Do I need a computer?

Hey khan,

As for needing one, totally depends on the school and if they're heavy into some sort of e-curriculum or not - you'll have to ask the school you're interested in about that. But seeing as how you're posting on this forum I'm sure you'd have one regardless.

It's totally a matter of personal preference whether to get a laptop or desktop (or even to get a new computer at all... I got by with my 6-year-old Pentium 166 sans internet at home). You've prolly read that laptops just outsold desktops for the first time, which you can interpret as a good thing or a bad thing.

If you really need to play games and use a real keyboard, keep the desktop. Otherwise, if I had the $ for a new computer, I'd get a laptop - useful for class presentations, Powerpoints, studying derm atlases, and lots of schools have wireless internet all over nowadays so in case lecture drags on and on and on, you can at least check your mail (or post on SDN!).

it'd be a really good idea to wait to buy a computer once you get into schoo. more and more schools are requiring that their incoming students purchase a computer from the school's bookstore, so unless you have the $$ lying around and want to be the proud owner of 2 computers, i'd wait.

I have a laptop and have been quite happy with it. I can even play some serious games on it without any significant problems. While it is true that a desktop will give you more bang for the buck, after a certain point the extra bang is just frivolous. My laptop is less than two years old and is already seriously outdated. And, while that sucks a$$ for me😡 it is awesome news for you if you are looking at buying a computer today:clap: Laptops have some serious powers now, and aren't that expensive any more. The best part about a laptop is, undoubtedly, its mobility. I have moved a couple of times since buying it, and its great not having to worry about getting rid of it or shipping it, both of which are losing propositions in my opinion. Keep that in mind while making your decision.

with regards

I definitely agree with the poster above who suggested waiting until medical school to purchase a computer, but my personal recommendation as for what to buy is definitely a laptop. One of the myths about laptops is their high cost, but if you are willing to shop around at websites, they can be just as cheap as any computer around.

My Compaq Presario laptop ran $750 after tax, shipping, rebates and easily runs faster than most of the desktops on the market, though it has a smaller harddrive. Either way though, you don't have to break the bank to buy a computer, whether its a laptop or a desktop, so look at fatwallet.com for good computer deals and www.pricewatch.com if you have the technical knowledge to build your own computer (which surprisingly is not that much-- anyone can build a decent computer for under $400 if you are willing to risk going without tech support. The parts click together much like Legos 🙂
