edit: just watched it while eating pasta for lunch :barf:

Wish I would have been rick rolled instead. Time for some pasta!

That is SOOO ****ing awesome. Man, I wish I was in that OR while the operation was going on!

Hope the kid is OK obviously.

What were that 3 year old's parents feeding it? Did they just figure that worm larvae soup is cheaper than Cheerios?

I dissected an ascaris worm for a zoology class. We had to wear gloves because the eggs can survive being under preservatives for years and years. 😱 Fun fact from wikipedia: they can produce up to 200k eggs per day for a year and the eggs have a lipid layer which protects them from acidic or alkali environments.

i wonder if by having those things in me i can shed some fat a little faster.

In the 1920s-1930s Tapeworm pills and actual tapeworms were marketed as an easy way to lose weight.

ahhh i am so desperate lol, its laughable. i really wonder if it works. wut are the health hazards of this choice? i know its worms, not suppouse to be inside of u and all that but hm, last resort option is last resort lol.

That video wasn't nearly as gross as the title suggested. Still awesome though, especially when the surgeon pulls out that first huge clump.

Haha. I'm so with you on this one. I know it's wrong, and I know it could potentially kill you, but damn I could eat anything and still get skinny! (Of course, once you got rid of it, supposedly by taking dewormer, you would gain it back.) The gym isn't cutting it; I need tapeworm pills.

And yes, they are still marketed, but the hazards are known now. From what I understand nausea, sever stomach cramping, and diarrhea are common with these pills.

EDIT: In all seriousness, though...don't do it. It's very dangerous and has been known to cause death from malnutrition.

The worms in the video are Ascaris. They are a geohelminth. Ever wonder why hand washing is awesome? This is one of the reasons.

Cestodes do not make you loose weight. It is just a silly fad / urban legend. I think the last time it was "big" was the 1980's. Lets hope it stays away.

Bring on the noodles 👍

I'm not sure where I heard this, but the worms can get into your large intestine lay eggs, which get absorbed into the bloodstream then some into your heart then you get heartworms and die. maybe

That was, quite possibly, one of the worst life decisions that I ever made.

Its kind of sad when all that kid needed was some flagyl early on.

True story - Makes you appreciate everything we have going for us in developed countries

Sort of sick to think about how cheap most drugs are to deal with tropical diseases and how many people still have to deal with this stuff every day just because of where they live.

I hope seeing videos like this influence all you future doc's to give a week or two of your time every year helping out people in these areas who really need our assistance.

Heartworms have a mosquito vector so they don't lay eggs in your GI tract and yes, people can get them but it is super super rare.

The worms in the video actually migrate from your intestines ( where they hatch) to lungs, up your trachea, and down your esophagus before they mature and grow to that size in your intestines.

I was perfectly fine watching that video, but reading this description about made me lose my dinner. I can totally feel worms squirming down my throat now. Thank you for the mental image. 😉

reverse psychology 🙁 got me again.

Oh my God lol they are so much bigger than I expected them to be. I actually find it really satisfying to watch them get pulled out, like popping a big zit or something haha

may be, i am currently suffering americanism. a disease born by fast food, and because its cheap, its very resilient. i would luv researchers to come up with a treatment for this real fast. i really do lol.

Flagyl covers anaerobes. How is it useful for nematodes? Mebendazole perhaps?

this is a good example of why sometimes, the less you know, the happier you'll be...the world is full of creepy crawly things that are everywhere even if we can't see them with the naked eye... ::shivers:: i hope I don't become a hypochondriac as a med student, lol.
