DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratz every1 for acceptances and more interview invites. We are doing great!!

UBC: I am sure Kansas city is not as bad as it sounds on this thread. It's great school too- see u there. check PM.

I just replied to you...I actually just realized that if we get into gang related trouble we can back each other

so how was Western interview?? you can ignore my pm.

I don't know why I have to be the first poster of every single new page!!

Haha, we will be fine. team Canada!!!!!
Western interview was good. It was very chilled. I really liked the school and program and everything.

Also, AZCOM interview was pretty relaxed too. It's a good school too- if you can get an earlier date- try for it. The campus, facilities and town was nice.

hmmm definitely... Don't take that to imply that you shouldn't do good on that interview 🙂 Do Awesome!

By the way UBC I forgot to add regarding AZCOM. One of the AZCOM student told us (the interviewing bunch on Jan 13th) that only 104 students have been officially accepted into the 250 class.... given that there were only 10-12 students on my interview day, I am sure there will be a lots of spots by the time you interview there... so buckle up for that interview, and try booking earliest day possible, even if that means missing a class/test.

haha thanks I will!!

about AZCOM...I've been checking the available dates everyday and no luck yet...im booked for Feb 23 for now...

the 300K requirment has made a bad impact on me...even though s/he said you can deposit the money, get confirmed, and then return it, still it's a big deal..I don't know..maybe it's because I haven't dealt with 300K before??

ALSO why is not even half of the class filled? people don't wanna go there? reject acceptances? cuz apparently it's a good school.

Keep checking everyday- I am sure something will open in early Feb.

About 300k- it's snapshot- they just want to see that you can get arrange all the money you need for 4 years before issuing your visa. It's not like DMU.

Regarding the class size, they did not interview any1 in Nov and Dec so did not interview as many as other schools. they wanted to look at late applicants too. It's smart thing- they waited for every1 who interviewed early and once they got back to them by Dec 15 sent out more invites- they have good idea about how many more people to interview. There is still tons of spot but remember they interview about 20 people/day and they have like 10 interview(probably more) in jan and Feb.

I dont know thats true about AZCOM not interviewing in Nov or Dec. A girl from Toronto who I interviewed with at western, said she was interviewed in Nov. It would sweet if the girl from toronto (who will probably read this, as she said she reads SDN) would come and contribute and post. But im pretty sure she doesnt give back to SDN and just reads...just saying, it would be nice if you cleared that up

ummm I think AZCOM is supposed to be an OK school. There is a long thread somewhere on here talking about how only a few years ago AZCOM had some huge huge problems with rotations, faculty etc and almost closed. I would love to attempt to find it for you, but the computer I am on is being run by hampsters in a wheel, its so slow it would take me 5 hrs to find the thread when it could take anyone on a decent computer 5 mins lol

From what I gather now about azcom, theres nothing wrong with it but its not an excellent school. Thats just a personal opinion i have gathered from reading these forums for the last year or so, take what i say with a grain of salt

Point noted Drc.... but I must add that the school has become much better now. Its COMLEX pass rate is in top 3 and the school really puts all its efforts in making sure students do really well on board exams. Considering the school was established only about 16 years ago, I think this says a lot about Faculty's commitment. Further there have been an instance where a student from AZCOM have matched into dermatology at Mayo Clinic. Now you will definitely have to agree with me on this: Dermatology is the top most residency (in terms of competition) and getting into a Mayo Clinic residency is no mean achievement...

A student from that year was there on my interview day. He said students were solely responsible for the rotation disaster that occurred as they thought they could do a better job at placing themselves than school.... but then they realized and now the school is the one which decides.. Apparently AZCOM student body enjoys many freedoms! Its True folks!

They stopped interviewing on Nov 4.

There are lots of Canadians who do not contribute to this thread. Apparently there was somebody from my institution at the NSU interview exercise... Personal decision I guess, although it will be very nice for us to hear from them. More people, more thoughts, more camaraderie 🙂

last year an AZCOM student matched Gas at Harvard, that's no small achievement either. At the end of the day I'm of the philosophy: It's the student. Score a 260 on your boards and it won't matter if you went to the University of Alaska, polar bear chapter (no disrespect to Alaska, other than they're colder than I am most of the time - and I've shovelled snow 15 times in 3 days).

PS: We should see if we could all converge on one location and all meet up at some point over the summer. I mean, it's not like we can't all keep helping eachother out after we start school next year, so why not put some faces to names. Tips and tricks on rotations, exams, matching, etc. I'm thinking Vegas? Hangover style

i can't really say much about AZCOM since I have my interview in a month...but I saw their match result for a year ago or something...it was amazing..there were so so many subspecialities...(about 50%)it was a post to compare the match result of AZCOM to an MD school which I don't remeber......I try to find the post and get back to you since Im in my hotel for my KCUMB interview :scared:

Hey drc!

I am the girl from toronto. I hardly post on these forums as u can tell. I interviewed at azcom in October. And congrats on ur acceptance to Western- u really wanted one. My letter took forever to come from Western but it was good news.

I am trying to figure out my finances-330k for AZCOM. I will keep u guys posted how generous the banks are!

Good luck to all with upcoming interviews or waiting for decisions!!!

I did some leg work and discovered RBC and Scotia will both grant $200,000 lines to students who want to study medicine in the US at prime+1 which is 4% right now. The catch: You need a cosigner OR to have a good preexisting credit score

Do you have to bang your head against the wall to help these people understand what is osteopathic medicine or do they know? Further do you need a bank account in these banks to get a loan?

Howdy Dreams09: Why not Western for all its fame?

Thanks thumbz, i will be meeting with those banks soon.

