This is my one dying question and it seems like the reviews are pretty mixed.

What I've always understood is that the exam with the highest composite score is taken as your "score." However, I've also heard that schools will actually report their matriculated students' highest scores to the AAMC.

If there is already a post about this, can someone link me? :/

depends from school to school... I'll find a thread... 😴 sooner or later

I don't quite understand your question. Med schools see all of your MCATs you ever took. Most go with the highest scored particular MCAT. A small minority of schools will give you the benefit of the highest you've ever done in each section.
I don't understand what you are talkng about in terms of schools reporting highest scores "to the AAMC", as the AAMC is the one who generates those scores. At any rate schools see ALL the scores you ever took.

I have takes the mcats 3 times and just got my score back for the third one. I went up a point overall but increased a few points in PS but dropped a few in VR. So if you take the best scores from each section of my 3 mcats I have a higher score than compared to a score from one date (e.g. August 2006).

I was wondering which schools use the best sections scores giving me the benefit? Where can I find this information about the schools? thanks for the help.

Please do!!! That would be super helpful! I retook the test in August and even though I improved in all three sections I'm wondering how my old scores would affect my chances. Thank you soo much!

the link i posted above is for a thread that has a list of the school policies for repeat mcat takers. ie, does the school average, take the highest result, etc.......

Thanks Arsenic I did check out the link but that's for people who are applying during this cycle and it deals mostly with whether the school will consider your application before they receive your August retake score. Maybe you meant to put up another link?

I'm actually not applying until next year so I was wondering in general do most schools take your most recent score? I kind of want to get info on specific schools and their policies on retakes. Is this info available in the MSAR or do I need to call up each school and ask?

Thank you UMP!!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I think the list allayed my fears a bit now I know most schools either take your highest or most recent score. If anyone has any updates on the list please post! Thanks!

yeah those two dominate... and anything else is really an exception

I am mostly interesated in schools that take the highest score in every section... Is there such a list made? So far Tufts is the only one?

Heres the way I look at it:

Med schools see all of your scores. Even if schools dont count your highest score in each section when reviewing/considering your scores, they will still see that the last time you took it you did higher in one section- and understand that you are at least capable of achieving that score.
If someone got a 11P 10V 11B, and then took it again and got a 9P 11V 11B, they may only count that second total, but it would be in their heads that you are capable of getting an 11P.

Id say that everything else being equal, someone with say a 28 total (9P, 10V, 9B) but that had gotten an 11P the time before would get an interview before someone with just a 9P 10V 9B as their highest scores.

I agree. It doesn't really matter what med schools say; the point is they see all your scores.

that link was extremely helpful. helped me to save about 100 bucks in applications, lol 🙂
