i finally found a DO that would let me shadow so i could get a letter...problem is he only let me for a day. i feel like a day of shadowing is not going to make for a very impressive letter...is this kinda standard?? should i find another DO??

That's basically what I did, shadow for a few hours one day and now I'm about to send out envelopes for the schools to which I'm applying. He's kind enough to send out the LOR for me, and it was great shadowing him as opposed to the other doctor (MD) that I shadowed for two non-consecutive months. From what I've heard though, many students are only able to shadow for a day or so. You're not so alone, just make the best of it and get the most out of it. Find another DO if you want to experience more, or feel that you could get a better impression of medicine by shadowing another doctor.
Best of luck!

I have shadowed and worked with 2 DO's for 5 years. However, I don't think most students have the opportunity to do this much, and most are likely right around what you are doing, so you should be fine.

No worries, I shadowed 2 different DO's for a day each. If you want to do more experience, find another DO.

sounds good! luckily i think i found another DO i'll be able to shadow...so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Give the Dr a resume so that they have more to go on for the letter than just the day they spent with you. You also want to be sure that the Dr knows that you have some understanding of osteopathic medicine, as this is something that many of the adcoms want to see.

that and realize that part of the process of the DO application for the LOR is just having one from a DO. A lot of people just have MD LORs so you're already a step ahead. Give him your personal statement too so he knows where you're coming from. Ask him for input about what schools you're interested in. And most importantly, apply to his alma matter. hehehe.
