For MD programs, if I am correct, students apply through sfmatch for their ophtho program which will begin in PGY2, and through NRMP for their PGY1 once the results from sfmatch are known.
For DO programs, am I correct that students simply apply for the internship year, and then once that year has begun apply for a PGY2 optho spot? So for an MD residency, you know where you will be going after your internship, but for DO residencies it is up in the air whether you will get into one at all?