VPP, it was just alot of factors for me. But in particular, it was Western's curriculum (which isn't traditional) and the actual location (pomona-the surrounding area seemed run-down). But the school's campus seems to be well-secured and of course i would be living in california. in addition, they have a good match list, solid rotations and canadians only need to show one year expenses. But the curriculum and surrounding neighbourhood, just made azcom a better choice for me. and i have also got family in AZ. But, without a doubt, Western is an amazing school but azcom just was a better fit for me!

Well, and of course I'll be at AZCOM. That right there is another like 30 reasons for you to attend dreams 😉.

VPP: I didn't actually ask about the osteo/allo thing(I didn't need the LOC, I was just in a meeting anyways so I asked on behalf of you guys). If I had to explain it I would just say "its like DMD and DDS, both are dentists".

So far I've just told the banks medicine at Midwestern University in Arizona and they check on their huge list and it's on it so they're fine.

Dreams I chose AZCOM over Western for a lot of the same reasons as you, I'm soooo excited about AZCOM! The campus is so nice and the atmosphere was way more my style than Western. Sounds like there are at least 5 of us going there now I think....dreams, thumbs, hotsauce, me and I think a few more. 😀

Hey christine, do you remember that recent post that had the link to the residency match list at AZCOM??? do you know how to find it???

I'm pretty sure it's in the first few pages of the AZCOM discussion. I have to go to work but if you don't find it I'll look for it when I get home....hehe or while I'm at work 😉

When was the last time you called/emailed/update them?? Did they just all the sudden send you an invite?

Maybe I should send them an email since I am still interested...

I didn't email or update them. I just stopped calling them: did not call them since early December. Seriously I had had enough of their nosy attitude. Frankly speaking all the Canadians who applied to LECOM-E were as good as (or may be a notch better) any they interviewed. No use of fretting. They are already interviewing for waitlist spots..

Accepted to AZCOM.... Rejected from McMaster 🙁 Sadness is ruling my heart at the moment

Congrats on Azcom, sorry to hear about McMaster.. was it a pre-interview refusal?

YES 🙁

I am coming to Western this week. We should meet up..

I just checked out your link to premed101 regarding DO school...I'm impressed..I wish I knew about it this whole time

VPP= congratz for AZCOM and screw Canadian schools!!

VPP, AZCOM will be a way better school than McMaster and you will have a way better time in arizona, should you attend. McMaster attracts the WEIRDEST people. In fact they recruit that. They want people who are "out of the ordinary" and possess unique things aka WEIRDOS lol I would not take it to heart, its McMaster. I would rather attend AZCOM anyday over a school with socially challenged but "unique" individuals.

congrats!

Hmmm.... I am from Mac 😳

Well its a shame still, I can't seem to get over this rejection. I hate how Mac keep throwing things like MMI, CASPer, VR (which is the strangest thing). Oh well I will not wait for another year to get Mac now... I hope God has good things in store for me.

In any case I will be going to Western for their interview this thursday. Any tips? I will chose Western over AZCOM.

There's this section on SDN with all the interview questions going back to 10 years ago. I studied off that and tailored my answers to those questions. Other than that, just interview the way you did for AZCOM and it'll be fine. Western is VERY Canadian friendly, and of course, emphasize how such a great school Western is, and how you would 100% choose Western over other schools. I did for my interview, and it worked out nicely =) I'm at school 8am this thursday (class). When do you get there? I'm off class at 12pm 🙂

Thank you Mashmetoo. Early Class "ouch". I get there at 11 the night before. I do not know how the interview day rolls out with interviews and campus tours..... Those who are more experienced any idea?

Thx, I did that thread partly because I got fed up with all the people going the Caribbean routes without doing their research - i.e. most of my friends. Also, there was a great lack of info for the DO route, and general misinformation out there regarding DO schools. So I wanted to set the record straight.

not only I think DO and MD are equal, I strongly believe it's even MORE...we get same education as MDs + OMM...that's how I explain osteopathic to everyone..."it's exactly like MD PLUS extra training" and that's exactly what it is...that's exactly how it should be explained by everyone IMO.

got a quick question for you mashmetoo..

your from westernU...how much do you pay for housing and what's the cheapest you can find closest to school?? cause at KCUMB I can rent a one-bedroom for as low as 550/month.

Oh man, that sucks. I don't know why. this whole process is so random- I am sure you will hear from them soon. did you ask them when will they look @ your secondary?

VPP: @ Western you have tours/ presentation in morning, lunch break from 12-1 and interviews are after lunch. after going through so many interviews, you will be fine. good luck.

no I didn't.....although I havent really received an interview from western I'm really considering KCUMB over both western and AZCOM for so many reasons..I dont know...i'm still in the deciding process though.

Depends on the location and the deal you get. Since its Socal, housing will be more expensive. I'm paying around 625 a month (nothing included) for a 2 bed room, 2 bathroom apartment (I got a roommate who pays the other half). Place comes with 2 parking spots. If you were to live by yourself, it'll be more expensive, I've seen anywhere from 725 - 900 a month (no utilities), parking probably included. What I'm paying now is actually pretty good 625, if you are really lucky, you can get that down to 575 (assuming you have a roommate). Classmate of mine moved next door to me, and they managed to negotiate their apartment (same as mine) for 1150 a month, which is pretty dam good.

so if you were to live alone where you are living right now, you would have paid 2X 625 = 1250 ?? how far away from school do you live?

Ya, if I were to live alone in that 2bedroom apartment, it would be 1250. Of course, they have single bedroom/bathroom options for like 900. I live 10-15min drive away, 3.5-4miles (depending if you drive local/highway). Very convenient I would say. And ya, since it's socal, you probably need a car once you get here.

What about the area Mashmetoo... I heard its pretty sketchy from the folks who live there...???
Hopefully car insurance is cheap there... do you own a car there?
