DO schools make you set up your own clinical rotations?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most schools seem to offer flexibility especially for fourth year, so that isn't so unusual. But did you have to set all of your rotations up yourself for BOTH third & fourth year at DMU??

DMU is also trying to move all of their 3rd year cores into Iowa, Ohio, and/or Michigan. Though they are still struggling for peds and OB, like most other programs are, it sounds like they have both health care systems on board for this coming event.

hopefully you never have to find out.....while its fine for your elective/audition rotations.....without Docs in hospitals who are associated w/ your school you can't guarantee that their is gonna be someone there to properly teach you....

That isn't true exactly. Most people that accept students without pay and are not affiliated with a medical school WANT and CHOOSE to teach you and really like having students. Especially DOs that have had to do this in the past. The act of treating you like a scut-puppy is less intense as well, and they are also more interested in providing 'teaching' experiences, instead of making you look stupid or run errands.

...YES, at the end this is the "less structured" rotations that we pay high tuition for. YES it is a rip off considering the school doesn't do much durring 3rd and 4th (more so). But we are paying for the right to do medicine not for the excellent training. Unlike allopath, DO path is really the "make due situation" and accreditation is a crap shoot and weak (I will say that to refrain from using stronger language).

Good grief, doc.....experiencing a nadir in the first year, are we?

bill is going through MSI shock with a school whose curriculum is ever-evolving (as are many schools' curriculae).

Sweety I posted this 06/28/2006 before we even started school.

Read the whole post. It was not as bad as what was highlighted.

YES, ALL IN ALL.. I do think it is a waste of MONEY. Since the schools don't do much for students durring 3rd and more so 4th. If they had a local teaching hospital.. which UNECOM SHOULD HAVE! Then the students should have the option of leaving and doing electives elsewhere.

Funny thing. I asked if I can do 4th year in CANADA... you know that third world country (north of you)... at interview I was told SURE... you set it up you do it. Last month I went and asked... they said year 4 weeks only since its an international rotation. HMMMMM BUGGERS. I explained that all the hospitals that I would be attending would be teaching hospital at LCME Medical schools... It was explained to me that I am getting an american - osteopathic degree. AGAIN BUGGERS. I said what if its with a DO. Same answer 4 weeks.

So that is all back to Histo.

Shyrem.. don't blame me being a jerk on stress.. it is just me being a jerk. Hehehe

Oh, doc, you're not a jerk. So how 'bout we team up with some other "interesting" classmate and all swoop down on the same rotation site for years 3 and 4???

To the previous posters about KCUMB-COM-

As someone who has just recieved confirmation about their rotation site I would like to clear some stuff up. KCUMB-COM offers rotations in most regions (southeast/northeast/midwest etc) this was a real selling point for me to be able to PICK THE PLACE I wanted to go. With that said the school schedules ALL of your core rotations-this is not up to you. Just like all med schools you have flexibility in MS4 to schedule electives. To the people who said that you couldn't stay in KC- no one has ever not been able to stay in KC if they chose to in the years that I have been here. But as I said before a big selling point is having the freedom to choose where you would like to go for your clinical years and many people to opt to move closer to home/significant other etc.

Taus,

My house to LECOM = 1 hr 49 min drive

My house to Ohio University College of OM = 3 hrs 50 min drive

Bill, Bill, Bill...stop scaring the lil kiddies!
I think we need to play racquetball again.
I want to do a rotation during 4th year in Canada.
Lets do one together that way I can kick your butt everyday on rounds :meanie:

Seriously people, setting up 4th year rotations is a wicked sweet deal. You get to try things out in places of your specific interests, not get stuck in some stuffy place that is burnt out of the same pool of students year in and year out.
