Being a future DO student, the admissions director at the school I will be attending told us that in 2015 all AOA programs are transitioning into ACGME programs. Basically, MDs and DOs will have the same match now.

Will this make the DO residency application process easier? What kind of implications does everyone think this will have on the state of DOs as separate from MDs? It seems like the two disciplines are merging together more and more as the years go by. Will competitive residencies be more attainable now or will there still be a potential stigma with allopathic-favorite programs so to say?

Haven't seen anything about this on here and was wondering what anyone else has heard or thinks particularly those that have been through the DO residency process.

Having the same match can be both good and bad.

The good: No longer having to worry about being withdrawn from the ACGME should you match AOA.

The bad: Stigma against DOs is still present. This will change but how long it will take is up in the air. Also AOA residencies can become flooded with MD applicants, making certain specialties even more competitive than they are now.

Which school said this? When I interviewed at RVU they would not stop talking about this. It seriously bugged me since the merger had already failed.

Marian. They said new details are basically being hashed out and that it is planned to happen starting after the 2015 match.

Well in that case, I think Marian is fairly credible.

Why do you say that?

Because as far as we know, it was already shot down (last year?).. It doesn't seem likely that they're going to already have everything figured out in a couple years when it's already failed.

Maybe someone that has a link is kind enough to post the details for OP.

What would happen if there was a merger:

No more DO spots for competitive residencies which means you need to compete with MD students for spots in programs where biased/ignorant PDs would throw your app into the trash for not being an MD.

1. If they are indeed reconsidering, posting old links would not work because I doubt AOA/ACGME will post anything official until things are 95% finalized.

2. I asked friends and current students confirmed that there are talks once again--stay optimistic everyone.

That's not an old link. Plus, OP stated he was told that these changes would happen in 2015. Obviously, this isn't the case as implementation is delayed until 2016 at least. It's premature for schools to be telling applicants when these changes will take effect.

Perhaps it isn't delayed until 2016 anymore.

The link you posted was for an article of Oct. 21, 2013. OP isn't talking about the ACGME Common Pathway...he's talking about the renewed talks of residency merger which have been spoken about by school faculty as of the last few days.

Ah, yes. Still, nothing is set in stone yet. They've been talking about this since 2011, I believe. It could happen as early as 2015. From the original post, it sounded as if the admissions director was pretty certain when in actuality nothing has happened other than perhaps resumed talks.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Just curious: how would this affect U.S. born IMG's from the Caribbean, Ireland, Australia etc. that are applying for residencies in the U.S.?

There's a thread on this in the Osteo forum. Looks like they're trying again! Yay!

No that's just people speculating. Too much misinformation floating around about this.

They're going to be oh so happy that they can get spots in AOA. That is if this merger actually ever happens.

actually if the merger happens at some point, along with upcoming residency crunch, the IMGs are going to have a really big problem on their hands. MDs and DOs will get the spots first and many IMGs will not match. so if you want to practice in the US, your best bet is just stay in the US and get your MD or DO here. IMG is not the viable route to take like it used to be a few years back
