DO, apply to ophthalmology?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Again I want to reiterate that I understand your argument. But your reasoning as shown above is ridiculous. Step 1 has a lot of material that doesn't apply to certain fields either, and has nothing to do with the "training pathway"

Except all MDs need step 1 to be licensed and therefore step 1 is a part of the ACGME training pathway. COMLEX is not.

I am all for mandating all med students to take step 1 and DOs to take an additional OMM module that is pass or fail going forward.

This.

And I understand that completely, I am for that too. But as long as DOs have to legally take it to be licensed and all residencies are part of ACGME going forward then COMLEX is part of the ACGME training pathway now. Until the system changes (and I do agree this is what should happen and support it whole heartedly) then we have to consider it part of the training pathway. This does not mean that PDs need to take residents with just a COMLEX however, I'm just saying that until things change it is part of the pathway along with USMLE.

Everyone keeps saying that last year 20 DOs applied ACGME ophtho and 5 matched. This is incorrect. 34 applied, only 19 participated (got at least one interview) and only 5 matched. In my anecdotal experience, most all of those that applied have strong step scores (245+), research, away rotations, big time letters, and charismatic personalities. Also, last year there were only 9 AOA spots in the 5 programs remaining post merger. According to the book The Successful Match 2017, by number of applicants vs those that match, ophtho is the most difficult speciality for DOs to get into. I have never heard of any ACGME program taking comlex scores, even with a great USMLE, most DOs only get 2-3 random interview when applying to all 113 programs (cost of about $3,000).
