Do schools know about previous acceptances?

I have searched and searched this website for a good thread about this subject, but it seems know one knows the real answer. Plenty of folks like to say 'prior acceptances are red flags,' or that the schools will 'know' about previous acceptances. That may be true, but on what authority is such information had?

I have previously posted this elsewhere, but post it here again:

According to the University of Washington's admissions office: “Medical schools do not have a record of the medical schools applicants have applied to in the past. If this information was provided by the applicant to the Admissions Committee, it could be noted in their file.

“If a school extended an applicant an acceptance, but the applicant chose not to matriculate and reapplies to the same school at a later date, the school will have that on record. Otherwise, another medical school will not have that information on hand. If an applicant was accepted, matriculated, and chose to withdraw into the quarter, then
he/she will need to include that information on the AMCAS application.”

That was from Stella Yee at UW admissions.

She seems to think that schools don't even know where you applied to. Of course, she could be confused or just not know, but I would appreciate it if someone had some verifiable information that could clear up this quesion.

I emailed AMCAS and asked them what information they provide to schools about re-applicants, but they have yet to get back to me.

Any ideas?

Ive read many threads about this and no one here will be able to tell the right answer, or if they do, its drowning in a sea of speculation. I believe that the info you got from UW would be logical, simply because knowing whether or not someone was accepted and then using that information to decide whether or not to accept them now is basically unwarranted discrimination. I only say that because reapplying after an acceptance doesnt violate any school policy as long as you withdraw before reapplying, and it certainly doesnt break any law. I would think schools would be hesitant to use such information in deciding whether or not your current application has any merit, but thats just me speculating.

First off, your mdapplicants profile doesn't match your picture. (You're certainly female in the picture, but the mdapplicants profile is for a male - what's the deal with that?)

Secondly, please be sure to post whatever AMCAS tells you in response to your question; it will settle a lot regarding this issue!

Thanks!

I am pretty sure that the schools don't know where else you have applied or been offered enrollment. Many of the forms/papers I got from the U of Wa while I was confirming my offer of acceptance asked that I keep ALL schools up to date on if I was accepting a position elsewhere. Also, the AMCAS website says that it doesn't inform the medical schools of which schools you are applying to. So as long as you don't volunteer the information during an interview, I think that the school wouldn't know.
