Hey guys,
I need ur advice. I have been accepted to a DO school, but really wanted to be an MD. Can someone tell me the differences between DO and MD education? Like the differences in classes, curriculum, amount of training, etc. I will really appreciate your help. Also, is it very hard to study for both USMLE and COMLEX the same time?

DOs have to go to school twice as long. Their tests are harder. And they get paid less after graduation. All DOs make less than MDs. And they have separate bathrooms at the hospitals. Also, no free parking or lunches for the DOs at said hospitals. DOs also have to bow their heads in the presence of an MD. It's true...

*srs answer*

The only difference (curriculum wise) is that DO's must have 300-something extra hours of OMM (I think that amount is right, not sure).

In addition to what M.D. learn D.O's learn manipulative motion called OMM which is suitable for treatment in a family medicine / general practitioner setting. Many D.O's find themself going into primary care where they can apply their osteopathic skills but it is still possible (although there is no doubt that D.O's have a bit more of a uphill battle than a M.D. in this regard) to get into the more competitive residencies,

You've been accepted to a DO school and you still don't know the answer to this question?

Wow did you seriously miss the huge MD vs DO sticky at the top of the pre-osteopathic forum?

Facestab indeed.

This actually made me "LOL", you got ACCEPTED to a DO school and you don't even know what the profession is!

But seriously:

1. Do a search, there are way too many threads on this topic
2. Shadow DO's and MD's and see for yourself (this should be #1 actually)

Wait, don't they usually ask you why you would go D.O. rather than M.D. during the interview?

In the off chance that u are not a troll, you are an idiot.

The main difference is OMM classes and higher tuition. Otherwise it's essentially the same.

Im gonna go ahead and say **** OFF.

A) You clearly didnt do a search. Hell you didnt even have to do a search. You could have scanned the first pre-osteopathic page to see 2 different threads detailed on this:idea:

B) Do you really expect people to answer your questions properly when you are pretty much saying "well i dont want to be in your guys position, since its inferior to MD". You are dissing DOs and pre-DOs right away by writing "I really wanted to be a MD".

Please just give up your acceptance to many of the well deserving people who would kill to have an acceptance to a DO school

I have a more imp question...what's a facestab and how does it differ from a facepalm?

What do MD curriculums fill this time with?

I've always wondered that..

OMM really doesn't take much time at all. It's 3-4 hours per week in lab and then studying for about an hour before a test. No other studying is needed. It's one of those "easy classes."

I'm thinking facestab is like facepalm + anger. I'm not sure whether it is the OP who's face is getting stabbed or the poster of the facestab himself. There is some ambiguity there but I think the main point (disappointment + anger) is the most important aspect.

Careful with those generalizations there, bud. OMM varies school to school. Some schools have easy breezy exams, other schools have harder exams. I have a friend at a DO school that has essay form OMM written exams. You can't just BS it either.

True that I can only speak of my own school here but I would wager that the vast majority of DO schools don't put OMM class at the same level of difficulty as Biochemistry, Anatomy, etc... It's usually about a 20-30 hour course per quarter with very limited studying compared to the big courses, hence DO students are able to learn the same material that their MD counterparts learn, along with some manipulation, without needing to use amphetamines.

That also has to do with the amount of time DO students spend in class. No, OMM is nowhere near as hard as the other classes, but from what I've observed, a lot of DO students are in school from 8-5 (give or take) most days of the week while some MD students can go a whole week sometimes without any required afternoon activites and only a few morning lectures.

I'm jealous, HD.

You have 3 monkeys now (avatar + sig), :wtf:. How am I supposed to compete with that! I've surrendered to my lame sig now. I'll jazz it up sooner or later.

I think that's a pretty accurate description. I believe all faces in this thread were metaphorically stabbed after reading (or unfortunately writing) the original post. I can only hope he is a troll, but the lack of continued trolling makes me scared he's serious..

What's funny is I didn't even notice that. Wtf indeed.

I was just thinking of retiring my dancing monkeys though 🙁. They danced their adorable lil feet off.

Lol. Love this guy.

OMG what about the "holistic approach".

please......"holistic approach".....
it's what you MDs do plus OMM....at least that how I will practice it like everyone else I know....meaning: I will enjoy all the rights you MDs have plus I can offer OMM to my patients.

I think what we need is a list ranking schools in terms of easiest to hardest OMM classes.

Let me clear this up for you OP, because I had the same question about 3 years ago. First, DO's care about their patients before entering med school while MD's don't and always go into radiology. Second, DO's learn how to give head massages in order to compete for chicks with the rich radiology MD's. Third, DO's can party during underegrad and study less for the mcat and still become a doctor, although radiology wont be an option. Fourth, DO's take a class called "degree explanation" in order to teach coping skills to deal with people who don't know what a DO does (most hot chicks are starting to understand though due to head massage goodness). Lastly, and this has been a hot topic for the past couple of years, DO's are not allowed to eat during their shift. It's a bit antiquated, I know, but tradition is hard to break.

Hope this clears things up! Good luck!

At PCOM OMM lab is 1.5 hours a week.

Lecture (which nobody generally attends) is between 1 and 2 hours a week.

So my real OMM time commitment is 1.5 hours a week.

If anyone is considering attending PCOM feel free to PM me to ask about OMM. Its not professional for me to post my opinions of PCOMs OMM situation on a public forum. But yeah the time commitment is pretty minor. Not sure whether that is a good or bad thing.

5 star thread OP....would fap again

A DO degree isn't a doctorate, it's just the graduate level of massage therapy school 🙄 I heard Kaplan University will be offering an accelerated 18 month program starting this fall.

New question: When should we start lobbying for M.D./D.O. marriage rights?
