Hello All!
I graduated in May 2011 with a B.S. in Psychology and LOVE this field. I am so passionate about helping others with disorders, marriage/family problems, etc and I know that this is the right career path for me. Here's the thing, I am interested in research and wouldn't mind doing it. Before majoring in Psychology, I was a Biology/Pre- Pharmacy major. Another student and I did research for a Pharmacologist and it was very interesting I must say. I presented a poster at a national conference and have a published article as well. I worked as a Pharmacy tech, and needless to say I didn't like the job all that much so I switched my major to Psychology and excelled at it with the exception of a couple of classes. I got an A in stats but a C in Methods for Psychological Inquiry. My psychology gpa is a 3.25 and overall is 3.2 I believe and I'm actually currently volunteering in a clinical setting with School Psychologists. I have not yet taken the GRE but I plan to take it in late August and again in November if I need to. I was actively involved in three organizations and had several leadership roles and I am a member of Psi Chi National Honor Society. My question is, do I have a chance at getting into either the MFT or MA Psychology programs? Which one would be better to get into to prepare myself for Ph D or Psy D in Clinical Psych? I'm looking into Pepperdine for one because it's a Christian University and two it's a highly reputable university and possesses strong values.

Hello All!
I'm looking into Pepperdine for one because it's a Christian University and two it's a highly reputable university and possesses strong values.

Are you looking into Pepperdine for the PsyD (in which case an MFT would actually be smart preparation--they require a masters and do admit some folks from their own masters programs), or for the MA/MFT? If you are in SoCal you can earn a reputable MA for much less money (see previous threads on terminal masters programs which prepare students for the doctorate).

Also:

There have been previous threads on Pepperdine (including one I started). I'm not sure what you mean by "strong values"--if you are seeking a politically conservative atmosphere, or a school with an explicitly religious psychology curriculum. Either way, according to the feedback I've received, both on this thread and elsewhere, Pepperdine's psych grad programs may not suit your needs in that regard:

I ultimately want to pursue a psy d. I have a 3.2 program so I dnt know if I would be competetive to go straight to the psy d. I was originally interested in the Ph D program for clinical psych but have determined that I just want to practice but also obtain a doctorate as that is my own personal goal. I currently live in Texas but I have visited Southern California and I love both states

I'd check out the Pepperdine website; last time I checked, they didn't admit people into the PsyD program without a masters, and you have to take both the GRE and psych subject test.

Yes,
I researched that but I was wondering is 3.2 gpa competitive for a MFT program or MA Psychology program

Master's-level programs are generally less competitive, yes. A 3.2 wouldn't put you out of the running at most programs. Are you looking for a terminal master's degree that will allow you to obtain licensure and practice, or are you looking for a stepping stone to the Ph.D./Psy.D.?

Hi!
I'm looking for a program that is going to be beneficial for me to be a competitive candidate for the psy d program. Are you currently a grad student? If so, which program?
Thanks

I'd use the search function--there really has been a wealth of information about this very topic in previous threads.
