DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was thinking of going to SGU in January 2011...but now i'm just having second thoughts and would REALLLLY appreciate some help!

My stats are: cGPA 3.69, sGPA, 3.6, and MCAT 28Q. ---CANADIAN!

I don't know if I should re-take it and try for American MD schools, or apply for DO schools, or just stick with SGU!

If I go the US MD or DO route, I would not be able to start until September 2012, as opposed to January 2011 at SGU.

I would REALLLLY love some help and guidance!

Thanks

If you get high 30s on the mcat you could have a shot for MD. You should also be able to get into DO schools with your current stats. It is getting late in the cycle so your chances at MD or DO for US schools are going down by the day.

I am not really a big fan of the caribbean so its completely upto you. I thought I'd have a better shot at staying in north america for residency if I don't head offshore. Plus, the DO philosophy interested me a lot which is why i'm solely applying DO

Rest is upto you. You could go now and finish by 2014 or 2015. You will be done earlier but whats the point if it becomes tougher for carib grads to grab a residency spot. Looking at last years match, its certainly not getting any easier.

Agree with jaywalk on pretty much everything.

Canadians are at a disadvantage in the first place applying to US schools, and people who applied back in June etc are just getting accepted now. Classes are filling up fast. Every time i come on SDN i read of more acceptances. However, its up to you. With your stats you might stand a chance now but im not too sure since you are Canadian

I would suggest two options (one is more realistic):

A) Wait until next summer and apply early to US DO schools. However this means you will have a year off or w.e. You cant get a DO reference letter (which is highly recommended if not mandatory at most DO schools)

B) Go to SGU and apply next summer to US DO. This way if you dont get into US DO you be in 2nd year med at SGU. However, obviously if you do get accepted into US DO this means you lost X amount of money to SGU

Hey guys,

Not to resurrect a dead thread or anything, but this one is only 12 days old now so I'm gonna bump it back up to the top.

How is everyone doing? I'm a Canadian as well, go team. U of Alberta student. I'm interviewing at NOVA next week and at AZCOM the week after. Any of you Canadians manage to garner any acceptances yet?

That is terrible advice, considering the current demographic changes of US medical schools and stagnant residency spots, also the fact that DOs are largely equals of MDs in the US, residency programs in the coming years will favor DOs over IMGs. In other words good luck getting a residency as an IMG especially a Caribbean med school.

Uhh not really. Are you Canadian? It depends on the person. If they dont mind waiting around not in school than ya they can keep waiting around and apply for DO. I was saying if they dont want to wait, go to SGU as a back up (if they have the money to waste). This way if they dont get into DO after 2 tries, they will be done TWO years at SGU. If you are not completely useless and are capable of studying, it is very possible to get a residency spot in the US somewhere. Do you have any idea how many spots there are?

I am well aware of the changing system and the gap is closing. If you actually understand anything at all about the change, you will know it is about new medical schools opening up all over the US. I have news for you, they dont pop up over night. They take a few years to get started. SGU would be cutting it VERY close if the person went there now.

However to each his own opinion, just know I have friends there who are doing just fine with their clinicals and everything because they are capable of staying ahead of the game. My facts dont come from SDN they come from my friends who are there experiencing it

We want to keep this thread alive! Congrats on the interviews. Thats impressive. I only have one and thats at Touro-NY. Im not even complete at NSU cuz im waiting for a LOR. I was put on hold at AZCOM🙁

I'm holding off on Touro until I find out from NSU, most because I sincerely don't want to drop the $200 fee for no reason.

Best of luck with NSU! I'm sure you'll get an interview after you're complete. Oddly enough they offered me an interview without having my LOR's.

Are we sure NSU accepts Canadians? On their website it says they only take kids with Green Cards or citizens, yet they know I'm not one and they offered me an interview. And word of mouth says several students from Canada are currently attending. It confuses me 😕

They do accept Canadians, I was private messaging a dude who goes there and was asking him all that stuff. I think my GPA is way too low for NSU.

