i was thinkin the same thing the other day....now that we're off-topic does anyone know how to change your username? I really hate my username "UBCvan" cuz when I opened an acount 3 years ago I reallly wanted to go to UBC but never did...and so I dont know what the point of carrying UBCs name is...:idea:

haha ya i figured thats what happened, based off your name. I dont think you can change it, or else I would also change mine since its too "keener pre-med" for my liking. I would probably just use my name or something simple yet boring lol

I'm sure you can...I know this other person on KCUMB forum who has changed his name and he said it was because his name was revealing his identity or something...

the only news would be the KCUMB interview I have on Jan 19th...I think admission offices are closed for the Christmas break, so any news would be for after the break.

After reading your first sentence I was thinking "serious post". After the second sentence I burst out laughing in my hotel room as I procrastinate studying for my OChem Final tomorrow morning. Thank you for making my night:laugh:

You can apply to any residency in Ontario and most other provinces. It's just that we are competing with Canadian and US MDs so it's very difficult to secure competitive specialty.

"Please note that as of 2007....Ontario has confirmed that American Osteopathic graduates are eligible for entrance into their Family Medicine residency programs. "

Thats strange...how did that person match in patho @ UofT then in 2008?

So if we wanted to go back to Canada, we would have to do residency in the states (ACGME) and then go back to Canada after that?
 
Dont forget there is two types of medical residencies in the states: AOA (Osteopathic) and ACGME (MD ones that DOs can do). I think that Ontario thing regarding family medicine is referring to AOA residencies. I know that BC I am golden to do whatever as long as you do a ACGME and write USMLE. I might have to write the MCQQE (I think its called that) but I doubt it.

I dont even know if im coming back at this point....hmmmm

Checkout the document "Osteopathic Practice in Canada" posted under document section on COA website. I am not sure when that document was updated last but i got the information from there.

It says - "At the moment, American trained D.O.’s are eligible to apply for specialty medical residency programs in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.".

It has wealth of information regarding registration and licensing.

According to the document refereed in previous post- some provinces accept COMLEX exams including Ontario. We may not need to write MCCQE. I am not sure how accurate is this information.
 
Does anyone else feel that it's strange how on the one hand, Canada says that the DO degree is "equivalent" to the MD degree, while on the other hand, forcing us to write the MCCEE (the MCCQE qualifying exam) along with all the other IMGs? Whereas the Canadian graduates of US MD schools don't have to write the MCCEE? I wonder if enough of us write and complain about it to the MCC people, they'd finally drop that requirement in say.. 4 years time? :luck::luck:

Yes, exactly!!! Obviously, the Canadian system doesn't recognize the DO as equivalent to US MD. Maybe, that's why they only recognize ACGME residencies.

I don't think we as students can really do anything. If the American or Canadian Osteopathic Associations push forward, then it may be possible.
 
Sad day today. I arrived home expecting to find a letter in the mail from Western U with an acceptance/rejection/waitisting. However, I found out the dam border is backed up for THREE WEEKS coming into Vancouver because stupid people going overboard with buying presents online and trying to ship them up to canada, AHHHH lol

On a positive note, I got an A+ in my Organic Chemistry 2 retake🙂

What banks have you all found are good for a Professional Student Line of Credit? Any that don't require a cosigner since we're going to the US? I'm going to be talking to banks soon so I'll let you know what I find out.

I havent looked into it yet (fail on my part). Im just gonna pay the deposits and wing it this summer when I get back from Australia lol

I think 2-3 weeks normally. I know some people in Cali got their letters last week. I got screwed with the unfortunate fact that its xmas and apparently its the cool thing to buy presents off the internet, thus the border is backed up with mail. This upsets me lol
 
Within the last three days I have received 3 rejections. The most recent one VCOM CC. Their email notification says that I interviewed there which I did not. Did any of you receive same notification?

Mauve and Drc: Were you guys involved in any volunteer-ship in a medically under-served community?

