so, im unlikely to go anywhere on a medical mission. im wondering if any of the anesthesiology/critical care types around here are able to donate services to their community? it seems like red tape/hurdles would prevent you from doing most things, especially with large groups/academic centers.

My group donates free care to the needy. Ive done mission trips including to haiti after the quake. We also do a lot of anesthesia on folks that are uninsured and dont have medicare or medicaid and we dont collect on this.

It is common in my area (orlando) for some of the physicians to donate their portion of services on occasion. Their is a large free clinic in the area that has made connections with a lot of specialists to treat their referals for free and one of the hospital chains in town even "donates" the hospital/surgery room on occasion.

I provide about $100k worth of free care to patients a year secondary to them being "self pay" and never paying. I feel that is more than adequate.

same here six figures in " Free Care" annually for years.

Always give at least $8000/yr to medical research, animal rescue charities.

I could send the folks who ignore my bill to collections like the cable , telephone , and etc etc ...... co's practices. But I generally don't, and generally only if they keep my check.

Now with higher patient deductables both in and out of network my #'s are falling.

Wife got EGD across town this year , that group billed twice what I bill. $200 vs $100/u

Am I stupid ?????

Some days after toiling in the OR and meeting " Bill Self " again and again ........the supermarket checkout girl will ask if I'd like to donate $ to some charity.... I always state "I gave at the office" Most of us DO. And the public has NO CLUE..... Let them do what we do and have folks with jobs and fancier cell phones than us , not pay our bill....

You want a medical mission, just go into private practice in a setting that takes all comers. Hey a trauma and other emergencies are one thing but scooting out on the check on your scheduled surgery is another.

You asked and I spouted.... sorry all you med students, but one day you to will have to run a business.

I will mention that the libertarian inme hates the phrase "give back" as it implies something was given to the wealthy individual that put years and years of hard work in to earn their ability choose to give

Before laying a solid foundation on my kids' education funding and retirement, not so much. Now that I have, I donate heavily to charitable organizations. Hope to start going on medical missions if and when I go part time.

True. But there are plenty of smart, hard working people who don't succeed or attain wealth. Yes, I have studied hard and worked very hard and made good choices... But I recognize that I am also lucky to have lived in this country at this time and had good parents and been born with skills that are valued in the marketplace. I am thankful for my success. "Giving back" is giving thanks.

My way of "giving back" is showing to work despite all the stupidity all around me.

Hospitals are a dangerous place for patients.

We all "give back" via the 40% TAX that our incompetent government takes out of our paychecks each month.

That does't count (obviously).

 why not?

If charity is about doing good for others, we all do a lot of good via the taxes we pay. If charity is about being seen doing good for others, I guess you're right and it only counts if you're giving directly to the recipient.

So if you steal from me, I must also give you money to say I have been a benefit to you?

You're not giving to the same person who is taking the tax from you. If you're not giving to charity because of taxes it implies that you think that those who actually need and deserve help are being adequately taken care of by the government.

First, the government doesn't take care of anyone. A section of society uses the government to make the wealthy pay for the poor. Second, no one owes anything to anyone in terms of charity. Most of us have some moral/religious/cultural that tells us we should choose to be charitable. But the point of charity is that you don't owe it. I pay my taxes, not out of belief the government is or even should be "taking care of people" but because if I don't pay 30+ percent of my income, the government will show up with guns and take far more than 30+ and put me in jail. It bothers me when people who forcibly take 1/3 of my income, then imply that I owe them more. I may choose to give more but I owe no one anything.