What are your stats if you dont mind me asking? Must be pretty good to get an interview at AZCOM and NSU

My stats aren't enough to really blow anyone out of the water.

cGPA: 3.44
sGPA: 3.48

MCAT 31T - 10, 10, 11(BS)

EC's are pretty standard. I suppose one thing that sets me apart is that I play bagpipes?

Compared to the average person on SDN, your stats are pretty good so I Can see how you got interviews. While they arent very competitive in Canada (as you are used to hearing), in the US thats super competitive. Usually people with your GPA get in with 25 MCATs or with a 31 MCAT get in with a 3.0

Yah, I was told my shot in Canada is about 40% based on how well I interview. Hopefully what you say holds true for Canadians going to America, I know usually we are viewed in a more competitive pool being internationals. I just hope I wow them at my interviews (which I'm starting to become just a week bit nervous for so I sincerely hope I can keep that under control).

When do you interview at Touro?

I interview Dec 8th which im not too pleased about because I have had all my stuff in for quite some time. However, its still an interview!

You know there is an interview thread on SDN right? It has old questions, people rate the interview etc. Give that a good read im sure it will help🙂

Great thread!
Good luck to everyone with interviews.

darn it, the schools that have fewer interview feedbacks also do not take Canucks =(

so alot of the applications are asking for Visa info; correct me if I'm mistaken but as Canuck citizens, I don't think we need a Visa for US? I just feel weird leaving it blank 😵

also, how long did the lecom-erie secondary take to arrive at your inbox? mine hasn't come =(

and is lecom-brad taking canadians?? i thought they didn't

I havent had to provide any Visa information yet, I think you only do once you are accepted..but yes u definitely need a visa (i cant remember which one off top of my head, maybe J1? H1? Those come to mind)

I submitted primary to LECOM-E in August...and they are still reviewing it. AKA I got rejected because their class is significantly full already.

LECOM-B told me they accept Canadians so I applied.....however they told other Canadians they do not accept us. I got rejected right away after submitting my $50!! So im pretty sure it was a money scheme. Be forewarned

^thanks. Quite sad to hear about LECOM-E though =(
i emailed NSU and got a reply from Dr. Whitehead. He said they no longer take Canadians. I don't know what's going on anymore
I don't know whether to submit a 2ndry in the hopes that they might not see that I'm a Canadian *sigh*

thumbz: congrats on getting the NSU interview man *thumbz up*

Wait, WHAT? they no longer accept canadians? I dont get it, how come several canadians are interviewing there than?

Can somewhere clarify this? I only ask cuz im getting my 4th LOR THIS WEEK!!!! And it was only so i could be complete at NSU!!!

I don't get it either and it baffles me as well. His answer was 1 line and here it is: "We no longer accept Canadian students. "
I would be glad to have someone refute that as well; I bugged a prof for a letter just for NSU 🙁

I will be pissed off if I'm spending $1200 to go interview at a school that no longer accepts Canadians, yet they didn't bother informing me of this and still invited me for interview.

Edit: I'll let you all know how it goes. I honestly don't think they would interview me just to then say "We are rejecting you based on your citizenship". Seeing as the $1200 is non-refundable now I may as well be a guinea pig. I'll update as I know more.

When is ur interview?

I agree with u though I dont think they would invite you for interview if they didnt accept canadians. Also I would find it very weird if they changed their policies halfway through application period

Yes I agree drcother. It doesn't make sense they stopped accepting Canadians after we submitted our primaries/secondaries. I'll find out. I fly out to Toronto in 13 hours and will be in Ft. Lauderdale at 3:00 local time on Sunday. Going to check out the school myself on Monday, make sure I can find everything, and interview on Tuesday, Oct 26.

