I have a GPA of 3.3 at Mesa community college. I plan to go to ASU for a degree in micro. Would they look at both of your gpa or will they calculate them both into one? I would like to know because I want to go to an MD school, preferably UCLA or U of A. I speak spanish and would like to help others who speak spanish as well. I would not mind working in an urban area. It would help so many people.

That GPA is low. You should really raise it at your CC and also make sure your GPA is really high whichever 4 year you end up going.

Spanish is good.

Yes, the calculated GPA combines all of your grades. Looks like you have a long ways to go. GL!

👍

They will calculate them together. Do better at the university...adcoms like to see an upward trend.

I have Cs in microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology. I know that at my school if I take a class again it would take over the old one and increase my GPA. This is only at the community colleges in AZ. I wonder if it will work? I dont want to take these classes again but I need the higher gpa? Should I retake these classes again? I also thought about using a BSN in nursing as a premed degree but, I also thought about microbiology.

You can retake courses, but for MD schools, the two grades are averaged (rather than having the old one replaced). You can take additional science courses to try to show them that you know your stuff and to get your numbers up.

Micro is a more traditional pre-med major than nursing is. Nursing and medicine and different things, you should explore their differences, but becoming a nurse to become a physician is a round-about way of doing that. If you like micro, go with that and continue to explore health professions. There are a few nurse to MD threads here on SDN.

You should join a pre-med group at ASU, and talk to their pre-med advisers.

Speaking Spanish is great thing for schools such as U of A and U of Southern California.

I would be worried about your ability to do well at a 4-year. You are getting sub-par grades at a community college, which is far easier than any 4-year.

Before people accuse of CC-bashing, or being elitest let me just say that I also attend a CC.

The OP's grades don't seem to be sub-par in general... lower than average for medical school, yes.

That low(er) GPA can be changed a lot in two years. People may become better students.

You're good to go, just keep the grades up and above that when you transfer.

Don't listen to the cynical premeds.

3.3 GPA is low for medicine. If you get straight A's during the next half of college (to complete a Bachelor's) your GPA would be 3.65, which is just fine. All your undergraduate GPA are calculated and averaged out by the AMCAS.

Since you profess that you would like to help the urban population, I suggest you start doing extracurricular activities toward that goal to show your sincerity. Having URM status (being hispanic/black/native American) would also help.
