DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will say people who are going to apply to LECOMs take a very close notice of this line on the LECOM pdf on AACOMAS: Internationals are selected "In Select Cases". IT might just mean tht they only take students who did their undergrad in US?.. But ask them before you apply

Hey guys, Touro accepted me so they take Canadians for sure!

Just a question with the semester hours, how did you deal with the 6 vs 8 hrs difference between Canadian and US schools?

I am technically deficient in some pre req courses because of this difference.

Thanks

Congrats! Representin the Canadians! Hopefully I will be in that boat too by end of December with an acceptance🙂 I know of another Canadian who just interviewed a while back as well🙂

There is going to be one of two ways to approach this: A)you directly deal with Touro or B)Touro makes you deal with AACOMAS. I hear the admin at Touro is horrible so most likely you will be contacting AACOMAS but who knows.

I had a similar problem with Western. The admissions woman told me to "prove" the credits lol which was quite a challenge as I found out. Your school website may be east to navigate...the UBC one is not. UBC has a page were it explains how credits are given out and broken down. For example Physics 101 is listed as [3-0-3] for 3 credits and this has to be explained. At UBC it works so the first # is number of hours of lecture per week, second is discussion/tutorial and 3rd # is hours of lab per week. Does your school have similar breakdown? This may be good enough for Touro

Good luck

hey guys

I just received the email to fill out my secondary for an MD school. in the secondary it asked for Type of VISA I'm on and it was required to fill it out.

So I was wondering Do we as Canadians need to be on a VISA now before any interview acceptance or any final acceptance? Or should we take care of VISA after acceptances? how does this work?

If we need to be on VISA beforehand, how long does it take to get one? what kind should I get? How should I get it?

Thanks

You do NOT need a visa to attend your interviews as a Canadian citizen as long as you have your passport/enhanced drivers license. You can enter the U.S with these documents. If you are accepted however, you NEED a students visa in order to stay and study in the U.S. It takes forever to get an appointment at US embassies for visas so once you get accepted, please book an appointment for your visa immediately. Hope this helps.

You need an I-20 to get F1 status...dont worry about this until after you are accepted. The school sets up the I20 and all that and they help you along the process, but this is only if you are an accepted student.

Ideally getting it changed on aacomas would be nice but they just write down whatever is on your transcript.

Ill try to show them that its "two semesters w/ lab" and maybe that will be good enough...i really dont want to do 2-3 more courses lol.

thanks

Ya i know what you mean. Its like "thanks for the offer but I will pass on the Ochem, Chem, Bio, and physics first year and second year courses". Been there done that!

so do all of you have 3 credits and 6 credits on your aacomas then?

Generally yes, with the exception of a few courses. Almost all my 3rd and 4th year science courses were 3 or 6 credits. For UBC this is the case (they arent actually labeled 1 or 2 but i did that for simplicity):

Physics 1 + 2 = 3 credits each although they have lab
Chem 1 + 2 = 4 credits each with lab
Biology 1 + 2 + lab = 8 credits
OChem 1 + 2 = 4 credits each w lab

My problems were with Physics for credit shortage

Touro!!! Just got the call. Interviewed on OCT20. Good Luck to all my fellow Canadians!!!

Still waiting on UNECOM! But I know I am going to medical school next year!

Wow, this thread is great! I stumbled into here just for curiousity / fun ... I wish this thread was around when I was applying way back when. I'm a Canadian and set to graduate in about 6 months from a DO school. Currently going through the fun, expensive, marathon better known as residency interviews!

Good luck to you all. If you have any questions feel free to holler.

Afternoon folks,

Time for the single happiest post I have ever made.

NSU does still accept us from the Great White North. I interviewed Oct 26 and got the email this morning in class. I expected it to be a rejection so I yelled out loud when I got it. Now the class knows I'm accepted haha.

Absolute best of luck to all you still going through it. I interviewed at AZCOM on Nov 2, I'll let ya all know how that went to.

IM GOING TO BE A DOCTOR! 😀

Congratulations to all those accepted 🙂

Correction, a Doctor with a TAN if you go to NSU😀

Does anyone know what the policy is for ATSU/KCOM?

On the international admissions page, http://www.atsu.edu/kcom/admissions/international.htm, it says you need to study in the US for 1 year. 🙁

Hello thegame11

I called them to ask them what's up with this requirement. They said its NOT for Canadian students. On the Canadian med forum mashmetoo and feelitburn got interviews from ATSU/KCOM.. mashmetoo never mentioned he did a year in US.. he did his undergrad at U of T

ok, thanks 🙂

Called LECOM/Erie... they said they are do consider Canadians, but they are wary of the Visa issues... according to the rep it shouldn't be an issue if any one of us deserving candidates get interviewed in March/april (although this is very hard to digest)... Lecom/E c'mon be quick!

