Actually, it depends. In general, they won't pay for computers, but if your school specifically requires that everyone in the class have a laptop, then it will be covered.

Our school was considering issuing laptops because they were going to shift to a more computer based curriculum. As long as they are on the required supply list or there you can get a letter from the dean saying it is required, it should be reimbursed. The same goes for surgical loupes.

good point. I agree if it were required they would cover it.

do you guys know if the Navy will pay for lights for the loupes? Or would I have to get an instructor to write a letter saying that I need it for a "composite course"

It doesn't matter if your school requires it or not. The AF will NOT pay for a computer. My school requires a laptop and I've had this conversation with the HPSP people several times. They just won't cover it. Believe me, I wish they would.

Sorry to hear they wouldn't cover your laptop, that sucks.

As for the loupe headlamp, the general rule is that it has to be required of everyone in the class. A letter from an instructor won't do, usually a letter from the dean is required.

I got one today my school's orientation. Apparently they just added it into the tuition so it looks like the AF "accidentally" picked up the bill. Works for me.

Call me bias, but I think all the branches should pay for it if it is required by your dental school. It sort of defeats the purpose of the full scholarship not to, but as a student I guess my opinion is biased.

As of 2004 the Army would not cover laptops, even ones required by schools. My school decided it would be bright to have Seniors (which I was) have to have a laptop for their senior year. Army told me NO...Director of clinical services wrote a letter stating that I would not be allowed into clinic, and therefore would not be able to graduate without the laptop...Army said NOPE!!! So I had to purchase a $2600 required laptop. Check your contract, it is generally spelled out in that (or the current Army regulation).

From what I've been told, upfront no. But later on they can reimburse you for the laptop if you manage to get them to recognize that in your case the laptop is required.
