Do medical schools basically already "have an idea" who they are gonna send an II

...if schools see an applicant's primary application and see that they have decent/competitive stats and EC's...are your chances of receiving an II high as long as you write a average/decent secondary? In other words if you write a "4-5/10" secondary, you're still likely gonna get a II?

Perhaps it is done differently by DO schools, but if you get an interview, your chances of being accepted are from ~ 33 to 50%. So, your application is reviewed very closely prior to granting an interview.

Yes. My school gets about 5000+ apps for 100 seats. We interview ~500. So on paper that looks like a 10% rate, but you should double that, because half of those people applying have no business ever setting foot on a med school campus. The real question is: "define competitive". Someone with a 3.2 GPA and a 24 MCAT is probably competitive for MUCOM, but how many 3.6's/27s are also applying?????

Certain schools it felt like if you have the numbers you'll get a II. Others it felt like more of a crap shoot.

Quite a few of the schools send secondaries to everyone who meets a certain threshold automatically. In that case I would think that they would wait for the secondary to even look at the substance of the application.

Just wondering, even if a medical school has 100 seats, does your school accept more than 100 at first even though only 100 matriculate? Or do they only accept 100 at a time? Reason I ask is because there is always a lot of moving around and people withdrawing their acceptances for other schools.