Where were your other rejections? Im sorry to hear that. Im on hold at VCOM lol I gave up a long time ago there, Im not even gonna send them my updated marks.

haha ok do you mean volunteer "****"? I have no idea what a volunteer ship is😛. I went to Ecuador 3 summers ago to shadow doctors and build an orphanage. I also volunteered at a soup kitchen a few times and through other volunteer positions I helped people from under-served communities.

McGill and Cornell.... I know I know these schools are tough to get into but still....

VCOM apparently invited me for an interview: an email I never received... So I will call them once I am back.

I know it was a new word.... I just tweaked around with words (internship, other ships etc ships)... I am afraid this might be the reason why I have not yet heard from Western..... God! Hurry up Western!

I wouldnt take your Cornell rejection too bad. A good friend of mine from UBC was literally one of 3 Canadians ever accepted (or so he was told). They couldnt even figure out his Visa stuff cuz they hadnt done it in so long.

AZCOM and Western..cause Medapp got his invitations from these 2 today.
I don't see what the point of sending invitations on two different days is...they can just send all invites alltogether...maybe invites today, rejections tomorrow...but fingers crossed:xf:

hey guys

I got an interview at Touro-COM NY. no surprise there. But still no luck at westernU...I'm not liking this AT ALL!!

I think if i'm to get an interview at western, I will get it for next month? right? since I guess there is only one interview per month. what do you guys think?

haha the funny thing is u guys are gonna know who each other is right away at the interview, despite there being 100 people. The dean makes you stand up one by one and introduce your name and what school you attended to the whole audience. Jealous! I only had one canadian🙁

UBCVan: Congrats on the touro interview! When is it? Dont worry about western. Once you get in somewhere you will be a doctor no matter what. Although I REALLY REALLY want western, I will be happy if I end up attending Touro because I know I will be a doctor and the sky is the limit. The harder you try the further you go, right?!😎

You are right drc. I also didn't hear anything from Western (depressed) 🙁.

I just finished my NSU interview. I will be anxiously waiting for the next Friday.

I also received a Touro interview.. gotta see what NSU says. What day did you book UBCvan?

I have the KCUMB interview on Jan19th, so the reason why I booked Touro Feb19th was because I wanted to know if I get an acceptance from KCUMB before Touro Interview...Cuz priority goes to KCUMB over Touro..

UBCVan, VPP: ++ to what's been said. Touro is one of the newer schools but that doesn't mean it's a bad school. We talked in the thread about how someone from NSU got a patho residency at UofT. So anything is possible, once you get in.

VPP: i think you have an acceptance at DMU? i'm on hold there so we don't know how this process works. and i've yet to hear back from NSU 🙁 when were you complete at NSU? when did they contact you re: interview?
you have multiple interviews and an acceptance (?) so don't fret Western so much.
 
Now that we are all talking about DO schools, what do you guys think of Carib schools, more specifically SGU? would you go there over DO? Is the MD important to you?

I initially only applied to SGU and got an acceptance but then I improved my MCAT drastically and applied DO. when I got an acceptance from SGU, I had no feeling, no butterflies what so ever. But the thought of going to the US to receive medical education (DO) is just mind blowing for me and I constantly get butterflies...

Getting high quality medical education from US is a big deal for me...people all around the world wish they were in our shoes..

what about you?

It is not stressful to introduce yourself trust me! DMU was the same except the group was smaller.

I do have an acceptance at DMU. I was complete on Oct 26th and they came calling on Dec 6th I think.

I shouldn't fret! You are right! But I think the school will fit me best (along with NSU and CCOM), so its a matter of how much money I am spending right now-- which I seriously don't want to given that I am going through a financial crisis.

While I write this, I just received an interview invite from Western 🙂

I will prefer a safer future! DO is much safer than getting an MD from Carib school. Frankly speaking I will never be able to live with the stigma of having to go to a non-North American school. MD=DO hands down. I will say DO is much more may be. I have visited 2 schools in States already, and I think they are very very good! Mannequins, faculty and everything. They are much better than schools in Caribbean for sure. So Caribbean is an unacceptable alternative for me.

Just got called by my parents! I am being extra optimistic-- I don't know if my parents heard the message clearly. They don't call when they reject you right?😕