Just got accepted to AZCOM 1 week after my interview! So they still love us Canucks too. Good luck to all you guys!

Just got accepted to UNECOM!!!! 4 Weeks after interview!! Now its decision time...NEW YORK OR BIDDEFORD MAINE.

NY- Cheaper (10grand difference)
-New
- City
- High cost of living
- Plenty distractions
MAINE-Expensive
-Older
-Rural
-Lower cost of living
- Fewer distractions

Totally opposites!

GOOD LUCK FELLOW CANUCKS! One at a time we all will get in!!

Congrats!

IMHO: don't worry about tuition, 10k a year is a drop in the bucket when you really consider what we are getting ourselves into. And take the distractions. If you're like most of us you didn't get a chance to live much in premed. Don't do the same thing to yourself in med school. Try to have one night a week where you can kick it a bit. That's what I'm going to try to do. I mean, after residencies we are all going to be 30+.

Thats my 2 cents

Thanks man! Never really thought about it that way..."Live a little eh"! Hmmmm....Anymore opinions??

Albertan and Accepted to AZCOM a month ago!

Gooooo Canucks!! Acceptances coming in Bunches!!!! Congrats!

congratulations to all!

christine121 and thumbz, when were you guys complete at azcom? how long after completion did they call you for interview?

I think I completed early-mid Sept then interviewed around the 30th and was in like 3 days later.

I went complete first week of October, got invited for an interview within 24 hours. Interviewed Nov 2 and heard back a week later.

Good luck!

Christine, I'm a fellow Albertan. Edmontonian right here. (I'm Chris, pleased to meet all of you by the way)

I'm from Calgary and I think there's another guys from Edomton accepted there too! Have you joined the facebook group? I can't wait to move down there and get out of the cold.

Congrats to all the Canucks. Christine did you interview at Touro or just Western and AZCOM? Congrats on the acceptance🙂

I grew up in Calgary but I will never be a flames fan😛, Vancouver Canucks fan here!

Hello fellow Canadians! I got accepted to AZCOM same time as Thumbz a couple of days ago... another Edmontonian representing! Good luck everybody on their applications... I was waitlisted last year cuz I applied late so its nice to know whats happening for next year and to get started on all the Visa and financial requirments. PM, if you have any questions you think i can help with.

When you "applied late", when did you actually apply? Just curious. Some people consider August late (myself) while others consider December late. Depends on grades.

Would you Canadians who got accepted mind sharing your stats? It would be greatly appreciated🙂and its anonymous

3.64 sGPA and cGPA
30N, undergrad at UofT

Accepted to AZCOM on oct 21, I: oct 19, c: aug 16, ii: aug 21

good luck

3.7 sGPA, 3.6 GPA, 31Q MCAT, honours Geophysics degree (non trad). Applied in January last year and got waitlisted at my mid april interview. Completed mid September this year and accepted end of September.

Hey fellow canadians!
just got the first response from the schools I've interviewed at, and I've been accepted at UNE-COM. Pretty excited to know i'm going to med school, but now comes the hard part! UNE-COM is expensive( So are many of the DO or MD schools Ive interviwed at), and with no finaid for us canadian folks, I'd have to find about 350K loans to pay for it...
My worries are: do canadian banks make a distinction between DO and MD for loans?
How have any of you guys financed, or plan on financing a DO med school education?

"hey guys can you confirm the following please? I'm currently pretty pissed at being a Canadian and Canucks just lost 😡

1)ATSU-KCOM says that I need to spend one year in the US prior to matriculation and that I have to take TOEFL? are these true? why the hell would I have to take TOEFL?

2)DMU says that "You must prepay tuition, fees and expenses for your entire course of study at Des Moines University prior to April 30 of the year you will enroll" is this true? i mean why on earth would they ask such a think? they could just just we don't accept internationals..

and I just noticed that the secondaries for MDs are way easier than DOs...all DOs have very long essay questions and evaluation forms for the referees...MDs rarely had any of that...

thanks for your input

you can ignore my first questions...it was already answered in this forum...tnx

Yes buddy... that's true... if you are in DMU, you will have to submit about $250,000 straight up.... very daunting 🙁 but true 🙁

250 G's? Thats it? Let me check my piggy bank in my bedroom😛

it's disappointing since DMU is one of the good ones...

do you guys happen to know if
Pikeville College, School of Osteopathic Medicine accepts Canadians?

there is nothing on the website. and I emailed them and asked them if they do and their reply was so ridiculous....they gave me the course requirements...i mean really...

Hey guys,

For those of you who applied to KCUMB, did you get the secondary application?

I have called them so many times! (been calling since last month) I was finished before you! My GPA (3.92) and MCAT (36R) are not helping me here.... I am sure my Personal statement was not that bad 🙁 I am being told my file is still under review... before it was that the review committee had gone to some sort of conference?