Ya if you could find that would be sweet. Thanks! Good luck with ur interview! Represent the Canadians by being smart and aware of the world around u lol. Maybe bring a basket with things like maple syrup, canadian bacon, a plaid tshirt, and a beaver stuffed animal. They cant say no with that😛

I agree they can't reject you based on citizenship but let's say you're the ideal candidate, except for the fact that you don't have a green card. Couldn't they spin it off with something else in your application to say no?

anyway, knock 'em dead thumbz. you are our official ambassador to get this inconsistency cleared up 😉.
Btw the person who replied to me is Dr. Bart Whitehead.
I faced this with LMU as well: the admin said they do take canadians but many students here said LMU stopped this cycle. It's just frustrating when the list of schools that will take us gets smaller and smaller.

Especially considering when we bring such strong academics to the table from our education system AND bring a whole different perspective from our health care system. Sure Americans can read about systems similar to ours, but we have actually experienced it. For those reasons alone, I think it is foolish not to want more Canadians. Not to mention we are always considered OOS (higher tuition).....and have to prove we can pay for all med school without getting US federal loans (aka one less mess for them to deal with)

Plus our women are hotter, but thats a whole different story😛

Well, just arrived in Florida. With starting in Edmonton, a 4 hour layover in TO and then flying here, I've been up for 28+ hours. I got here and my GPS didnt work and Bell wants $52.99/MB data roaming on my phone so the maps feature was out. So imagine a small towner Canadian driving on the 595 having no idea where he was going. I think I almost had a heart attack haha

But! I made it! I drove by the campus on my way to Wendys to feed (its been 18+ hours since I've eaten) and I can tell you right now its a beautiful looking campus. Tomrrow I'm going to explore it and I'll tell you guys more.

Oh, pretty sure I saw a dude walking down the street with a samurai sword. I locked my doors

Edit: THE HUMIDTY IS SAVAGE! All my paper are wrinkling in my hotel room. I had to crank to AC to try and dehumidfy my room a bit so I don't ruin all my notes. I have a midterm the day I get home so this is a study vacation

WTF are you sure thats right? That seems WAY too high.

Im sure the samurai sword is a common thing in florida, didnt u see scarface😛

Lookin forward to more feedback tomorrow🙂

Hello Fellow Canadians,

I have also joined the bandwagon of people applying to States for DO schools... I am applying with the following stats:
3.92cGPA 3.93sGPA 36R (9VR 🙁)
I already have an interview from DMU (Nov 4th). But I just finished my secondaries for CCOM, AZCOM, NSU this weekend. Can somebody tell me what's the turn around time for these schools... I know I am Late... but hope not very late (been busy finishing up MD secondaries).... Can somebody tell me how quickly these schools got back to you with interviews? Also, has anyone received any consideration at all from LECOM-E and LECOM-B (I know people are saying latter does not accept Canadians any more)? Its been more than 20 days since I finished their secondaries but I see myself under review each time I look at my status (very very disheartening). Can somebody here please answer this question?

Thank you.

VPP: you're really late, especially being Canadian, but your grades are excellent so you should be ok. But really, with those stats you should be able to walk into any Canadian university too, so you'll get into a school somewhere I'm sure. To answer your timeline questions, I still haven't heard from CCOM and LECOM E/B. AZCOM offered me an interview 25 hours after going complete and NSU COM offered me one long before I was complete.

So, I went to NSU COM campus today, and it was stunning. First off, it's snowing in my hometown right now. And it's 33*C here. I wonder where I would rather be. Beyond that, the buildings are all incredibly modern and well finished. No visible marks on them at all which is surprising. Really fancy, well trimmed ground with lots of fountains, man made lakes and palm trees. And just to add to it, there was a family of swans hanging out in one of them. And then some scary canada goose/turkey hybrid also, which I snapped a picture of because it looks so odd. The staff I asked for help were all very nice, and the student body seemed cheerful and friendly. Everyone was wearing scrubs.

