I worked at a non-profit for about a year and a half before quitting to go back to school to do my post bac full time. When I quit, and it did not go over well with my boss. He let me write my own reference, and begrudgingly signed it, so it's obviously pretty good since I wrote it myself. But in view of all the bitterness, I would really rather just not have anything to do with my old employer. It wouldn't be a disaster if they contacted them or anything, but yeah..

So do med schools call old jobs from your CV?

Edit, also, I developed some very cynical view of non-profits in general after working there. I'm not sure if I should be honest about how horrible it was working there, or just kinda gloss it over.

Sometimes we do. The last few times had to do with letters not on letterhead or when we suspected that the wording was so similar in two letters that they were written by the same person. We've sometimes called when it was suspected that the letter writer was a parent or relative (and it was not so indicated in the body of the letter).

Hokay, thanks.I guess that wasn't clear, but I'm not using the ref from them I wrote anyway, cause it seems unethical/weird to submit a ref. I wrote myself, even with my boss's approval. I just don't really want them randomly contacting my old job, but from what you both said, that sounds pretty unlikely.

I heard back from one of my references that my interviewer at one of the schools that I was accepted at called to talk with him... Boy, that was confusing. Let me try that again. An interviewer at one of the schools called my employer reference and talked for about half an hour about me.My reference told me about it the next day.

Sometimes they do call. (also n=1)

The other two schools where I was accepted did not call (that I know about).

if you don't want them to call, why not just leave an email address? AMCAS only requires you leave an email or phone number, not both

My n=1 as well, but none of the schools I interviewed at or was accepted at called any of my old jobs. Can't imagine it'd be worth their time. There's just not enough overlap between most jobs (unless you were an RN or PA). I think the jobs give a clearer picture of your depth of experience in life more than a specific qualification for medicine (not that those two are too different...)
