Do I need Step 2 as an IMG when applying to residency match?

Whats the deal for IMGs?

At time of application/submission, do I need to give in Step 2 CK/CS marks? Or just Step 1?

I'm not sure if I should rush my Step 2 to get it in by the deadline date (Dec.1), or if I should just wait and do it in January or whenever...

I know that Step 2 is required for ECFMG certification, just not sure if its required for residency interviews...

Some programs require it, some do not. The rules are often different for FMGs than AMGs.

Some programs also require ECFMG certification BEFORE you apply, not just for starting residency.

Check with the programs you are planning on applying to and see if they require it.

To participate in the NRMP, graduates/students of international medical schools must have passed all exams required for certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®), and the results must be available by the rank order list deadline.

(that's from NRMP website)

I think the OP realizes that; she's wondering if she needs it to get interviews and should do it before the ROL deadline.

What WS said.

If you can get your Step2 CK done before August so that it's available for the Sept.1 ERAS opening, it will probably help in getting you some more interviews.

If you can't get it done in time to have it on your ERAS app by 9/1, then it doesn't matter. Programs that passed you by likely won't look at you again once your scores are in - interview slots were given out very quickly this year. So, have your Step2 done by the ROL deadline.

Last words of the quote from NRMP website I posted:

"the results must be available by the rank order list deadline"

This is the rule set by NRMP to be able to participate in the match.

When it comes to obtaining interviews, different programs have different requirements with regard to ECFMG certification. They might require it as follows:

1. Before application
2. Before obtaining an interview
3. Before ROL deadline
4. Before residency start date

This information can be found at most program websites under sections like "Application information" or "FAQ". If not listed at the program website - I have also seen it at the general GME website of a given institution (common for all specialties at a given hospital).

Good luck to you!

There you go again with answering questions that have not been asked, with quotes from the NRMP website.

As you can see from the title of this thread, and the lines from the OP which ive reposted in red... the main question is: Should one have their Step2 results available for residency applications, also known as ERAS, not NRMP or ECFMG.

So that junk you are posting about ECFMG certification is useless. So is the line that you boldfaced - about having the Step2 results by the ROL deadline (also known as "ECFMG verification") The OP already knows this, WS knows this, I know this.

Also, avoid talking back to people, especially to the moderator of the forum.

cod K - you seem intent on clarifying points which don't need to be clarified.

We do not deny that:

a) you were providing information from the NRMP website
b) that Bitsy needs to have her exams done and passed before the ROL deadline in order to be ECFMG certified.

The OP was asking whether or not she should take the exams earlier or would it suffice to take them and have passed by ROL deadline which is what my earlier post was trying to clarify for you. HJ was correct in that if she does not take it before the start of the application season, there is probably little to gain by taking it later (ie, after December which she is contemplating) except in cases of programs requiring it. Her question has nothing to do with ECMFG certification (I just mentioned it in passing in my above post) or the NRMP but rather can she get interviews without Step 2.

It is a mistake to assume that GME policies are department wide. Each department may set additional requirements beyond that of the GME department. Therefore, just because the GME department might not require ECFMG certification to interview, doesn't mean that department X doesn't. Thus, if this information is not listed on the department website and the GME page doesn't clearly state that this is an institutional requirement, you need to contact the specific department you will be applying to.

Bottom line: HJ is correct. Do what she says.
