so I am a high school student and ill be going into my senior year next year and I Was thinking I wanted to do Pharmacy because the pay is good, the hours are FANTASTIC, and I'm respected in a hospital setting. However, I've always though of being a doctor, and the only reason I chose not to was because the hours were bad. I understand that DO's can and often do work in hospitals, and their hours are the same as MD's. My question is what part of the hospital has decent hours? Can DOs work more flexible hours easier than MDs? thanks

When you say Wiz, do you mean really smart, or like when you take a leak?

HAH!

but really man? really? i work in a mixed practice and DO's and MD's work the same crappy hours and are all averaging ~40 patients per day.

Wiz as in im really good at chemistry thats part of the reason why I was considering pharmacy.

I understand the hours are virtually the same I was just wondering if it was easier to get better hours as a DO like get your own practice how often do MDs get their own practice?

Fine. DO is the equivalent to MD in all professional respects. They're the same thing.

I understand that but why do MD's have more specilization opportunities than a DO? I know they are taught the same things with a different phiolosphy and that's all well and good but I usually see DO's having family practice and MD's in hospitals why is that?

Pharmacy = over saturated field and the hours are not good your looking at 50 hours a day regardless. However if you do a 2-4 ( 6 year pharm program) your basically out at age 24 as a pharmacist versus 30 as a doctor. However dentistry has the same benefits and much better field and they usually work like 4 days a week on average.

Anyways, DO's = MD's in all forms of practice.

Ask this guy.

Well speaking bluntly, they don't really have that much better opportunity. Like MD's only have a advantage on DO's primarily in Ortho, Opto, ENT and Derm. But those fields are hard to get into regardless.

The reality is it's a wash. The guy who's good enough to get into ortho as an MD is the same guy who's good enough to get into ortho as a DO.

Now some tool will post their MatLab derivation indicating a 1.08% difference between likelihood of getting into ortho, but the reality is: getting ortho is the same challenge for both MD and DO.

thank you I did look at health careers and I was never interested in Dentistry, Pharmacy is over saturated and that worries me but at the same time the threads say things should level out. Mostly I want to be a doctor because my family doctor (a DO) inspired me to be one, he said DO's were more likely to be family docs and have better hours. Anyway I apologize for my lack of knowledge, I'm glad you took it all so well. 👍

I heard Do's have better Bedside manner, why do you think that is?

Listen man, DO's don't have better bedside manner. MDs don't have worse hours.

Put the following words into a beaker and maybe you'll get it: they're the same thing.

Yeah, you are def. a little high schooler:lame:

I apologize. thank you for answering my question.

Now you're making me feel bad. Ignore my tone, I'm just messing with you. But the content of what I'm writing is accurate.

Best advice for you is to search around on this site like a madman. There's many years of wisdom on here that discuss the entire spectrum of concerns you'll have pursuing a career in health care. Look around and good luck.

thanks and I know I have a lot to learn but I'm glad you're so cool about everything. I will look around.

Actually I'm not surprised you might be wondering this, although it really doesn't matter if you're DO or MD. Specialty and specific position will determine the hours.

The volunteer coordinator at the hospital I volunteered at helped hook me up with a DO anesthesiologist to shadow (and before me asking if he could help me find a DO, he knew this doctor and didn't even realize he was a DO). Anyways, one day before I was leaving from volunteering, the coordinator was asking about the schools I was applying to and he said something about how the good thing about being a DO is that it seems like I would have better hours and would be able to have a better family life. I didn't want to argue so I just nodded and smiled lol 🙂

I think your doctor was saying that family doctors have better hours and that more DOs become family doctors, not that a DO family doctor would have better hours than an MD FP, but rather a DO FP will have better hours than an MD surgeon.

don't feel too bad OP. you're years ahead of most high school students and even some pre-meds.

hell, I didn't even know sdn existed till a few months before my application cycle last year.

Agreed, you're way ahead of the game. I didn't know about either SDN or DO until about a year and a half ago! I think I probably found SDN while looking up information about DO actually...

I think what everyone is trying to say is that when it comes down to it, its all on you. It wont be the fact that you are DO or MD....if you are a hard worker and match into a DO derm residency you probably would have been just as successful being an MD and matching into an MD one.

As far as bedside manner, it all comes down to the individual. If an MD has crappy bedside manner he probably would have crappy bedside manner being a DO as well.

Your successes or failures in medicine will be defined by your personality and work ethics, not the letters in behind your name.

Well thank you guys for saying that I'm prepared. I see what you're saying about DO's and MD's I guess I should have asked why family medicine doc? beside the hours, why that over, say a doc at a hospital. Thank you all for helping me decide what exactly I'm looking at doing. I have searched the forums, which i probably should have done to begin with. lol. I'm really curious though why did you all choose to be doctors besides another health profession?

Dude he's a high school chemistry baller. Don't even try to mess with his periodic table skillz. Why are you hatin' on the Wiz????

+2 to the OP for phonetically mentioning doodoo in the title

your work schedule is based on what type of doctor you are. i.e. surgeon, pcp, dermatolgist, they have nothing to do with what med school you went to

Usually 9:30 to 5, four days a week- But that's in a demanding surgical residency. I would totally go DO.👍
