Does anyone know how difficult it is to match to a regular MD residency program out of a DO school?

The NMRP offers general statistics, broken down by year/gender/status and specialty of choice.

http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/tables/table2_04.pdf

The short answer:

- in 2004, 92.9% of MD graduates matched into an alleopathic residency.
- 70.4% of DO graduates matched into an alleopathic residency.
- (for US citizens in foreign medical schools: 55% matched)

EDIT: Should be clear... these percentages are for those who *ranked* alleopathic schools. Meaning in the case of DO schools, only those that didn't match in the AOA match first.

As you can see, its harder, but hardly impossible.

Many of us who ranked and matched into allopathic programs this year didn't bother with the AOA match. Please don't infer that we didn't match in the AOA match first. Thank you.

Thanks for the info.

Note on PDF: Unmatched PGY-1 applicants includes applicants who matched to PGY-2 positions, but not to PGY-1 Positions.

So some DO students that did a AOA internship could of marched in PGY2. Or matched outside the match.

EVen though it sais 70%, it can be higher.

By the way, its striking that the match% for osteopaths hasn't changed despite a huge surge in number of candidates over the past 7 years (undoubtedly due to growth in new programs/class sizes). The number of osteopaths going through NMRP has almost doubled (890 to 1559) in that time frame, but the number of candidates matching has kept pace... giving us a match % that's stayed consistently around 70%.

That should comfort those who're concerned more DO graduates = lower quality of DO graduates = worse residencies for all DOs.
