The school I was just accepted to has no requirements for mac vs. pc, but I know a large majority choose to use macs. I just bought a brand new Sony Vaio about a year ago and am wondering if I need to go ahead and just spring for a mac? Thanks!

i don't see any point if you just bought a new one recently

the school will prob have a list of requirements that you'll need to fulfill when you get a laptop (x amount of RAM, etc.), so if your laptop fulfills those requirements---great. if not, you might have to get a new one.

Unless you just want a Mac, I'd keep your laptop. You'll be throwing enough money around over the next few years. Those RAM and processor requirements are so low that a brick with 2 LED lights and silver paint usually qualifies. Your computer will be fine. Since it is a PC, make sure and stay up on maintenance like defrag, anti-virus, etc. and back that thing up all the time.

If you could sell your Sony and be able to get into a new Mac for <$500 that might be an option. I know once I went Mac it was game over for me buying another PC. The cost is greater initially but in the long run it is worth it all. I initially had a macbook pro my first couple years of undergrad but found it was more computer than I needed so I sold it and bought a macbook air. I am debating on whether to keep my current air but if I can get enough for it (which I should be able to) I'll get another faster air or spring for a new macbook pro with a solid state drive. It is up to you on what you want to do but if you think you will have to buy another computer during dental school go ahead and get a macbook, it will easily last you all four years and you won't have to worry about losing or transferring docs off the pc.
