM, GA-PCOM, KCOM, LMU. All have been known to accept Canadians.

Our grades do have to higher generally but not by much. Its not like u need a 4.0

Several Canadians PM me on here saying they got in with like 3.2-3.3 gpas and around 27-30 MCATs

Keep in mind some of these schools appreciate how hard our education system is compared to US undergrad (not to offend anyone).

Your biggest problem as a Canadian : GETTING a DO REFERENCE LETTER

Add AZCOM to the list. One of the 2nd years who answered questions at my interview was from Toronto.
 
What about residency back in Canada. Is it easier or harder as a US DO compared to carrib/Ireland/Australia? Can Canadians even get the DO residencies, as opposed to just having to go for the ACGME ones? How many residents are in Canada that have done a DO from the states? I just know of 2 in Ontario but are their any others? Are their any DO specialists in Canada?

Check out the canadian osteopathic association website. I think BC allows DO to apply for residency spot alongside with canadian medical graduates, while places like ontario will be push into the 2nd round alongside with IMG/FMGs (from carib/ireland/aussie).

Why can't canadian get into DO residencies? i'm not so sure about this question. If you've made into DO school took the COMLEX, why can't you? Its just that if you want to come back to canada to work, many provinces may only recognize ACGME residency training.

As far as # of DOs in canada, I can't say, let along specialists. Maybe others can help fill in this question.
 
I contacted the president of the BC Osteopath blah blah and he said there is only 3 practicing in BC. However, those are DO who went to a 4 year DO US med school. Keep in mind that trends are changing. Also, for all i know he could have meant people who did AOA residency.

I am shadowing him in 3 weeks, I can ask him more then and update🙂

I think when you heard about Canadians cant get into DO residency, maybe you heard of a VISA problem. I know you have to be careful when choosing H1B or J1

I would just like to correct that bolded statement. DOs are part of the CMG stream in Ontario
CMG - canadian med grads, us med grads who are canadian residents, DO grads

IMG - offshore school grads

So in theory for DOs the possibility of matching into round 1 at least in Ontario and BC is way higher than IMG's. In the second round CMG and IMG's all compete for the remaining spots. Again, if you are part of the CMG you will have a better shot that IMG. For me these are good enough reasons to try and get into DO than any other offshore schools. Also, DO schools rock way more :meanie: and I can't wait to get into one 😀


For the coming back part, antapolar nailed it. If you want to come back and practice in canada, do a ACGME or the dual-accredited residencies. AOA residency will give you recognition problems in some provinces....like Ontario, PEI, limited license in BC

PS: I am not trying to knock on any offshore schools. There are some really good ones in Ireland and Ozz land. This is strictly my opinion and whatever i posted is from the carms website.

The weirdest part is that this isn't the first time a troll has made an account just to flame me personally. However, this one gets an A+ for effort. The name, the avatar, the status, etc ... it's too bad I already figured out who it is, and they will be banned so quickly.

Why me??? I mean you clearly put some effort into this, and you were obviously irritated when I got you banned for posting in Osteo a few weeks back (you specifically asked about my undergrad), but is there more to it? Did I kill your father? Are you avenging someone's honor? Did a DO give you a wedgie??
