do i need a stethoscope

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At my school, we need to get one for the first year.

Why wait.. you will probably need it. It definitly helps and works better than your ears when listening to the lungs, heart and abdomen. although a good seal with the ear if equivalent IMO.

Depends on your school. Find out from them. At the majority you do because you'll start learning physical exam skills in Year 1.

At my school, we needed both the stethoscope and the blood pressure cuff for first year. They said we'll use both of them for our Intro to the Patient course, doctor shadowing and community projects like blood pressure screens.

Don't know much about Pitt though.

Make sure your school is not giving you one for free.

I got one for Christmas and didn't officially need it until February IIRC. I brought it with me while shadowing in the ICU and an outpatient clinic a few times and was scared somebody would tell me to listen to something when I didn't have a clue. I still don't have much of a clue, but I'm much more comfortable wearing it and listening to stuff I don't understand.

At my school they had a someone from the school bookstore come and we ordered as a group during first year. I didn't really know what I was doing then and ended up buying another stethoscope (a Littman) during 3rd year. I recommend waiting until you get some good advice from older students on the best equipment.

To the OP. At Pitt you'll need a stethoscope, otoopthalmoscope, tuning forks, and reflex hammer. During the year AMSA has a big sale and you can buy everthing at once for a decent price. Don't worry about getting anything ahead of time. Also, someone important may tell you that you need the expensive pan-optic scope that looks like a gun. It's cool and all, but you don't need it.
