Hey all, so I've had a few MD interviews, two of which turned into waitlists. I'm still waiting on two others, but I may not hear back for up to another month and there's obviously no guarantee either of those will lead to an acceptance.

Currently, I have four DO interviews scheduled for late October through mid-November, all are out of state (I'm from the upper midwest). I've only attended one DO interview so far and was recently accepted to that program (AZCOM). Since I'm nearly broke at this point and falling behind in my classes (taking >15 credits and trying to maintain a good GPA this semester in case of more waitlists), I don't know if I'll be able to attend all of these interviews. While I'm interested in the programs I have interviews at, I wanted to get some feedback to see if anyone had any insight as to whether they are worth attending since I already am accepted at another program.

The schools are: AT Still - KCOM, AT Still - SOMA, KCU COM, and Touro - NV. Any thoughts are much appreciated, TIA!

Since you mentioned finances, how would you justify AZCOM's tuition with what it has to offer?
Do you have a car? You'll need a car with very good gas mileage if you attend that school, with rotation blocks being very far away from each other.
The school doesn't reimburse, either.

I recommend you attend the interviews if you can afford it and they don't significantly impact your grades.

Hello!! So I can give some insight into KCOM as I interviewed there last cycle (got put on the pending seat list, accepted 2020). KCOM I’m sure you know is pretty rural, it’s in the Northeastern part of the state and is far away (~2 hours) from any big city. Although people said it’s a good thing since it forces you to study a lot! But as far as facilities go, they’re well updated and impressive. Sim lab is nice, integrated ultrasound into the curriculum (btw personally I’m not a huge fan of SOMA’s 1+3 model but I digress), huge OMM lab and the anatomy lab is pretty standing IMO. It is a letter grade system. I think the big plus is the variety of rotation sites you get to pick from after 2nd year, a good amount of them are in big cities and metros. So if you don’t necessarily want to stay in Kirksville or a rural spot you have the chance not to.

I went to school in KC so I’m somewhat familiar with KCU. Can’t speak much other than what people talk about on here regarding KCU (Great match, tough curriculum, etc) but given that the city has two med schools and three hospitals, it should be easy to find research and other opportunities should that be what you want.

Personally I don’t know much about AZCOM other than the high tuition. Hopefully either you know enough about it to be able to make a comparison based off the information I gave, or that someone who’s familiar with the schools in question could help you out. All that being said, I would see if it’s possible to knock out the two Missouri interviews in the same week just to save costs. Kirksville is about a 2ish hour drive from KC. PM me if you have anymore questions about KCOM or KC!

That's a good point, I liked AZCOM overall but I am definitely apprehensive about the high tuition. Yeah, my car gets pretty good gas mileage, but that's an important thing to consider. Living in a larger city is also a bonus, since my SO intends to move with me and look for full-time employment.

Sounds like solid advice, thanks for your input!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I have heard that KCOM and KCU are reputable schools, so those are definitely high on my list. It's reassuring to hear some positive feedback regarding both of those. If I can't make all of them, your response has me leaning towards at least attending those two!

Fortunately, I have family in KC and both KCOM and KCU are both within driving distance for me, so those seem like they would be optimal for me to attend. I anticipate that flying out for SOMA and Touro - NV will be quite costly, especially since I have yet to book anything. I really appreciate your help!

Glad to help! And given your SO is looking full-time employment, I can also speak to the fact that KC has a very diverse economy and I have many classmates and friends from undergrad that were able to find decent entry-level positions in the area.
Many graduates of my undergrad that go on to DO schools end up at either KCU or KCOM and they all say how much they love it there and that it definitely prepared them for the match and ultimately their careers. Both match at university programs at a good rate but also good community programs as well. So whatever you’re looking to get into it shouldn’t be a problem.

You could try this way of thinking about it: consider each school one by one, and ask yourself if you'd rather attend this school than AZCOM if you got in? Important factors could be tuition (AZCOM is expensive), location, quality of clinical rotations. If the answer is yes, you'd be happier at School X than AZCOM, then go to the interview. If it's no (you'd prefer AZCOM over this school) then don't go. I found that when I was stuck on whether to attend interviews, viewing it systematically helped me think more clearly and decide. 🙂

I do know that Touro-NV is basically an old warehouse type building turned into a medical school, and it's in a weird location among a lot of car dealerships (doesn't look like a safe area), but I'm not sure how the curriculum and rotations are. ATSU-SOMA has nice facilities and is in a well populated city but you will only stay there for one year before relocating to one of 12 community health centers around the country for the next three years. I don't know much about KCU or ATSU-Kirksville.

Good luck, and congratulations on your acceptance!

That's a good way to put it, although it can be tough to know before attending the interview, LOL!

Okay, those are all important things to consider. My interview at ATSU - SOMA is more than a month out (last of the four), so I have some more time to decide on that one.

AZCOM is a fine school. Thus, if money is an issue, you can sit on that.

Of you remaining schools, if can scrimp the travel money up, I recommend:

KCOM, KCU > Touro - NV

Unless you like buffet at casinos more than barbecue!

Just pick by location. One isn’t necessarily magically better than the other.

Touro Nevada is least important.

The best imo out of those is KCU. Then AT Still Kirksville. KCU has great research opportunities and a great match list. Their boards are considerably over the national average.

I attended and was accepted to KCU, I feel that it is a good, established school with a good reputation. It is also in a city, which might not be important but is very important to me. If you had to pick any one interview, that's the one that I would go to.

KCU is a great school but I did not like the area and my wife would not have been happy there. I canceled my AZCOM II after getting into other schools but if you are serious about paying off loans and living frugal for a few years post residency I think it’s an acceptable backup to the MD waitlists.
