I have recently graduated with my bachelors degree in Spanish with a minor in Biology. During my undergrad career, I was not sure where I saw myself in the future but was sure that I wanted to do something in the medical field. However, after working for quite some time now as a CNA, I have realized that I have a passion for this business and want to be a doctor.

How do medical schools view retaking classes? I have a few prerequisites that I have B's in and would like to retake to make A's to be more competitive. Since I have already graduated, I would not be grade replacing, I would just be taking the class over again.

Also, to save money I would like to retake these classes at a community college instead of a university. Is this something that is looked at differently by medical schools?

Any advice is appreciated!

retaking the classes at a CC will not help at all. Most people do not recommend retaking classes since they get averaged anyways. However, retaking them at a CC might even be looked down upon. Maybe consider post bac and show that you are capable of taking upper division science courses and doing well.

I don't think that retaking those classes would be a good idea. A few B's aren't enough of a reason to retake. If you got F's then it would be different.

Hello all, my GPA is 2.7 and my MCAT score is a 37. what are my chances in an MD or DO school in the states?....I previously had medical school education in Nigeria, the nigerian medical school system is obviously different from the american system. i was doing my clinical rotation while in med school in nigeria, I moved to the states and started college as a junior. i have worked alongside doctors and been involved n several surgeries and hospital consultations. do you think this experience would help in my application?

Don't hijack other people's threads. In the future, please post your own.

Chances would be close to zero, despite the wonderful MCAT. But there might be a DO program interested in you. Not mine though.

Simply taking the pre-reqs won't help for MD programs. You'd have to reinvent yourself through a SMP.

You're fine for DO programs right now, so re-takes would be gilding the lily.

Imccna, I would highly suggest you take your MCAT first before you make any decisions regarding post-bac v. smp, or even taking either. A 3.4 is not terrible. As of now your chances will mainly depend on how you perform on this exam.

Although I'm all for programs that draw attention away from an undergrad GPA, you'll get a much better idea of your chances at an MD program after you take the MCAT. Committing to so much money and time right away is too precipitous!

Study hard, and come back to us. We'll be better able to assist you then 🙂
