Hey guys,

Thread posted like this a couple years ago but just wondering if there was any recent data you guys have come across that can show the growth of DO's and their friendliest areas? I know Cali is a big no/no, almost unheard of in SoCal except in primary care. I imagine rural/underserved areas, but any ideas/data sheets you guys have come across? I work for a hospital in AZ and DO's are hard to find as hospitalists, but pretty easy to find in private practice.

Most states with the older DO schools are DO friendly. Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Texas...I got an interview for residency from univ. of Arizona if that means anything

I'm curious about the consensus on the Northeast? Especially the NYC and Boston metro areas.

Completely agree. I would also add Iowa to the list. And from what I hear from family friends (MDs) practicing in Colorado, they seem to be on the upward trend too.

definitely states that have state do schools:
texas, oklahoma, new jersey, ohio, west virginia, michigan.

Every state if you're the best bro.

I'm going to guess that Boston isn't very DO friendly.. BU, Tufts, and Harvard? Cmon.

This is incorrect. I am in SoCal and personally know a few DO derms and orthopods. If I personally know a handful, I am sure there are more.

Univ. of Massachusetts is DO friendly, but Boston isn't at all. NYC is US-IMG friendly, but not DO friendly.

Iowa is friendly, but Colorado isn't exactly friendly. University of Colorado, for instance, charges DO 4th year students $4000 to do a 4 week, non-primary care elective. Primary care electives are $2000. MDs pay around $200.

Friendly in what context? To work in? I find it hard to believe that, in such a physician crisis, an entire state would hold a prejudice against a doctor and not allow him to practice in their state. Are there places within a state where DO's are unlikely to get a job?maybe, especially near big academic centers. However, I highly doubt some random small BFE town in Colorado is gonna give a rats ass about a doctor having a DO. They just want practitioners.

Idaho is very DO friendly. I know of ENT's, general surgeons, and a dermatologist who are all doing very well. Then again, the state only has two residencies and they are both ACGME FM, so if you are specifically talking DO friendly residencies then it doesn't mean a whole lot.

I know of a DO orthopod is SoCal who did an MD spine fellowship. Also Arrowhead Medical Center has a lot of AOA specialty residencies.

You can get a job in every state in the US as a DO. I have never been denied a license as a DO. There is just a lesser population of DO's in the West but doesn't mean we don't exist and doesn't mean you can't get a job.

California is just as open as any. I have 2 friends who are DO's in California and neither one had any problems getting a job.

I've worked at two hospitals here in DC and I always see a handful of DO's wandering around. So far I've seen Internal med, Emergency med, Nephrology, OBgyn, Pulm/Critical care, anesthesia and Psychiatry DO's.

I also worked at Arrowhead Regional in California and there were tons there too.

Every state if you're the best bro.
THIS 😉

Makes sense. Isn't Arrowhead affiliated with Western-COMP?

I can attest to much of the gulf south, sans Florida and Texas, being very unaware of the DO path. Hopefully this changes with the 2 new schools.

Technically they also have a ACGME IM residency through UW that's in Boise. But agreed Idaho is pretty DO friendly. Both FM programs and the IM program accept DOs consistently, even being ACGME.

Interesting. Also, now that I look at it, it looks like each of the FM programs is branching out into smaller programs as well, at least according to the ACGME program search.

Florida is quite DO friendly. Here is a link for hospitals in Florida. There're other states if you wanna check, too. http://hcahealthcare.com/about/facilities.dot

Lol that's just a list of hospitals that are run by HCA. Although I'm sure that you can find DOs in their hospitals, HCA doesn't have any special connection with osteopathy.
