So I have heard different things about the timing of DO and MD school applications.

Is it true that the DO application opens in April and you can submit in May? And then MD is open in May and submit in June (actually I already know this is true for sure)?

Does anyone have experience with both so as to also add information on the timing of interviews and stuff?

Lets say I submit both DO and MD applications at the beginning of their respective times; what happens if you start getting acceptances in the fall from DO schools but then are waiting to hear from MD schools much later (if you are a average/below average applicant for allopathic).

I guess what I am getting at is, lets say I get into a DO school that I really like; there are some great schools on my list that hopefully I have a real shot at if I am lucky. It will be quite a tight crunch on deciding whether or not I could drop $2000 or whatever for those hefty DO deposits... I mean realistically I would only be able to put down one DO deposit. So is there any way these two application cycles overlap or is it likely I will be done the DO cycle (application, secondaries, interviews etc.) much earlier than MD?

It would be great if I was to maybe hear from the MD schools around the same time, that way I would not have to drop a huge DO deposit, only to hear from an MD school that I like two weeks later. However, I am aware that I am probably a better candidate for DO schools than MD so likely I will hear from DO much earlier than MD (MD will probably drag me to the end of the season, at which point after dropping that huge DO deposit and falling in love with the DO school I pick, I would be unlikely to accept the MD).

Wow that was a ramble, sorry. Anyone with some experience in this?

***Just a by the way, this was not meant to be a pretentious ramble at all, all of it is absolutely hypothetical so as to figure out the general schedule of things. I in know way assume that I will have acceptances thrown at me from the left and right haha.... assuming makes an @ss out of u and me. So all hypothetical here for question of timing sake.

Too many variables. You could hear back from an MD school before DO schools or you could not hear back from them at all. Also, some schools don't do rolling admissions so you wouldn't know until next year if you are accepted or not, so you would inevitably have to put down a DO deposit. No matter how you apply, DO only/MD only/MD and DO, you're going to run into decisions with deposits unless you are lucky enough to get accepted to your number one before the deadline.

This is hilarious how much it seriously seems like the lottery. Like for as much effort and planning someone puts into it, I am in awe of the amount of just plain luck that goes into this whole thing.

That is so hard, I guess I will have to figure out a better money situation, because it is going to be crazy tight...

I had no idea how much of a lottery it would be until I was knee deep in it. I received II's to all schools I applied to (minus 2 I have yet to hear from) except for my two "safety's" I was rejected post secondary. With so many applicants with such similar stats you just don't know what will happen.

No and no. It's June for both. Where do you hear these things???

Is it true that the DO application opens in April and you can submit in May? And then MD is open in May and submit in June (actually I already know this is true for sure)?

As for the rest of your post, a bird in the hand....

So open may and submit June? for both...

haha I had to look this up, wise... I tried to attach a funny picture relating to this, but dangit I cannot figure out how to have a picture in the text, like not just an attachment

it is a lottery. I got accepted to the first school I interviewed at (lecom) and the deposit was due in a month, well before the date of my other scheduled interviews. I bit the bullet and paid the deposit because in the long run it's not worth the risk or the $1500 to hold off and pray I get in elsewhere

Sit down and talk with someone who REALLY knows about this stuff. There are a lot of variables in the application process. This crap is expensive. Just spend the cash when necessary. If you don't want to take a year off potentially wasting a few thousand is nothing once you start taking out loans.
