MiesVanDerMom,
Why are you asking this question? Are you on FBI's top 10 most wanted list?
I don't think they care much about it till you are not involved in something big. I don't think DUI matters a lot as there are lot of people who do stupid things when they are young and learn from their mistakes and admission committee knows about this. But this is my wild guess.

yes, of course
you are applying to become a physician, who posseses a narcotic license.
If you cannot be licensed because of a felony in the past, the schools will not want to accept you. Hence the reason for the criminal check. It would be a terrible waste of time, money and effort to go thru school and not be able to get a license to practice medicine.

Yes they ask if you've ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor on the application. I had a DWI conviction when I was seventeen. I've had 2 DO interviews and 2 acceptances, and it wasn't brought up in either interview. They understand that people make mistakes.
I had to go through a background check and fingerprinting just to be a pharmacy tech. It stands to reason that at some point between applying to med school and acquiring a license the same would be true. Better to screen you out before all the trouble and expense than after.MiesVanDerMom said:Do DO schools do criminal background checks like MD schools? I wonder about this. Don't they have to get a waiver from you to do a criminal background check? I work with mentally disabled adults, and before getting hired I had to sign a waiver for them to do a background check on me. I don't recall signing anything like that for my med school applications.
I'm just wondering about the process. ie- If you didn't report your crime, then how would they find out? (not suggesting anything here).

I've read about some schools making you sign a waiver after you've been accepted to allow them to do a criminal background check. So if you did not disclose it on your app, you would be screwed at one of these schools. I think it is becoming even more common now that all these stories have come out about violent criminals being admitted to med school because they didn't disclose their convictions on their applications.

Hm. Well, so far I haven't been asked to sign such a waiver. These kind of precedings just interest me, because I wonder how the schools safeguard themselves and future patients of the would-be doctor. If they just go by the honor system, well, I'm afraid that there are many 'criminals' that would not respect that.
This is not to say that someone can't make a stupid mistake and learn from it, but if the person has been convicted of selling hard drugs, or murder...
