DO or SMP?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oddly enough this list shows that only 2 people matched into neurology. Which is considered one of the easier residencies to match into. Yet why is there a small number of people there? Why? Because likely many didn't like neurology and simply did not apply to it. I mean I find it odd that people believe that everyone wants derma or rads or other things?

But less not forget the DO match. I think if we remember that there are DO only residencies which are open to just a small population of ~2,000 DO graduates.

I think you might be talking about neuro surgery. I think in that list neurology had 10 in 2009. Good list though. Hopefully trends stay that way. Good to see Anesthesiology and EM get a lot of DO's.

Yeah, I saw those. That data I posted does not include anything from this year.

It doesn't change your point, or make it any less valid ... but it's interesting. It makes me wonder if DO students are just starting to really match up well with their MD counterparts, if hot fields are finally starting to change, or if perceptions in the mind of MD PDs are changing???

Seems like there are a ton of DOs in ACGME gas.

I think it's a combination of the three (but probably less of the second one).

Maybe one day that BS that separates the 2 school types and their residencies will have evaporated.

Ok, please don't hate me for this post, but something just came to mind...

What if you deferred your acceptance for one year at the D.O. school (to avoid being blacklisted) and did the SMP while applying through AMCAS again (so no gap year). Interviewed as normal with the M.D. schools of your choice and if you happen to get in, then you say you changed your mind to the D.O. program (possibly getting a blacklist from this) and continue with the M.D.

Obviously, this is unethical, dishonest, and downright dirty, but for the sake of argument, could it be done?

First you need a good reason to defer. Second you may be legally bound to attend the deferred school.

Yeah it could be done but you would be a huge douche for doing that. It would be a shame if someone called kcom and anonymously informed them one of their deferrals was actually deferring to go to a MD program bc mommy and daddy want him to 🙄

If you can find a good reason to defer and aren't legally bound, then go for it. Only problem with this plan is that I hear some schools want to know how you did after your SMP to accept you, and by then you'd already be done with your one year deferral.

The match lists do show a couple good matches this year. Few people are saying it is outright impossible for DOs to match competitive programs but it is definitely more difficult. Here is some data:http://www.nrmp.org/data/resultsanddata2009.pdf

Look at table 11 (page 29 of PDF). This is the LAST 5 YEARS DOs matched to:
0- Rad Onc
3 - Derm
1- ENT
1- plastics
16 Ortho
2- neuro surg

Those total numbers for all DOs for 5 years looks about the same as you will find at single a state MD school for a single year. The people who are most vocal about how there is no stigma, are those who have not gone through the process. I find that funny.

Look, it is possible to match competitive programs as a DO, it is just much harder.

At least when I applied, it asked about MATRICULATION not if you were accepted. He has not matriculated anywhere. Perhaps the application has changed.

That's not up to date, my friend matched radiology this match at a great ACGME program and this individual is coming from a DO school, it's not impossible. It's just less common, keep in mind less DO take the USMLE & there are a lot less DO than MD.
