Hi everyone. I am engaged and planning to actually get married during the time between first and second year, granted I get in. I have noticed a lot of the DO schools seem to make you schlep all over the US for your rotations. This would be fine if I didn’t have a spouse with a full time job. Moving to a new place every month isn’t going to be doable for her. Are there any DO schools where your rotations can can all be in the sameish city or at least in the same state or is a long distance marriage inevitable at some point?

Last year, I interviewed at CUSOM, ATSU-KCOM, KCU-COM, and ARCOM, and they all had core rotation sites in the same-ish area/city as their school. But I don't know what happens when it comes to electives and whether you wanna do away rotations or not depending on the type of specialty/residency you're going to pursue (I'm guessing you'll have to secure those on your own at a Hospital of your choice).

KCU Joplin and KC will both have completely centralized rotations within a few years. There are a few stragglers for rotations right now but they are actively working to create opportunities nearby. I'm biased towards KCU Joplin, but it has a great setup prepared for when we start rotations.

PCOM has 2 tracks - one where you're somewhat on your own and you set you own stuff up, but the other track keeps you in Philly. I believe you have a choice or it's 50/50, but I'm not 100%

Rowan keeps you in NJ. You might have to move to north jersey, but the furthest site is 2 hours away, and you do all but like 1 rotation there. None the less, half the class stays at the main site hospital.

On the KCU website it looks like they have a decent number of clerkships in Missouri but also a pretty non negligible number in places like Colorado, Florida and Wisconsin. Are they changing this in the future or are these sites just options for those who want them? Would it be possible to do both clinical years in this area, or at least one full year in year three?

Rowan likely not an option (OOS) but PCOM is possible. Thanks for the info, I couldn’t find anything on their website!

I believe for some schools you choose the top 3 sites you would prefer to do your core rotations at, and then a computer program match the students based on their choices. That's how the schools I'm going to attend this Fall (and I believe also KCOM, can't say about KCU though) does it, and then there is a day where students can also trade their matched sites (in case for example the computer program matched you with a friend's preferable site who also ended up with a site you would prefer better).

Touro Nevada’s clinicals are all in Vegas/Henderson.

As of now you can do your rotations there but the goal is in the next few years to keep everyone in KC in KC and everyone in Joplin in Joplin. KCU will have 100 more spots in KC by next year.

Michigan State places you at one base hospital where you are for all of your required rotations. Up to you what you wanna do with your electives, obviously.

Not a michigan resident unfortunately but I wish : /

Most schools keep you in one spot. This is a good question to ask on interview day. Even LECOM told me they don’t expect those w families to go off their site for rotations.

OUHCOM has the CORE in Ohio. I know they have sites in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Athens, Akron, and Toledo Areas. You can do what is called a prematch. GME Partners and Programs As a very non traditional student that is married with a husband that works in ohio, OUHCOM was my goal school as it would let me stay with my family. the CORE ensures that I will at least be a reasonable driving distance from my family at all times if I get placed outside of my home city 3rd and 4th year.

So you most likely won't be "moving every month" for rotations. There is however, a high likelihood of you having to move between 2nd/3rd year to your rotation site.

Really? This is what I'm thinking about whether or not I should go here.

I’d ask in the school specific thread since I don’t go to LECOM, but I asked at my interview and they said they go out of their way to make sure you don’t have to move around if you have a family.

Most DO schools just have you move after second year, but at my school and many others there’s plenty of spots to stay for those who want to for all 4 years. (I’m excited to get as far away from the school as possible though lol).

What you’re describing sounds more like the offshore schools. Most DO schools place you at a core rotation site. Of course you could venture out for electives/selective/auditions in 4th year. At my school, NSU, we are assigned to core rotation sites based on our rank order list and a lottery random order of student placement. ~80-85% of our core sites are in the south Florida tri-county area, some requiring zero move at all after 2nd year. There are a couple sites in 3 other big cities in Florida, and then 2 out of state sites. The out of state sites are not in the main rotation lottery and are elected into if desired.
