schools that screen applicants pre-secondary such as UMiami, UCLA, and WakeForest, do they screen applicants based on numbers only? Or do they look at PS, ECs, etc?

pretty much numbers. Afterwards, they look at your numbers again in addition to the other stuffs. Then, they compare your stuffs to other applicants' stuffs

I believe it's just numbers. However, some schools want to see both your gpa and MCAT, while some will screen just based on gpa. For instance, I passed the screen at EVMS and Miami with no MCAT score, while I was put on pre-secondary hold for Vandy, Loyola, UIC and Wake because they need to see both to screen.

illinois screen??>

so not cool to screen on gpa alone. screws people like me

first two years: 2.51
second two years: 3.88
cumulative: 3.2
science: 3.85
mcat: 35

well, you have to pay for screwing around at some point, right?

Many of the schools that screen have pretty low requirements, as I've heard, except for the ones where a secondary is almost the same as an interview.

ah well i was in high school. i'm getting judged for what i did in high school while the rest of the crowd gets away with what they did in high school. who woulda thought fulfilling high school classes at the local university would come back to screw me?

well, in that case, many schools will overlook it. Don't worry too much worry about it.

I know that for Miami, they screen for a 3.6 OOS and a 3.2 instate. And you need a 24 or above on the MCAT (30 is recommended for OOS). This is all per their web site.

Well I have to report it all to AMCAS and it will be calculated into my GPA that gets reported to the schools. It won't be until later that they see all the crappy stuff was before I graduated high school... assuming I even get that far.

Don't worry about getting GPA screened out, I have a 3.1 overall GPA and I haven't been rejected presecondary from anywhere yet, including some screeners.

I'm pretty sure some schools screen a little more carefully than that. UCSD for example gave secondaries to around 1900 applicants out of 5500 who applied. I have a hard time believing all those other people were screened on grades/MCAT only.

You havent seen their applicant pool

Some schools do look at more than numbers. Just browsing MDApps under UCSF reveals some people with lower scores still getting secondaries over those with higher scores.

It is numbers. They dont have time to go through and read that many applications in this short amount of time to decide who to give secondaries to. They use a formula and cutoffs for GPA and MCAT. According to a UCLA adcom, only race can account for someone with a lower formula number being sent a secondary despite others with a higher formula.

From UCSD's FAQ:

What does the Admissions Committee consider in the initial review of my application?

The Admissions Committee looks at everything in your application file:

* GPAs
* MCAT scores
* State of legal residency
* Applicant's personal statement (aka AMCAS "Personal Comments")
* The extent and depth of extracurricular activities
* Work experience
* Honors and awards
* Cultural and socio-economic background

schools that screen applicants pre-secondary , do they screen applicants based on numbers only? Or do they look at PS, ECs, etc?

One of our state schools screens based on geographic location. One is more likely to get a secondary if the primary residence is in the southern part of the state. Perhaps other state schools are similiar.
