I'm just an MS1, so I still have no idea what specialty I want to go into yet. Nor do I know very much about what residencies look for in an applicant.
But I do know that I'd like to do some research this upcoming summer and figured I should start looking soon.
Do residencies care about what kind of research you do? Some people are telling me to just pick something I'm interested in. Others are saying I should pick something that's related to the more competitive fields (just in case I end up pursuing a competitive specialty).

Just like the other thousand time this question has been repeated...

in field research> any research> no research.

Sorry for the redundancy. What I'm trying to get at is whether I should choose a research topic in a more competitive field when I have no idea what specialty I want to go into yet...

Nah find something that interests you. I had no idea what I wanted to do but I wanted to get hands on experience. I chose a PI that would allow me to learn about and do supervised micro-surgery with residents (on rats). It was really cool and I learned a lot but I doubt I will try to go into anything surgery related

Half the benefit of doing research is getting to know people who can be your advocates when the time comes for letters of recommendations, phone calls and the small stuff thats important in the small competitive fields. Look through the competitive specialties and see which one catches your interest the most. Don't worry so much about doing research for internal medicine and such, don't need it.