Area around the school seems nice, like this definitely isn't in a bad area of town. Surrounded by gas stations, pharmacy's and fast food. The humidity here is savage though. All my papers have wrinkled up and feel wet. I am not looking forward to wearing a full suit in this weather tomorrow.

Tomorrow is my actual interview. There I will find out a final note on their no Canadians policy. I feel like Snoopy with the No Dogs Allowed signs

I am hoping against hope that I am not very late... I read somewhere Canadians got accepted into CCOM after interviewing in March of the school year (I think this thread).. I plan to make most of the interview that I have--I hope Nov is not an awful time to interview. Hopefully I get some more interviews.
With a 9 in VR I do not know how much of a chance I have in Canada... I am from Ontario, where a 9 in VR just reduces one to U of T. So i thnk applying to other provinces in Canada is equivalent to applying to US....
Can you tell what were your stats buddy?

Good luck thumbz and thanks for the updates. Maybe we'll all end up at some beautiful campus and talk about missing the snow!

thumbz i just read you play the bagpipes; wicked!
how awesome would it be if you play them at orientation for the DO school you choose to go to? i hope i'm there to witness it. 👍 tmrw

Stats:

MCAT: 28Q
cGPA: 3.65
sGPA: 3.63

I haven't even submitted my application to AACOMAS yet...but I have everything complete and have all my letters on interfolio already.

I'm not sure how long the processing time is now, but that is pretty much how long it would take me to be complete. What do you think of my chances? I'm not too sure how late it is now because the schools I called said it's still OK, but I don't know if they are just saying that to make more $$ off the secondaries or not.

Thanks!

^ depends, would it matter to you (financially) if you go through the process of spending $$$ and there's a chance that you don't make? if it doesn't matter, apply. does it matter to you that you get in next year? if so, apply.

Well...I do care if I waste money. My stats are the same as the class profile so I thought I had a pretty fair chance, I just didn't know how late I was in the cycle to apply.

^lol i should've phrased that finance question differently.
you could try calling / emailing aacomas and asking them how long its taking these days to process the primary.
keep in mind, your app is not complete until they get your transcript(s), which goes via 'sloth' mail

lol The word sloth doesn't make it seem all that fast....

I'm just having second thoughts of going the SGU (Caribbean) route and thought i'd try at DO schools because i've been researching it a lot more.

How dead set are you on going to med school next year? Your stats are pretty competitive in D.O and if you just apply in next year's cycle you'd get quite a few interviews invitations. When it comes to Carribean schools I'd be a bit wary, especially when you have a lot more options in the next year's cycle.

you could have it delivered express, if you talk to your school. it was sloth pace for me because 1 of my transcript took 2weeks at least to reach aacomas and another day or so before they attached my transcript to the file. but after that it was processed fairly quickly.

i was in the same boat with SGU; but what i realized is that it doesn't make a difference. The jan 2011 and the Sept 2011 classes both apply for the same match (in 2015). So worst come to absolute-end-of-the-world-scenario :scared:, i can go to SGU in Sept 2011 and still apply to match in 2015.
NB: I have nothing against the carib, just prefer US over it

Hey guys,

This is gonna be a short one. I have a MT coming up which im studying for and our st. bernard just passed away 4000 miles from me so I'm dealing with my mom one that one long distance. Just want to say thanks for all the good lucks, hopefully my interview went well today. It was my first ever, so I was so nervous I was shaking haha.

NSU is an amazing school, they sell themselves really well. The interview was nice and relaxed, with the exception of a couple questions that caught me off guard. But I didn't overly prepare for my interview because I didn't want my responses to sound canned. So maybe that turned out to be a downfall, who knows. I definitely got asked about Obama's bill and the current US healthcare system and the whole works, so luckily I did some research on that prior to hitting the interview. I still stumbled through trying to explain it though, there is just so much to it. Live and learn I suppose. Uhm, if you guys have any specific questions for me please by all means post them up and if I have an answer/experience with it I will answer as best I can.

