Do orthodontists really make more money than general dentists?

The reason I am asking is because I think orthodontists have limited opportunities of jobs while general dentists have endless opportunities of jobs.
Like... orthodontists will usually have one office and work fewer hours as there are not much demand, while general dentists can have 2,3, multiple offices because of endless demand. So, if general dentist wanted to, he could work as much as he wants to (because there's great demand) and make more money than orthodontists (who, while pay/hour is higher, can only work very limitedly as there's limited job opportunities).

The AVERAGE net compensation of all specialists is over that of a GPD. Though that is the case, and yes, ortho and oral surgery top that rank I think, you are correct about something. I do know of a dentist here in Richmond who graduated in the 70s, started up a practice as a GPD, was so successful he ended up recruiting more general dentists (and specialists) to his practice eventually having about 6-7 locations (largest in VA). This guy is worth MILLIONS! Last year or the year before he donated 2.5 million to VCU dental school. This of course is NOT the norm, but it can happen.

In summary, orthodontists make more than GPDs if they work similar hours or maybe .60 of the hours a GDP works but the way it is set up, it's sort of how much work you want to do dictates how much money you will make. I guess business sense is a MUST. In addition... SO MANY PEOPLE GET ORTHODONTIC WORK... I don't think you have to worry much about a patient base except for competing orthodontists.

Many GDPs do some of their own pros, many do their own endo but I don't know of THAT many that place their own braces on patients (unless it is invisalign)

Hi Mike

If you do a search, you will find lots of information on the average salaries of the various specialties.

Regardless of the fact that the avg Ortho salary is higher than the avg GP, it is ultimately up to the business acumen of the dentist that decides their salary. I know numerous general dentists whose avg salary greatly exceeds the average salary of orthodontists.

All orthodontists make more than DMDs, but less than a DDS. For the obvious reasons.

I just know that as a "poor, starving, lowly gp";):D that I make sure when I goto lunch with the ortho that handles a majority of the cases from my practice, that HE buys lunch that day:laugh::hardy::rolleyes:;)
