Hey all!

Im currently 28 and I graduated 6 years ago with a chemistry pre-med degree. Since then I have worked in two different pharmaceutical labs and currently do data analysis for a health insurance company (for 2 years now). I graduated with a 2.8 GPA and I've been really tossing around the idea of going back to school whether that be med school or grad school and would like some feedback first before I put my nose to grindstone for the MCAT.

Currently I can get some pretty excellent recommendations from previous coworkers and I'm an excellent test taker and feel that I could get a 515+ on the MCAT if I really applied myself. My big concern is my GPA. I'm curious to hear if my work experience would have any sway in being accepted into a MD program or if I should just hang up the towel now and focus on a PhD route instead.

You'd probably have to take a couple semesters worth of upper level bio/chem electives to get into MDs but you could likely get into a DO with a decent MCAT.

Everybody thinks they're an excellent test taker. Just like everybody can think they can hit $300 in batting practice, but when they face a 95 mile an hour fastballer on the mound at Citi Field, it's a different question.

A high MCAT score does not remediate a low gpa. In fact it accentuates the difference between the two. Read my post on reinvention for pre-meds.

You need to fix that 2.8. You mention you're a good test taker - but all of the individual classes you took had tests, and you have a 2.8. And a 515 is 91%ile. You mention you can apply yourself - you'd likely need to do that in a post-bacc or SMP as well as with the MCAT.