All in all, I would absolutely love to go to NSU. They make an amazing impression. And the student tour guides were amazing as well, the one guy Aaron was absolutely hilarious and he single handedly made me want to attend NSU ten times as much.

Oh, they know your file frontwards and backwards. They quoted lines from my PS from memory. I was actually really impressed.

so many new Canadians, good to hear.

Im just curious (and you can answer honestly, this is anonymous forum). How many of you actually believe in the DO philosophy and are ONLY applying to DO? I might be generalizing (correct me if I am) but seems like many people who apply late in the game at this point and are canadian, are just doing this as a back up to ensure they can get into any medical school because they have only known about DO for say a 3 months or less? If you knew about DO and have taken the time to understand it (shadow too), than why apply this late?

Not trying to offend anyone, just curious if people applying now actually believe in DO or are just doing it as back up

thumbz did they say anything about not taking canadians?

No, no one said anything. I asked my interviewers and they had no idea. The assistant dean made a joke that since I was Canadian they would have to give me special consideration since there are so few at the school. Ellen Rondino never mentioned it to me but I didn't directly ask her. I talked to some of the other interviewees and they agreed that its unlikely they would invite me to interview if they didnt accept Canadians. I mean interview space is limited and the school gets no additional money from interviewing me. They could have just grabbed my secondary money and rejected me pre interview. So I guess we will find out based on whether or not I get accepted =P

Hello Friends,

I called LECOM-Bradenton today to inquire about whether or not Canadians are accepted. The lady said they are accepting Canadians for admission for next fall. So the natural question was: "why is my application not processed so far, its been a month?" She looked at my application and said that I am missing credits in chemistry, orgo, english, and Behavioural science. I told that I am doing the last two courses, but I do fulfill chemistry and orgo requirements. The reason why I am enlisted as deficient in these courses is because of the different credit hour system we have up north. So she told me to have my institution send her a letter clarifying the content of the course. According to her this will aid the admissions committee. Even though we keep getting different responses, I guess some of you can probably call them tomorrow and ask them about this? Probably its our deficient credits that's putting our applications on hold.... story goes on.

VPP: While I have no control in anyway what you do, I highly recommend you DO NOT apply there. I know this sounds nuts because this is an anonymous forum but I asked as well. I was told to apply so I shipped my $50 or w.e.......

a few weeks later I received a letter of rejection saying I am international and they do not accept Canadians. I doubt they changed their policy in only a month.

So Im pretty sure I was used as a money grab because really, what can I do about it? Nothing. Period.

It is obviously your choice, but be forewarned they screwed me bad. And in case you are wondering of my citizenship etc....I was born in Canada, lived in Canada my whole life and went to one of the top Canadian schools

Good luck whatever you do🙂

drctother: I submitted my application to LECOMs exactly a month ago. I have been very upset and frustrated at their no-response: gotten sick of refreshing my email page to find if they have emailed anything... and called them 100 times to find I have been forwarded to a voice mail🙁. So I am as frustrated as you are! (I do not doubt your Canadian(ness) buddy... its frustration to get that spot in their college.
I did get an affirmative response. I posted this out only for folks out here who want to go to this school. Well if you have gotten a letter from them, then I guess... (conclude as you may wish).

VPP: yaa I got screwed with the credits thing at MSU (which i didnt even submit secondary, that place is a joke) and Western. Both schools fronted about the credits so it sucks I know. Western is also VERY picky on how to prove the credits. Well if you got an affirmative response than good luck, I hope they dont screw you over like they did me thats all. Maybe I was rejected for another reason and it was easier to just say its due to my citizenship? I dunno.

Also perhaps we have the same woman giving us false information, was it Louise?

Just wanna clear this up for other Canadians who want to apply so we can figure out if A) I was just flat rejected and they used my citizenship as an excuse and they actually take Canadians now or B) Its a quick money grab because we cant do anything
